A word from Rye
Rye, a restaurant celebrating Midwestern recipes, traditions, and culture using local Kansas & Missouri flavors and farmers. Rye restaurant in Leawood, Kansas, just south of Kansas City, will celebrate the Midwestern foods that chefs Megan and Colby Garrelts grew up eating. Both of these chefs are proud to be from the Midwest and Rye gives them the opportunity to showcase dishes that they have enjoyed with several generations of their families. They will pay homage to those heritage dishes that the Midwest is known for succulent smoked pork chops, aged steaks, baby back ribs, fried chicken, vegetables just off the stove, Parker House rolls, freshly made seasonal pies, fruit cobblers, and ice box cakes to name a few. Their food at Rye will take traditional dishes and give them a chef’s point of view, while preserving the important heritage of the dish. Chefs Megan and Colby will use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and products including produce from their family farm.Continued

  • "The lunch selection was very good and reasonably priced. The food was very good and the service was fast and friendly."

  • "It has a great, affordable lunch menu, wine list, and beer selection. The service is outstanding and the food is fantastic. I would recommend it to anyone! I'll be back often."

  • "We can from San Francisco to eat here on a few day vacation. Everything was fresh and delicious. The fried chicken is REALLY great too. we hope to return again."

  • "Really wanted to be wowed, but not this time. This was my first time here, was looking forward to it, but disappointed. Waitress seemed disinterested in serving us. She looked tired & sad, so maybe she had a bad day. Had the Shrimp & Grits, but it was a small amount of grits on top of BBQ sauce with 1-2 pieces of brisket floating in it. 4 average size shrimps were on top of the grits. Grits/shrimp were ok, but combo with BBQ sauce/brisket was not very good. Still hungry so had the lemon meringue pie - top was somewhat burnt, tasted more like key lime pie, again disappointing. My friend had a burger, really enjoyed it. I'll give them a 2nd chance but some of the rest of my group said they won't be back. Should have ordered the chicken."

  • "my wife got the chicken dinner. the two pieces she got had about 2 ounces of meat between the two of them. I have the burn-end sandwich it was excellent"

  • "Food good as always, but seating not to our liking. Wanted a booth (2 we're empty)and was told that those booths were reserved......I said "oh, you can actually reserve booths?". To which the hostess replied "No, booths can't be reserved". Hmmmmm Think I'll find another place to eat for awhile...."

  • "We were celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary and it was great. One of the great things about going to a chef owned restaurant is you know the food will be perfect, and it was. The only surprising thing was the very reasonable price. Thanks and we will be back."

  • "Celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary at Rye. The staff/service were amazing, parts of the meal were fabulous, the ambiance was "congested" and not romantic in the least."

  • "Amish chicken was a bit too spicy though the meat was tender and delicious. Would have appreciated a warning from waiter when we decided on this item. We mentioned this to waiter as our mouths were slightly burning but he said nothing - I thought he might have the manager come talk to us, but no. My friend ordered lemonade - she said it tasted like one lemon per 8 cups of water. I think the decanter of water on the table is a lovely idea, however, the water was rather warm - I prefer ice. When I asked for ice the waiter brought a different glass with ice water in it. I think a bit of color on the Amish chicken plate would be great - even a single cherry tomato for a much more appealing look."

  • "I liked the decor, service and concept of Rye. It was a little bit too loud (especially since it wasn't completely full) and I ordered a salad instead of what I wanted ( fried chicken). The salad was mediocre at best, but everyone else Raved about their food. I will go back and try out some of the other menu items."

  • "I surprised my wife with dinner here, the first time either one of us had been there. Drinks at the bar are top notch, the waitress was extremely friendly and helpful with us making our decisions on dinner. The fried green tomatoes appetizer is the best I've ever had. My wife loved it too, first time she had ever tried it."

  • "Service was outstanding. Fried chicken; crispy outside and properly cooked all the way through, Flavor of chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy = bland, bland, bland. Expected much better from the co-owners of Bluestem."

  • "The food was very good, the wine list was great with something for everyone. We sat at the bar and Chris, the bartender, was a great server. My husband has a food allergy, and Rye was very good about accommodating his allergy. Will definitely be back to Rye again."

  • "I am a choosy, semi-obnoxious foodie type and I cannot say enough good things about Colby and Megan Garrelt's new venue. Delicious cocktails(try the gimlet) and from there, everything was delightful beginning with the goat cheese and honey app, deviled eggs, arugula salad, fresh pea soup, followed by an amazing tender flank steak with the freshest chimichurri possible. If this wasn't enough- we finished with what is possibly the best lemon meringue and caramel pie in the entire world. I would literally eat there every day. Our server was just as impressive and the wine selections were great, too. Go there to eat the freshest, most delicious food with a twist in town. And be sure to try a variety from the menu!"

  • "Had a wonderful time and lunch. Will be back again. We are a group of childhood friends that meet every 1-2 months for lunch. Good place for our visit."

  • "My own experience was great - the whiting was delicious (maybe a wee bit too salty) and the shared desserts were incredible. My friend, however, ordered the house salad that was supposed to have cranberries and goat cheese. There was minimal goat cheese and no cranberries whatsoever. She also ordered deviled eggs, which she said tasted too odd to eat. Both items were taken off the bill. After that, another waitress showed up to take our dessert order because ours was "too busy" at the moment. Also, despite noting in our online reservation that it was a birthday celebration, nobody seemed aware of it."

  • "After reading many columns and reviews about Rye we were anxious to give it a try. We were predisposed to try the famous fried chicken. Starting with a Margarita (average) and a Pimm's Cup we opted for the deviled egg snack which was good. The bread basket with corn muffins and yeast rolls was fine but nothing out of the ordinary. The fried chicken was good but in our opinion has nothing on Stroud's. The pan roasted green beans were unique but that's about it. For dessert we shared banana cream pie and we're disappointed by the crust and whipped cream topping, it seemed more like a grocery store pie than what we anticipated. Not a bad experience by any means but for us Rye falls short of the hype."

  • "Service was slow for our 8:15 Saturday night reservation. The food was good but not outstanding as expected, the lemon pie was the star of the meal. The coffee was lukewarm after a long wait and arrived well after the pie was served. Management must have turned off the air conditioning when the crowd began to thin, not a pleasant end to the meal when humidity levels are high. Also a few ice cubes in the water glass would be nice. Rye will not be high on our list for a return trip. Very loud!"

  • "This was our first visit to Rye and after our experience I'm sure we will be returning soon. Even though we had an elderly man seated next to us who complained repeatedly, the Staff did a great job of handling the situation. Some people just want to be difficult. The Fried Chicken was almost as good as Mom's, the Strip Steak was cooked to perfection and the Coconut Cream Pie was the perfect finish. All in all a good evening. Mom's fried chicken will always be the best, but this was close."

  • "We had dinner at Rye w/four people in our party. The shrimp & grits were better than I've at home in South Carolina. The whipped goat cheese is a must have. Service was very good. We'll be back again."

  • "DaMissus and I went to Rye to celebrate 34 interesting and loving yrs. I had the house salad while Debby had the whipped ricotta with fresh spring vegetables. Outstanding!! For entrees we went "sea." I had the whiting while DaMissus had the trout. Both were moist and tasted of the sea. we ordered and shared two sides, the spring beets and fried green tomatoes. The beets were prepared with a touch of horseradish while the tomatoes had a cooling ranch(?) dressing on the side. Best beets ever!! For desert Debbie had some ice cream while I had a slice of coconut cream pie. Excellent end to a wonderful meal."

  • "We all had fried chicken and it was fantastic. The drinks were so yummy as well. The $30 deposit for the copper mug for the moscow mule was a bit much, but it was worth it."

  • "This was the second time in a short time that I met a friend for lunch. We came at 11:45 am for our noon booking to beat the rush that can come later. Again I had one of their entree salads which are always unique and enjoyable. Desert was great too!"

  • "Lunch was great: the food was wonderful (can you believe non-greasy fried chicken and lemon pie with real meringue?) and the ambience was just right (lively, but not too noisy). Can't wait to go back!"

  • "A little pricey, but great cocktails and good service. We don't go here a whole lot, but are repeat customers and enjoy the drinks and excellent food."

  • "Rye was recommended to us by a local resident (we were from out-of-town). We received excellent service from the moment we walked in the door. Receptionist, bar tender, server were all very professional and very knowledgable. The food was excellent and we were happy to also learn that Rye is flexible with vegetarians and the chef can even offer a special vegetarian meal, upon request. But other items on the menu made up a great vegetarian meal on their own. All 5 of us in our party were extremely happy with the experience, the food, the drinks, the desserts, everything!"

    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "Location is suburb, the ambience warm and inviting however the description of the food on the menu did not match the flavor profile for example the shrimp and grits was soaking in "barbecue " sauce. There was nothing in the description of this dish that would indicate the predominant flavor was barbecue sauce. I've heard the fried chicken is excellent not for sure I will go back to give it a try."

  • "We could not stay. My wife has asthma and the restaurant smelled strongly of smoke. A waiter told us due to rains the hood was not working. Not wanting to stir up her asthma we were forced to leave, sadly."

  • "Rye is such a great place for dinner! Their cocktails are delicious and their wine list wide! The food is incredible, I have never had a bad experience. I love their hanger steak, and the shrimp and grits (holy moly) truly heavenly! The service was awesome I wish I could remember our waiters name because he was awesome! So attentive and yet not a bother! If you go definitely try their boulvardia cocktail it's boozy but fresh and unique! Being in a foodie town there are a lot of options but this is must try!"
