Brad Daugherty grew up in Black Mountain, North Carolina, just minutes from Asheville. After an All-American career playing basketball at The University of North Carolina, he was the first overall draft pick in the 1986 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He went on to a successful 8 year NBA career followed by becoming a Nascar Sprint Cup Series car owner of the #47 car. He commentates Nascar and NBA basketball on ESPN and admittedly loves to eat!
Brad's affinity for his home of Western North Carolina and the Asheville community made South Asheville a logical place for his own restaurant. He sought to create flavorful and well thought out food in a relaxed upscale atmosphere.
When it comes to food, enjoy regional and local cuisine borne from Brad's upbringing in Western North Carolina, fused with his experiences dining around the nation as a professional basketball player, Nascar team owner and sports commentator.

At the end of the 19th century two outdoorsmen opened a boarding house in Balsam, NC, then home to eastern America’s highest passenger railway station. They led hunting and fishing excursions into the rugged surrounding mountains, and built a name for themselves by serving wonderful food.
In 1905 they began construction of a 100-room hotel, and opened our inn in 1908. The hotel’s corridors were built extra-wide to accommodate the steamer trunks of extended-stay summertime guests, almost all of whom arrived by rail. With its 100-foot porches, spectacular views and fresh, abundant cuisine, the inn soon came to be known as the “Grand Old Lady of Balsam”.
The Balsam Mountain Inn honors the tradition begun by Joseph Kenney and Walter Christy by offering hearty, carefully prepared regional dishes using the freshest possible ingredients.
