Went to Sage so my UBC student could eat with his grandparents. THere are two kinds of food, small plates and large plates. And when they say small, it's extremely small! THe server did say you'd need three to make a meal. I guess it's a good way to try different tasty things. Once you've assembled enough food, it's quite pricey either way. THe "large" bowl of soup was very tasty, the zucchini dish less interesting. The basil panna cotta was delicious. It's a light, sunny room, white linens, nice ambience. Patio can't accomodate parties of more than 4 though.

I am an UBC employee and frequent the restaurants often for lunch. I found Sage to be a lot more upscale and refreshing than most pub like venues in UBC. I really enjoyed the meal and the notable wine list. The server was especially friendly and informative (sorry I don't remember your name) I would definitely dine there again. Thanks Sue

  • Small Plates Way too small

Service is extremely slow. This is a Faculty Club. We bring important guests of the university to this restaurant and it is embarrassing the guests have to stand around for a long time until we can be seated. There were only one/two waiters in the restaurant. First impression, poor. Food. Very tasty. Wait time. Long. The restaurant just gotta speed things up. Lunch - they have a small plate menu and a large plate menu. While the waiter was very nice to give us warning that the small plates are indeed very small plates and recommended the guests to order 3 small plates to make one full meal, the portion is just plain stingy. You cannot charge someone $7 for a salad dish served on a plate so small that is usually just for sauces.

I ate here with two friends and we were all very impressed with the food. All three of the fish/seafood mains we ordered were cooked perfectly (seasonal local halibut, king salmon, and stir-fried prawns), the sides were fragrant (asparagus leak risotto was outstanding) and the banana cream pie was one of the best we've had. Even the smoked paprika compound butter was a nice touch. Not a thing to complain about re the presentation or preparation of the food. All three of us will be going back.

The food was delicious, the fish was just the right tenderness, the veggies that went with it were not overdone and had that hint of a crack when you bit in. The chocolate cake was heaven, fit for the term "death by chocolate"!

Great location still. The only casual-fine dining on campus. Regretfully service deteriorated in the past decade. Food is still fresh. The terrace view is the only factor worth the d-tour from the city.

  • Sage Bistro at UBC

Have been to Sage many times over the years - one of the few central places for "special lunches" at UBC. This time, though, I was shocked by the noise level. The stark white space with hardwood floors simply amplify all the noise being made by the diners. Not a relaxing ambience. I don't remember it being like this previously - perhaps there used to be carpets? We found it nearly impossible to hear each other. The food and the view were great and the service was good - but I don't think I would choose it again just because conversation is nearly impossible. They need to install some sort of sound buffers - wall hangings, carpets, something...

The ultra white tables and chairs are as inviting as a hospital operating theatre. The new menu is confusing, particularly the small portions. The server was efficient but overly aggressive as some people in our group had language challenges and slowed down her progress through our large party. I have eaten at Sage many times and I feel this is the last time as there are other places at UBC to eat.

Dined at Sage twice in two weeks while on a short teaching gig at UBC. The halibut was divine - the best I've ever had. Ate the salmon on the second date and it was excellent. The vegetables were cooked perfectly. Everything was light and fresh, but flavourful. Service was attentive but not overbearing, and definitely not pretentious. I would highly recommend this beautiful little place.

I've been here twice for lunch with another colleague in the last couple of weeks. The new small and large plates concept works really well. Each time, I've ordered the Chef's combination of three small plates and each time the food has been excellent and the combination of plates well conceived. The plating is beautiful. Each time, we had a different server and both provided impeccable service. The renovated room is a little sparse for my taste but may suit others' more modern pared down flair and the view is lovely.

My friend and I went here for lunch during a walking tour of the UBC campus. There is a distant view of the mountains and ocean. The menu has an interesting variety of choices of small and large plates which require some explanation if you are not familiar with the terminology. Some small plates are sufficient for a full meal while others are quite small and need to be combined with other choices. The servers can help in advising on the best choices. The food was excellent. I plan on returning to sample some other plates.

The post-modern UBC faculty club. The recent makeover has delivered a dining gem in a decent restaurant-challenged city. The location makes it a tough choice for many but if more knew about the views and the great food it would have line-ups. Sad it isn't open evenings but maybe one day. Wonderful friendly staff and an imaginative kitchen.

Sage is an excellent venue for lunch. I understand it is open for dinner, although I have not been there for dinner. It's a great locale for lunch, and for groups. The menu selection, has only delicious foods. The wine and spirits list is impressive. I often go for lunch, and as I work at UBC, have not had wine or spirits.
