A word from Saint John Ale House
The Saint John Ale House offers progressive pub food in a casual, relaxed dining room, in our pub and on our waterfront patio during the summer. We take pride in knowing where our food comes from and use locally grown and seasonal produce, meats and fish from New Brunswick farmers in many of our menu items and daily specials.

We offer the largest selection of beer in Saint John, including several local craft beers such as Moosehead Cask Ale made exclusively for the SJAH. We have an extensive wine list and also serve creative cocktails hand-made by our mixologist.

Join us for a few drinks in the pub, or dine in our restaurant. If you're interested in an all around fun night out in Saint John - we look forward to hosting you!

Sorry we do not accept reservations in the pub or on the patio.

Diner Reviews
  • "At an Ale House, I expect lots of pub choices to go with the beer. Their menu did not offer a good selection in this regard. Prices were high and menu would be more of what I'd expect in a bistro. I splurged and went for the scallop risotto. It wasn't bad enough to send back, but I would never get it again. I got a delicious risotto at Longhorn Steakhouse in Bangor, and that's a chain! Ale House one was salty and otherwise bland. The winter squash was a nice decoration but didn't add anything to the dish. Scallops were cooked nicely. That's all I can say about that."

  • "Three of the four were happy with their food. The kettle chips - need to ask if they want a little, medium or lot of salsa/sauce, no where near enough for one, plenty for the other and they both had to ask for extra sour cream! The beet salad was enjoyed very much - interesting item to see on a menu. The Steak and Fries were perfect. I would really recommend the Saint John Ale house for small groups. I attended recently with a large group and it did not go so well."

  • "The atmosphere was lovely and held great promise. It was great to see Canadian wines being promoted however more selection would have been nice. The wines available were very good. The food was beautiful but was not 'done justice' by the waitress. Unfortunately she was far from the calibre of The Ale House and really degraded our experience. She was absent for most of the night except when we would send someone to get get her. She generally just did not seem to have a clue. The food deserved better treatment as did we! I would still recommend the Ale House for th efood and the wine. I am hopeful we just had bad luck with one sub-standard server."

  • "What a great time and meal and evening at the Saint John Ale House!! The atmosphere and fun people that go there is so uplifting even when it is snowy and cold outside. Love the menu - always a little surprise on it as things change with the season."

  • "One of my favourite places to eat and I love the fact that you buy local as much as possible. I also understand that the chef keeps his own garden. I love how you keep the menu short and sweet although a few at my table missed some of you pub selections from past menus. I loved my whole experience there. The only thing that took me off guard was that your prises were a bit higher than I remember. That's fine with me because I think your food is great but a couple in our party would not have that kind of money to spend on dinner. I think they would have preferred to have a couple of more lower prised meal options. That way, we could come again as a group and everybody could afford it and feel comfortable."

  • "I've been coming to this restaurant for a long time, and I don't know where to begin in terms of describing how great it is. I was there this week for a function at night and mentioned that a guest had special dietary issues and the owner and chef were there and came back with a special meal prepared for them. The food is of the finest quality you can imagine, the Chef is appearing on top chef Canada, the owner is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Ther service is fantastic. If you're looking for top quality food, and amazing friendliness and servive, drop in to see the folks at the Saint John Ale House, you won't regret it!"

  • "First time at the SJAH was an enjoyable experience. Great atmosphere, a view of the board walk and harbour (which is probably more lovely in season), and delicious homemade hamburger made with local meat. The fries were very tasty with light seasoning. Good portion sizes and reasonable prices. I look forward to coming again."

  • "A little bit loud. we sat where people are coming in. would ask for a different table next time. found something that looked like a fruit fly in my glass of wine. didn't seem to be a problem with the waitress, another glass brought back. should have a vegetarian menu. friend is a vegan, not much to choose from. one of the things we ordered was kettle chips. should be asked what kind of topping to get on them. we had to send it back because there was meat on it."

  • "The Ale House is a great dine-in experience. I love eating there on dates, the ambiance is great. The dimmed lights dive enough light for you to see your food and enjoy yourself while still have that romantic touch that I really enjoy. The noise level has always been nice and quiet and allows you to center in on yourself. The waitresses and hostesses are very nice and understanding, patient and well informed. The food is amazing. I go there solely for their Fish and Chips because the haddock/cod is the best I've had and the piece received is well worth the size, along with a proper serving size for the side. The restaurant is a great place to be and go with loved ones and friends. Highly recommended."

  • "We were visiting Saint Johns for my husbands work and was looking for a nice restaurant to eat in. I went on trip advisor and looked up restaurant and they were their and highly recommended. It's a nice place, great atmosphere and fantastic food. The bacon wrapped scallops were awesome! I has the turkey lobster which was great and very filling and my husband had steak that was cooked to perfection, melted in your mouth. We are from Halifax and the next time in Saint Johns we will be returning to the SJAH."

  • "Well, absolutely another lovely meal at Saint John Ale House. Tried a new dish, fried clams and pork sausage - local products. The combination was so delicious. Enjoyed the ambience and friendly folks around. Just a fun night and perfect for the Mayor's tree lighting event which we enjoyed from our window view. Perfect all round!!"

  • "They have a really lengthy beer menu and we enjoyed that everything on the menu was sourced locally, but we thought that it was all a bit overpriced because in the end it's only a pub with pub-ish food. It's a nice place and the food was good but the bill shocked us."
