A word from Rye
Rye, a restaurant celebrating Midwestern recipes, traditions, and culture using local Kansas & Missouri flavors and farmers. Rye restaurant in Leawood, Kansas, just south of Kansas City, will celebrate the Midwestern foods that chefs Megan and Colby Garrelts grew up eating. Both of these chefs are proud to be from the Midwest and Rye gives them the opportunity to showcase dishes that they have enjoyed with several generations of their families. They will pay homage to those heritage dishes that the Midwest is known for succulent smoked pork chops, aged steaks, baby back ribs, fried chicken, vegetables just off the stove, Parker House rolls, freshly made seasonal pies, fruit cobblers, and ice box cakes to name a few. Their food at Rye will take traditional dishes and give them a chef’s point of view, while preserving the important heritage of the dish. Chefs Megan and Colby will use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and products including produce from their family farm.Continued

  • "This place makes me wish I had a bigger stomach, such splendid flavors."

  • "The service and food at Rye have always been exceptional. Recently Merrell was our server and attended to our every need. She is a excellent representative for the restaurant. There were five adults and one child in our group and everyone's food selection was amazing. "

  • "My girlfriend asked the bartender if we could eat at the bar. The bartender grabbed 2 menus. At that point the 3 bartenders ignored us. it started to become obvious that we were not going to served. The couple beside us was paying their bill and that left only 2 of us at the bar. 20 minutes no drink order, no order, no eye contact. They cleaned glasses standing right in front of us. 8 o'clock the restaurant was still seating people but only us 2 at the bar. My girl friend said out loud maybe we would get served at a table. Nothing, just cleaning the wine glasses 2 feet in front of me and they refused to make eye contact. Girlfriend said maybe we'll get served at a table a snotty "enjoy your meal" was their first words to us. "

  • "The service was pushy, the steak was a bit tough and the pasta was undercooked. The Butcher Board was great!"

  • "I tried several times to get a reservation for dinner and could not. I thought this meant the place was a hot spot. I decided to take my family to brunch, which I heard was amazing. Not so. Far from being a hot spot, it was grandparents and kiddies. The food was absolutely ordinary. Very skimpy servings for high prices. I had the burnt ends hash, but had only a few morsels of soft, squishy meat. The ends were not crisp and flavorful. The red sauce was good, smothering the flavor of the bland potatoes. The eggs were sunny side, but no seasoning had been added and tasted like any other pair of eggs. The sides were all extra, when I think a slice of toast should be included. Our server was fine, polite and attentive."

  • "Shrimp and grits were really tasty. Primm's cup was a great sweet drink, while the Coffee and Cigarettes drink was quite interesting with a smoky taste they do there."

  • "Have given way too many second chances! Won't be back. First of all we waited about 30 minutes after our reservation time- not impressive as they called on advance to make sure we arrived on time and we were there on time. After 20 min wait, I checked back and was told to go back to wait area and he would come talk to me on a minute. Then told they were just "waiting on Menus" in order to seat us!!! Really??? They had a shortage of menus?? This is during our wait in which several tables and booths were open and unoccupied! Then we were crammed like sardines (as usual) into our table, we ordered an appetizer we did not get and our food literally would not fit on the tiny tables! Our waitress acted like she was overworked and out of breath."

  • "Everything was delicious. Five people in my party - three of us had the fried chicken, one had salmon, and one had the ribeye. We all loved our entrees. Dessert was delicious all around. I had the MOKAN pie - which is Missouri walnuts and Kansas pecans - oh my. Service was a little slow, though our server was fantastic."

  • "We have been many times to Rye ~ have always loved the food! We have tried different things every time. NEVER even mildly disappointed!!! Outstanding in every detail! I have told both managers that I would really like to be able to sit at the Chef's table and order off the regular menu. BOTH managers responded in writing very promptly to my suggestion. It is very obvious that Rye puts customers first ~ both in the quality of the food and service. Definitely the place we like to take out-of-town friends and family! Try it ~ you'll like it!!!"

  • "First time that my wife and I had been there. We went for brunch on Sunday, and it was amazing. Service was great, very helpful, and food/drinks were outstanding. Would highly recommend it to anyone (and I've already told pretty much everyone I know about it!)"

  • "What else can I say? ...other than the Shrimp & Grits dish is DIVINE!"

  • "I am not opposed to spending $100 on a dinner for two. But when I do, it needs to blow my socks off... either with the amazing food quality, the ambience, service or a combination of all three. Dinner at Rye was good, the service was acceptable, but my socks remained firmly on my feet. I had the salmon over wild rice. The chef prepared the salmon exactly as I instructed... a little on the rare side. But frankly I was hoping for more flavor from the fish itself. And apparently I am not a big fan of wild rice because I found it did not enhance the experience at all. My wife had the fried chicken, and again... good, but just good. In a head-to-head competition, I would probably pick Stroud's version of this American classic."

  • "We all enjoyed our food.It did not knock our socks off. Good food. Fair price. Horrible parking. My waitress never took my bill. I was paying with cash. I guess she just assumed that she could keep the change? She took my coworkers bills. They were paying with cards. She completely ignored me when collecting the bill as well as when she came back with their cards. A little presumptuous?"

  • "Been there four times, each time ordering a different entre. All have been excellent. Chicken amazing; hanger steak, most tender and flavorful I have ever eaten. Most certainly will be back."

  • "We had a wonderful brunch with two of our grandchildren - they called us for a change. I made a reservation at Rye - they had never been there before. We all ordered something different. Everyone loved their choice and thoroughly enjoyed our time together. The put us by the kitchen which was a bit noise, but we managed."

  • "Trout was great, GF too. Pasta was ok but beef dry and tasteless. Very noisy near bar."

  • "Great evening at Rye. Everything was great. I made an unfortunate choice with picking the spanish mackerel. It was skin on and too hard to get the skin off. Don't miss the cornbread fritters!"

  • "When the party of 4 I was in arrived, the hostess said that they were waiting for menus, so we could not be seated, even though we had reservations. The first thing that I noticed was the noise level. If you want to have a conversation with someone you are dinning with you should consider not eating here. The server was not attentive and if we needed something we had to track her down. We had to ask for silverware and bread. At some point, the server came over to tell us that the kitchen was behind and it would be some time before we got out food. She was right, we did have to wait quite awhile. Overall, the food was tasty."

  • "We read about Rye in Midwest Magazine and must say the review was spot on. I had the fried chicken and it beckoned back to a time when chickens were chickens and not the this manufactured monsters so common today. Portions were just right . . . I was pleasantly full but still had room for desert - banana cream pie. My wife had the roast beef sandwich and said it was on of the most tender and tasty she has ever had. She loved the chips which tasted homemade. Ambience is what I would describe as classy casual. Although a little too chilly to eat out on their patio, it looked inviting."

  • "Visited for a night out with the girls on a weeknight. Menu is pretty basic, service was good. Crowd a lot older demographic than I expected, probably because of the simple menu. Everything about this place is GOOD, I did not feel that anything was GREAT (except maybe the banana cream pie I had for dessert...that was pretty GREAT)!"

  • "The chicken livers were little bits of perfect chicken heaven. I come from a long line of southern cooks and these were perfection. Would highly recommend the Mokan pie---not so sweet it melts your teeth, just really good ( with their delicious ice cream). The shrimp and grits were also good, as was the fried chicken. My only complaint was the noise level. Our server had to practically yell at us and it was impossible to carry on a conversation in a normal speaking voice, so everyone ends up talking louder to be heard. Maybe it's all the hard surfaces. We will definitely eat there again, but maybe do takeout to avoid the noise, or eat outside in warmer weather. Try it."

  • "We have been wanting to get here for several months. We finally made the brunch here! The service was excellent. Food was even more outstanding. I had the fried chicken and my husband had the shrimp and grits. Both exceeded our expectations. WE look forward to many more adventures here."

  • "Food is always outstanding at Rye. The service can be a little slow. Set aside the time and your taste buds will be rewarded."

  • "Rye is a great bar/restaurant where quality seems to be the key. All drinks are fashioned and handcrafted with care. The steak and deserts are a must. The food will cost you money but the quality of the dinner will overshadow this. I will be going to Rye again."

  • "The best local ingredients and a love for the food of the midwest. Take everything up a notch and you have Rye. The service and relaxed atmosphere make it a place to linger over a good meal. The soup of the day is always worth inquiring about and the desserts are great. The best lemon meringue pie I've had in my life!"

  • "Food was very good and fresh. Service was impersonal and not engaging. Went there on a Sunday evening. Would try again, hopefully with a more engaging server than this, our first time at the restaurant. It was our anniversary, and the server did not ask if this was a special occasion."

  • "Fiance and I visited Rye to regroup after a long day. We had an early evening reservation, so no crowd to compete with. Enjoyed sharing the fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, a delicious dark chocolate tart with orange glaze and cocktails. Luke was an excellent server. Can't wait for our family meal here this fall!"

  • "My husband and I like to share. We did just that because it was allowed. Some restaurants won't let you do that but we don't want to take a mound of food home. We also are not huge eaters, and they served plenty for us to share sides as well as chicken. Thank you for being kind and letting this work for us. We'll be back!!!!!"

  • "The waitstaff was informative, attentive, upbeat. My reservation was originally for 3 but I changed it to 5 a week ahead of time. The message apparently did not get conveyed but the host made the changes with no problem and quickly got us to an appropriately larger table. We sat in a booth which i thought would be great for conversation but it was surprising loud in the dinning room and we were not near the kitchen. The restaurant was busy for a Monday early evening. The acoustics seen to echo sounds more than expected. it was not terrible just more than expected for the seating area, The food was excellent and timely. I would go back again and recommend to others."

  • "Great menu with unique twists on American fare. Great atmosphere! Try the Fried Chicken... their special approach always delivers a very tasty dish without being greasy. It almost feels like you're eating a healthier rendition. The shrimp and grits are quite tasty too...and that is coming from someone who doesn't typically care for grits."

  • "The ambience and service was spot on! The server was knowledgeable and attended to our every need. A very current ambience with nice lighting and very clean. The fried chicken is what I went there for and even did a set of extra sets at the gym to indulge. It wasn't all that it was hyped up to be. One of my pieces of chicken was practically meatless. There was very little flavor, normally I can eat 3-4 pieces, I ate 2 this night. Now the sides were great. The beans were crisp and just enough flavoring, the gravy was very tasteful and the mashed potatoes were just like my Grandma used make (home cooked). Overall, I will definitely go back to Rye, but next time I will try something different."

  • "Eat once at Rye and you'll know why reservations fill up fast. We went on a Sunday night and I bypassed my all-time favorite (buttered shrimp and grits) for the prime rib. Incredible. Only surpassing that was the side of curried roasted cauliflower. Loved the craft cocktails for before- and after-dining fun."

  • "Had the biscuits and gravy, my first attempt to take a bite was not very successful. The bottom of the biscuit was very hard and over cooked so when I tried to cut it with a fork it finally cut thru and threw part of the gravy and egg into my lap. Had to fight it the entire meal. Flavor was great and I liked the small salad on the side. Eggs were cooked just right. Someone else at the table had the same thing and had one biscuit that was hard on the bottom as well. We did not mention to the server as we didn't want to wait for another one to be made. The place was very noisy and it was really hard to carry on conversations with others at the table"

  • "Great service. Only semi-busy for brunch, which was great, considering the menu. Food was fun - classic brunch items, with great twists. Local, farm-raised and identifiable items, fixed to perfection. Cool atmosphere - roomy. Great unique blend of coffee by The Roasterie. Stayed and visited with friends, and felt absolutely no pressure from the staff. Highly recommended for a Sunday brunch."

  • "The Shrimp & Grits are to die for. A co - worker recommended the dish and said you will want to luck the dish. He was right. It was amazing. I added some of the hot sauce from the table and boy oh boy, so yummy. Looking for to my next visit."
