J. Paul's - Georgetown
American | Georgetown
51 reviews

J. Paul’s is Washington’s quintessential turn of the century American Dining Saloon. The J. Paul’s bar in Georgetown is itself a 100 year old mahogany shotgun bar, built by the Brunswick Balke Coolander Company and was previously housed in a grand saloon in the Chicago stockyards. Many will swear over their scotch that Al Capone himself bellied up to that very bar. Antique brass elevator doors from New York’s Waldorf Astoria frame the back dining room.

A few short blocks from the Potomac River, in the heart of fashionable Georgetown, the original J. Paul’s has become an institution. Every day, politicians, journalists, artists, business people and Washington personalities share tables with students, tourists and ex-Pats in the nation’s capital. Don't miss out on a visit to this DC institution!

Trademark Drink + Eat
American | Alexandria
19 reviews

Trademark is the neighborhood bar for a remarkable neighborhood. With a nod to our close friends at the U.S. Patent and Trade Office, we take our inspiration from the innovators whose once daring ideas set the standard.

Then knowing exactly what the standard is, Trademark enjoys nothing better than tweaking it. Someone else had the brilliant idea to combine pork with beans, macaroni with cheese and gin with vermouth. We simply came up with a way to make you think you’re tasting them for the first time.

The mixologists behind our bar program understand that some drinks are made to forget a hard day, others to foster inspiration, and still others to toast old friends and instant acquaintances. We also noticed that good things happen when the atmosphere is properly stimulating. You’ll find the mood at Trademark as comfortable as it is inventive.

British | Downtown Washington DC
1 review

Brixton is modern British pub in the heart of DC. We have 3 separate floors which can all be blocked off for private events. The first floor is the main restaurant area, with TVs and high top tables. The second floor is styled as an old British Lodge, complete with delicious cocktails and working fireplaces. Our rooftop is partially covered, heated and open year-round. We've got a view of the Washington Monument which is perfect each year on the Fourth of July for viewing the fireworks. Our cuisine is modern British, with Indian and Carribbean influences, just like the neighborhood in London that's our namesake. While we are not open for lunch, we are able to open for large groups interested in having a daytime event! Each floor has it's own feel, and we're happy to cater any event specifically to each group.

Hawk n' Dove
Contemporary American | Capitol Hill
Reviews coming soon

Hawk was the venerable meeting place where both sides of our brain got together, politically. Since 1969 the arguments ebbed & flowed, and eventually everyone just moved on to drinking and laughing together. The quintessential American "dive bar". The next chapter was a ground up 15 month renovation under new owners in 2013. 45 years later, we honor the tradition of the original ethos and, even late at night, "dive" to that legacy. Yet we think that the Hawk is ready to move on from "69... make our own mark...honor the past...make it ours. The menu looks to our heritage, and celebrates it with Real Food. Our food comes from farms and ranches that do it old school, like Mother Nature intended. We serve free range birds from Fredricksburg, as well as hormone and antibiotic free beef from Creekstone Farms. Great ingredients like Duroc Pork allow us serve up true American Pub fare that satisfies without the fuss. Luncheon, Supper and Live Bluegrass Brunch on Sunday.

'To those of us who work a few blocks away, the opening of Barcode, in the former Fourth Estate Grille space near 17th and L streets NW, qualifies as big, huge, stop-the-presses news (at least as far as our happy hour options are concerned). Gone is the casual bar-and-grill vibe of the old place; in its place comes LED lighting, brushed steel surfaces, dark-wood paneling, lounge seating and communal banquettes. A set of turntables stand by the front door, as if waiting for a passing DJ to set them in motion. It makes sense to see them, because the bar is run by the DC Hospitality Group, which also oversees Lima and UltraBar.' - Washington Post. Come enjoy an after work drink, stay for dinner and enjoy the scene.

Ted's Bulletin
American | Capitol Hill
40 reviews

'This Capitol Hill diner (on Barracks Row near Eastern Market) is a clever nod to a bygone era. Owners Mark and Ty Neal--also behind D.C.'s Matchbox restaurants--named the joint after their father, a West Virginian who was the unofficial "cook of the neighborhood." The old-timey throwback feels like the real deal here; art deco details, like carved marble door frames and metal air vents, are salvaged from the Philadelphia Civic Center circa 1928. Tables--salvaged former doors--are set with folded dish rags and a newspaper-like menu that features comfort food classics such as milkshakes, meatloaf and grilled cheese with tomato soup. Breakfast items such as short stack pancakes and home-made pop tarts are served all day. '- Lauren Sloat at Citysearch

A family restaurant in the heart of Merrifield- Let’s be honest–these days trying to pick a restaurant in Merrifield is like trying to pick a winner at Pimlico before the first heat. And with such a wide selection, it’s difficult to know how to handicap them. But now we have Ted’s BULLETIN in the starter’s gate – a real American classic joint with a bit of style. As diners will figure out early, the fare is unabashedly familiar– like ma’s blueberry pie but a damn sight better–and that’s great for kids and adults alike. And far from primitive, there’s nothing gussied up about BULLETIN except the trappings and lights from the old Philly Convention Hall where Joe Frazier first fought for a title in 1965.
