A word from Sabroso Restaurant
Sabroso (sah-bróh-so) adjective: Delightful, pleasurable, entertaining, delicious, lovely … To produce this delicious fusion we have used two main ingredients: great Chefs from Calgary, to whom we are permanently indebted, and our Latin roots; out of the richness of cuisines from over 15 Latin countries is where we have derived our inspiration. Cocina Nuevo Latino is loyal to its origins: it keeps the spices, the mixes, and flavors but fuses it with local ingredients, with global techniques to appeal to local palates, to help it make sense in this local context. We have carefully selected the best of Latin America’s wines to pair with our menu; beers from Mexico to Argentina to delight you and your guests; spirits and cocktails together with delicious non-alcoholic beverages to complement our food.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Quite expensive for what you got. Both in terms of food and wine. Great concept but poorly executed. Short and poor quality wine list. Food dishes OK but rather heavy. Lacking flair and imagination and overall value. "

  • "Our second visit and this time the food was even better. Saturday night and restaurant was not packed. These people deserve to be successful in a difficult location. Support and visit them!"

  • "Wonderful food, a cheerful ambiance, and warm and accommodating service - Sabroso again exceeds expectations. "

  • "I went to Sabroso for the first time this past Saturday night, after hearing some positive feedback through the grapevine. This type of latin-flare food is my personal favorite. The restaurant itself is lovely, I would definitely recommend it for a date night or a group gathering. Unfortunately it was too cold out for us to eat outside, but it looks like it will be a terrific patio spot for the summer. Our waitress was a total sweetheart - friendly, attentive but not irritating, informative, and gracious. The live spanish guitar really highlighted an evening of delicious food and drinks. The black bean soup is TO DIE FOR!! Great cocktails!"

  • "We enjoyed an amazing meal here recently, as part of our celebration. Mid-week, we found it not busy. The calamari was so tasty and cooked to perfection that we wanted more. The jicama salad was the perfect intermission between the appetizer and our main course. I had the lamb chops (still an amazing value), while my partner had the chimichura beef steak. We both thoroughly enjoyed our choices. Service was impeccable. Though it has been months since our last visit, the staff remembered us. I will not let that much time pass before going again!"

  • "Food is very good but the portions are small, I ordered with my husband the Parrillada for 2 which turned out to be for 1 person. Only 1 chorizo, 2 chicken legs, not more than 5 tiny slices of thin steak and 3 or 4 shrimps ... For the price we paid is not worth to visit."

  • "First time and it won't be the last! Great food and excellent service. The tastes were a change from the everyday choices and much appreciated."

  • "The authentic cuisine and charm of the ambiance is wonderfully enhanced when they have live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. It was our second time there, we love it! For foodies, heads-up that the chef is heavy on the salt and pepper, we noticed that both times. Despite that, the food is still excellent."

  • "We had a great time here! The food was excellent and reasonably priced. Great cocktails too. The wine list was small....an opportunity for improvement. Great for a night out with friends!"

  • "Ambience feels like a typical casual South American restaurant. Solid service. The flavours of everything we tried were great. Portions are relatively small, especially parilla para dos - the portion was more appropriate for one. Although perhaps cliche, would like to see empanadas on the menu. Mmmm empanadas."

  • "Friendly staff; cozy atmosphere, great food, prompt service, reasonable prices, wonderful live music. Menu is variety of Latin American dishes, small plates or full meal. Try it you'll love it."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our first dinner at Sabroso. The staff are very attentive and the meal was very good. Unfortunately we were too early to enjoy the live entertainment; but, I know we'll be back to check out more of their menu. We'll plan a later meal next time. I would definitely recommend Sabroso to friends and family."

  • "The Sabroso restaurant is a great find. The calamari is excellent as was the Hanger steak and tuna entrees. The service was excellent, we had a young from Argentina who helped us with our choices and she did a fantastic job! The portions were smaller than compared with other places, but we walked away feeling comfortable, which is a good sign."

  • "The paella I ordered was a little disappointing because it lacked the crunchy layer on the bottom. The caparini was not anything like the ones we had in Brazil. The service was great however."

  • "This is a fun restaurant. It was our first visit and yet the staff made us feel very welcome and at home. Unlike some other reviewers, we had no problems with service. Our server (the owner?) was very friendly and attentive. The food was generally good, with a few misses. My grilled tuna was unseasoned. When I cut it up and mixed it with the very delicious quinoa and vegetables, it was good because it was perfectly cooked, but in my books not seasoning meat before you cook it is a no-no! My husband's hangar steak in chimichurri sauce was interesting - it was a delicious dish, but it wasn't a chimichurri sauce as we've had before. I would go back to try other dishes."

  • "Sabroso is a surprising treat. The quality of the food is exceptional and is so much finer than the interior design of the restaurant suggests. The tuna is the best in Calgary. Flank steak...amazing."

  • "The food was good, but for the price paid, I could have eaten much more and as good at the Keg."

  • "Service was terrible... Took them about an hour to deliver first course after tables that were seated after is were being served main Ordered a soup that was more like a bowl of cream with essence of butternut squash. Lunch there is fine but special occasion for me was a bust."

  • "This is the third or fourth time I've been to the restaurant on the corner. The server was lovely and the restaurant is lovely inside. The menu has changed recently, and not for the better. The "papas" potatoes were crispy and nicely presented, but tasted strongly of commercial seasoning salt. We were told that there was no jicama for one of the dishes, and that the civiche would only have prawns and not scallops like on the menu. The cocoa nib bread pudding was, frankly, eggy and disappointing. My first visits were great, and I probably will try it again with hopes that it will be back to its former standards next time!"

  • "My wife and I truly enjoyed our evening out on Valentine's Day. The service right from the moment we walked in until the time we had finished our meal and were making our way out was first class. Our four course meal was timed extremely well. We did not feel rushed on anyway. We will return and we will recommend the restaurant to our friends."

  • "We were first time patrons of this restaurant celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary. The restaurant was highly recommended by JoHn Gilghrist, Calgary Food critic. We were not disappointed at all. Food, ambience, and service were outstanding. Once hearing about our anniversary the moved us to a better table location and spent alot of time ensuring we were getting the best service possible. We are extremely impressed with Sabroso and will become regulars there."

  • "Sabroso offered excellent food and outstanding service. The owner and the staff made us feel at home, the kitchen accommodated all dietary restrictions on a dime, coming up with creative dishes not on the menu to make sure that we received what we needed. Despite the last minute dish creations, the food was still superbly good, delicately flavoured, and esthetically presented. We ordered soup, salad, an appetizer, two different main dishes, dessert and drinks. All the dishes were to die for, the portions were just right and we left the restaurant full and satisfied, looking forward to returning soon. As for the music, it was peppy and pleasant at a decibel that was just right."

  • "Food was really tasty, my only complain is that for the price the portions are small."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "Everything was notable, service, presentation, taste, and the live music. The downside was that the portions for the appetizers were very small given the $15 price. Even the main course portions were very small. We had to had to snack on some food when we got home."

  • "Had a great lunch with family on Friday, food was piping hot, steak chimchuri were cooked with great sides, chicken arepa was also good ,jicama and orange salad was refreshing."

  • "Went out for a date night with my husband (which we don't do often). While the service and ambience was great. I did not enjoy the food very much, first of all the portion sizes were ridiculously small. Maybe it's because we don't go out often but I found it laughable that for $15 ceviche it was the size of my palm. Same goes for the parilla para dos, which let me tell you 4 "prawns" is not a lot for two people to share. On that plate the steak, potatoes and shrimp were good. But the sausage and chicken were quite dry."

  • "The food experience was ok and the service is excellent. Dessert was the best. I was expecting a stronger influence of latín cuisine but I in the end I can understand that they may prefer to sacrify this and rather give a touch of originality to the dishes."

  • "We went to Sabroso on a return visit as our first experience was great. This time it did not meet the mark in the service area. The waiter took our wine order and didn't offer refills or take our food order for nearly an hour. He explained that there was a problem with their electronic ordering system. Someone finally took our orders old school, and we thought the problem solved, but kitchen was still slow. Appetizers took another hour, and when 3 of our entrees finally arrived the they were out of what I had ordered. Fod was great, but sitting for 3 hours on a hard chair beside a drafty window was not. I will not be back on a weekend as they appeared understaffed and not prepared for a crowd. Pleasant waiter though."

  • "Had drinks and appetizers with friends at bar, then sat for dinner. Good selection of Latin specialty drinks. Limited, but good, selection of Latin wines. Nice environment, easy on it was good for kids, became more adult as time wore on and live background music started. Good, attentive service. Best thing was the food. Reasonable size portions, excellent quality and taste. Prices were also reasonable for Calgary. Will definitely go back."

  • "Good Latin American restaurant, aren't many in Calgary. Not a large menu but good choices. Food was excellent, well seasoned. Staff was friendly and helpful. Live music later in the evening, nice touch. The music added to the ambience."

  • "The potatoes bravas were very good. The chicken anticuchos with the wonderful mole sauce was a hit.The pulled pork arepa was our least favorite dish. The fig and cocoa nib bread pudding was incredible !!!"

  • "My husband and I took some old friends for dinner a few nights before Christmas. There were a couple of parties in there, so Sabroso was more boisterous than usual, but the food was fantastic as always, and the service was great. We had a couple of very nice chats with one of the owners. This is a really wonderful restaurant, whether for a party or an intimate dinner. In August we went there for dinner, and our children enjoyed it very much too."

  • "The flavours were wonderful. I went with two other friends and we sat at a corner table. We were greeted at the door by a young hostess who pointed at a coat rack and said "coats go there"... We were seated at a corner table, and then we waited... a while... a server eventually came over to take our drink order but she forgot it and had to come back. She recommended some tapas for us and we said we were sharing everything. She WROTE down our order, and then brought out the wrong food. We also had to ask her to bring out plates for us. She was really having an off night. Myy favourite was the steak arepas. I would go back, if nothing else to try some of the other dishes. But I'm not rushing back."

  • "We had dinner at this restaurant on a Saturday night. The food was very well prepared, just the correct quantity, presentation was excellent, and the flavours were great! We had read the detailed review by John Gilchrist, and totally agree with his assessment! I would definitely recommend this establishment. It is a bit more "pricey" than an average restaurant; but it isn't an average restaurant!"

  • "Visited Sabrosa Saturday December 7,2013. There were five of us, ( including one minor, 13 year old) . We let our server pick out all of the food and were pleased with all the slections made. Tapas were excellent and meal for two people was fantastic! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. In terms of prices, I would place it very reasonable, more upscale that an Earls type restaurant. Full dinner with drinks and wine for five people was about 220.00.Only downside was that the bill came with gratuity automatically. If we had not noticed our server would have received a very nice tip, as we were not informed of this policy. A great evening. Live entertainment was wonderful. Will definatley return."

  • "We got a reservation on a Friday night on short notice - so called 2 friends & made it a table for 4. Very welcoming by staff, and service was great by a very knowledgeable server, who explained the origins of many of the dishes Owners stopped by a couple times to answer questions and check on us. Share 3 appies - all delicious and equally delectable mains of tuna, snapper, steak and pork arepes. Freshness (fish is from Boyd's next door - always good) and interesting spices.Great churros and fig bread pudding for dessert. Wine list is limited but our Malbec worked with all dishes. Bill surprised us a bit - wine was higher than I thought we chose & guess 2 more glasses - brought it up. Latin music kept the mood vibrant. Will be back."
