A word from Safari Room Fresh Grill and Bar
It doesn't take an explorer to seek out the aptly named Safari Room amid the exotic zebra-print furniture and carved elephant busts of the Davenport Tower lobby. The frequent hum of activity, the sparkle of laughter and conversation — not to mention the incredibly affordable lunch and dinner specials — seem to draw scores of guests almost instinctively.

Since opening in 2007, this truly stylish restaurant has had the quiet distinction of becoming a kind of pet project to owner Walt Worthy. It is a place where he has been able to introduce all the classic Southern fare from his youth in Georgia: dishes like homestyle grits, savory smoked barbecue, indulgent fried okra, and flatbreads fired in a special oven then sprinkled with tantalizing toppings. Yet the menu is broad enough to satisfy all cravings, no matter whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Diner Reviews
  • "In my online reservation I mentioned that both my guests had recent birthdays and to do something for them if possible. Their desserts came out with a chocolate Happy Birthday written on them. It was a very nice touch. Food is well prepared and presented."

  • "Our original table was near the bar and much too 'energetic' for my elderly parents; we requested and they moved us away to a quiet section without fuss. Our party of 7 enjoyed the fixed price menu (salad, entrée, dessert for $18). Salads were big and fresh. Nice selection of entrées, everyone like theirs except for my picky brother couldn't find a side he liked. Desserts were the "shot glass" type. Most were happy with those, the German Chocolate Cake one was too dense and hard to spoon of the glass. Overall very good, portion sizes generous, food tasty. Safari Room is very spacious with lots of marble, high ceilings; this "cool" atmosphere is nice during these summer months."

  • "The place was packed when we arrived. My party of six was looking forward to dinner and drinks. The catch was we needed to get in and out quickly as we hadtickets to Wicked. The staff at the Safari Room stepped right up. We had a fabulous dinner and made the production with 10 minutes to spare!!!! k"

  • "I want to go on record that the food was fine and our server was EXCELLENT. SOOO if you are NOT in a hurry, the Safari is a great place to eat. But when our group of 8 arrived for our 7:30 reservation we were told that not only would we have to wait for our table, but that we would have to wait for a seat in the waiting area and they suggested we "go for a walk." When the eight of us crowded around a cafe table in the lobby of the hotel, we noticed many other groups being served drinks while they waited and no one approached us for the half hour we sat there. Really put a damper on our celebration."

  • "NO valet parking Very, very noisy Salad was on a big dinner plate and the salmon was in a big bowl very hard to eat I had the same salmon at the Davenport Palm room two days before -what a difference I prabaly won't go to the safari room again on the weekends."

  • "We came early to take advantage of Happy Hour--the drink menu is very unusual and has some awesome libations. The food was great and the creme brûlée was the best I've ever had. The acoustics are a little funny--so it is somewhat loud, but it is a nice restaurant."

  • "We were early, but were seated right away. It was definitely a bit loud since there were a few groups, but we could hear one another using normal voices. For appetizers we had the flatbread and pita w/ hummus. They were good. For a meal, I ordered the ribs and my wife got the slow cooked chicken. We both liked the meat a lot. With the ribs I got the baked beans and cole slaw. Both were good. My wife's chicken came with stuffing that was hard and inedible. We also had some of the mini desserts and they were really good. The service was good, but a bit slow. The environment and decorations were very nice as well. Overall, we liked it and for the money thought it was a good place for dinner. Slightly upscale, but fun."

  • "Fun atmosphere, but not great for romantic get a way. Food serving sizes were minimal for the price. Service was great, and terrific decor."

  • "Had the restaurant week prix fixe menu for $28. Food was good but seemed a bit amateurish for such a well known hotel. I had higher expectations for a Davenport restaurant."

  • "We went for the 3-course $17.95 dinner special. Excellent value, good selection, fresh ingresients cooked and served beautifully. It was so good we will return to try the regular menu, and other items on the $17.95"

  • "I have had breakfast at the safari room twice and both times the food was delicious. They allowed me to order half of their crab omelet which I really appreciate because a whole omelet at any restaurant is usually too much. I recommend their crab omelet highly because of its balance of flavors. I have not had a better omelet anywhere else. The accompanying hash browns and toast do not disappoint."

  • "My friends and I, six of us total, enjoyed a delicious lunch and exchanged gifts at the Safari Room on Friday the 20th of December. Our server was friendly and attentive. The food was wonderful, eliciting oohs and awws and we took the first bites of our lunch. The small dessert cups were brilliant for us as there were six choices of goodies and six of us! We passed each one around and took a taste and decided on our favorites, perfect for us perpetual "dieters!" (wink wink) As we gathered up our Christmas loot and left the Safari Room, we noticed that many other ladies were also meeting their "besties" there for lunch and gift exchanges! They all had the same great idea!"

  • "The food was excellent and the service was excellent, but it the layout of the bar and restaurant make it way too LOUD! Could not hear the person sitting next to me. It was very frustrating and ruined a special night out."

  • "Six members of our club were able to attend our holiday lunch at the Safari Room. We enjoyed the African safari motif as well as the Christmas decorations. The food was served hot, and was delicious. Our waitress, Melinda, was attentive and friendly but not intrusive. All in all, a great place for a small group to lunch together."

  • "Although the online menu listed different entres than what was actually offered, I found it to be quite a lovely surprise. I had a garden salad, herb roasted salmon and creme brulee:) I have a hard time finding a restaurant that can make a devine creme brulee and this was by far the best I've tasted in a great while. My honey had the same as me except he chose the pot pie for his entree. This was also a nive dish, but not one I would personally go to a restaurant to eat, especially with the other delectible choices on the menu. Service was 5 star!"

  • "Spectacular lunch spot over Holidays and special occasions. Excellent food and service. I requested special dish on the spot, not on menu but server obliged and cook prepared with GUSTO! I loved the entire experience and my out of town guests were delighted and impressed with ambiance service and deliciously sumptuous dishes. Two thumbs up!!"

  • "Prior to making the 4:45 PM Thanks giving reservation for 6, I checked past reviews on line and they were all average to very good. Unfortunately, our turkey dinner was by far the worst turkey dinner any of us had ever had. The turkey was very dry, gravy was literally colored water with sage, dressing was dry, tasteless bread cubes, green beans were runny and tasteless, mashed potatoes were dry and flavorless, the pumpkin pie was not good and the overall plate presentation was poor. We should have eaten at my mother-in-laws rest home or Denny's!"

  • "A very nicely decorated restaurant in a relatively new downtown hotel that has been constructed (successfully) to look like a classic. Went for lunch before a theater matinee. The restaurant was perfectly located, street parking was available (or valet), food was quite good (chargrilled burger and crab omelet), waitress was delightfully friendly and appropriately attentive. We will be back."

  • "We had a great time during our visit. The food is always good and your drinks are pricey but very good so I guess they are worth it. Our server, Andrew, was the best. He was polite, gave great service and even helped make our girls night out even better. He interacted with us and made us feel very much welcome. So many times we have gone to other places for our ladies night out and though the food may be good it's the service that brings us back. We are already looking forward to the nice evening at the Safari Room."

  • "Checked into the Davenport after a six-hour drive. Arrived mid-afternoon very hungry, looking for a convenient late lunch/early dinner. Found the Safari Bar on Open Table (love this app, by the way). Of course, we were seated immediately and received excellent personal service from Melinda. We asked for a wine suggestion and were served a vintage perfectly suited to our request. The meal was wonderful -- well prepared and presented, especially in the middle of the afternoon."

  • "We had a great server but she only had so much to work with while our meal took about 30 minutes to prepare. I do realize that thing do go wrong and realize that this was one of them. I still enjoyed the meal and will be back again."

  • "We went to the Safari Room for a friends birthday because of the amazing happy hour. Our friend is a scotch connoisseur and collector, and this seemed to be the best option to celebrate his refined tastes for an affordable price (everything in the bar is 1/2 price!). The ambience and menu is amazing, and our server was okay-- although she seemed to be new, so that was probably the issue. All in all an excellent experience, and a great time! Highly recommended."

  • "The food and service is consistently top notch. Everything is as you would expect from a fancy restaurant with the exception of the pricing. The safari room keeps their prices at a very tasteful level. I don't recall ever leaving there with a bill above $60 for two. Your food is served very quickly as well, making this a great place to have lunch."

  • "Good menu selection priced very well. Three course menu is excellent value. Service is fast and friendly. Safari Room has become a favorite family gathering place for special occasions. We will definitely be back and likely will recommend to friends."

  • "We were celebrating our son's graduation from college. It was a Sunday evening, nice atmosphere, wonderful service, and the food was very good. Other reviews had mentioned a problem with the noise level but that was not an issue at all - probably due being a Sunday. We utilized the 3 course special menu (all choices were $17.95) for our group so we were able to know just what we would be spending. We sat at a table near the windows. Very special time. Would highly recommend it."

  • "I ordered the crêpes that day and when they arrived they were ice cold! not very appetizing at all. Our service was not very good as well. We had to ask for refills on coffee many times, you should never have to ask for a refill. They were not very busy at all. Overall I was disappointed in the food and service."

  • "My mom loves the Davenport Hotel and we all had never been to the Safari Room. The experience was excellent! The food was superb, and the service was top notch. We especially enjoyed all the wonderful decor to fit the name of the restaurant. I highly recommend the Safari Room for Mother's Day brunch, or any other special occasion!"

  • "We had lunch for four at noon and were seated right away. The ambiance was wonderful and the service was good. They were originally out of their signature coffee cake but were able to procure some addition cakes from the Palm Court across the street. While my mom and sister enjoyed splitting a Crab Louis, my partner found his crab omelet dry and over cooked. I'm not sure we will return there anytime soon."

  • "We went to dinner to celebrate a graduation with four in our dinner party and had made reservations. The hostesses seemed overwhelmed with the patrons, struggled a bit with the computer system, eventually found the reservation and we were seated in a quiet area- which was in sharp contrast to the rest of the eating areas which were very loud. The waiter was pleasant, but again seemed stressed and overly busy. A request for a varied option on an appetizer was not followed through on. The wine order took longer than expected. Food was very good. Overall the experience was acceptable, but not commensurate with the price and reputation."
