A word from Rye
Rye, a restaurant celebrating Midwestern recipes, traditions, and culture using local Kansas & Missouri flavors and farmers. Rye restaurant in Leawood, Kansas, just south of Kansas City, will celebrate the Midwestern foods that chefs Megan and Colby Garrelts grew up eating. Both of these chefs are proud to be from the Midwest and Rye gives them the opportunity to showcase dishes that they have enjoyed with several generations of their families. They will pay homage to those heritage dishes that the Midwest is known for succulent smoked pork chops, aged steaks, baby back ribs, fried chicken, vegetables just off the stove, Parker House rolls, freshly made seasonal pies, fruit cobblers, and ice box cakes to name a few. Their food at Rye will take traditional dishes and give them a chef’s point of view, while preserving the important heritage of the dish. Chefs Megan and Colby will use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and products including produce from their family farm.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I always have an excellent time at Rye. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, the service is attentive and the food is really good. On this occasion I brought a friend (her 1st time). We had a fantastic time!"

  • "Our server was very knowledgeable and professional, and helped create a pleasant dining experience. The restaurant's ambience and décor were great; however, the noise level was deafening - not at all conducive to conversation. The food was OK, but overpriced, I felt - especially with all of the a la carte items, which added up substantially on the cheque for a dinner for four. In the future, I would save a visit to Rye for a special occasion, or possibly for lunch."

  • "Third time returning to Rye when visiting Kansas City. The food has always been excellent and there's always something on the menu to keep the adults and teenagers in the family happy. Service is friendly and attentive. Excellent wine list with many affordable options on their $40 and under list. Plan to return again and again."

  • "We have enjoyed dining at Rye many times! There are so many yummy dishes on the menu that we have tried & we have our favorites, too. The double cut pork chop is outstanding! The hangar steak is tender and delicious, too! So many choices; wonderful decor; comfortable place to dine!"

  • "Second visit, this time with another couple. Very pleasant dining. Fun menu, with tweaks from two weeks ago to keep it fresh and interesting. Good effort to source local produce, three special veggie appetizers / sides. We did salmon, whitefish. both were spot-on perfect. Wine list is decent, good choices without being overwhelming. Reasonably priced. They have a lively patio dining service, but we'll wait to do that until the obnoxious construction right next door ends. Side note, most of the ladies dining and at the bar are very fashionable. Our server Kim was exceptional. Parking is an issue, leave a few minutes to find a space."

  • "This is about the fifth time I have eaten at Rye. The first experience was average, mostly because the fried chicken needed another two minutes in the fryer. It was cookd but not quite done to suit me. Every subsequent time the food has been excellent. The grits are really good, fried chicken, and the cured meat appetizer is excellent. Service has been excellent and i had a wonderful old fashioned to start off the meal. Highly recommended, but make a reservation, particularly on the weekend."

  • "I went with group of girls and it was so noisy it was hard to visit. Our table was so close to the next one I could have joined in their conversation. Also, the server had to squeeze between our table and theirs to serve them. A lot of the night was spent with her rear in my face. Not her fault but still not pleasant. Otherwise, the food is excellent."

  • "Went for lunch and had the fried chicken. It was good but the portion sizes are extremely small. Had one leg about 3 inches long and another piece (I think was part of a breast) about the size of a golf ball. Service was good and the place is clean. All in all, nothing to brag about."

  • "Love everything about this place. Menu isn't big but it's all wonderful. Atmosphere is casual but feels special. Service is great. Fun energy at the bar."

  • "Visitors to the area, we've been exploring restaurants in the Overland Park / Leawood KS area and found Rye to be the best so far. Great fried chicken (when you're not in the mood for something more exotic), prime rib as well as soups, sides and desserts. Helpful and friendly service as well."

  • "Had eaten there a lot when opened, had not been back for several months. Service was adequate but stilted, no energy. Love setting( sorry to see pond view so diminished). Food was very good but totally missed on green fried tomatoes( used ripe red ones), chicken breast was very small."

  • "I brought a group of 7 girls to the restaruant for a first time Rye dinner. There were lots of questions and lots of ladies to please and Rye scored all the way around the table! Fried green tables were outstanding, a 2nd order was placed . . . the manager continued to check in on us and our waiter was very patient form a service standpoint. I opted for the whitefish and it was beautiful, I know the menu changes with the seasons and I will be back to check things out."

  • "Rye makes good, traditional, home style food with a twist. The service was excellent, as were the drinks. It was a little tough to find (our fist time there) but it was worth our hour + drive to get there."

  • "Rye is in a league on its own. the brunch menu is literally perfect, there wasn't one item I didn't want to try. The option to do lunch was great, but don't pass on the breakfast as you will regret not tasting the omelette selection, the French toast, pancakes not to mention the incredible steak and eggs. Also if you don't try the "ryed" chicken you are missing out on a gem."

  • "Great evening out with friends. Appetizers we enjoyed: butcher block, goat cheese spread and chicken livers. All were good, but the livers were amazing! Next time I may have to order them for my main meal. Ribeye, filet and hanger steaks were all great too. Each course was ordered and delivered at our speed. Never felt rushed. Our waiter was informative and attentive. Highly recommend."

  • "The food was very good, but in my opinion, overpriced. $7.00 for a little bowl of mashed potatoes is ridiculous."

  • "Really wanted to be wowed, but not this time. This was my first time here, was looking forward to it, but disappointed. Waitress seemed disinterested in serving us. She looked tired & sad, so maybe she had a bad day. Had the Shrimp & Grits, but it was a small amount of grits on top of BBQ sauce with 1-2 pieces of brisket floating in it. 4 average size shrimps were on top of the grits. Grits/shrimp were ok, but combo with BBQ sauce/brisket was not very good. Still hungry so had the lemon meringue pie - top was somewhat burnt, tasted more like key lime pie, again disappointing. My friend had a burger, really enjoyed it. I'll give them a 2nd chance but some of the rest of my group said they won't be back. Should have ordered the chicken."

  • "Food good as always, but seating not to our liking. Wanted a booth (2 we're empty)and was told that those booths were reserved......I said "oh, you can actually reserve booths?". To which the hostess replied "No, booths can't be reserved". Hmmmmm Think I'll find another place to eat for awhile...."

  • "We were celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary and it was great. One of the great things about going to a chef owned restaurant is you know the food will be perfect, and it was. The only surprising thing was the very reasonable price. Thanks and we will be back."

  • "I surprised my wife with dinner here, the first time either one of us had been there. Drinks at the bar are top notch, the waitress was extremely friendly and helpful with us making our decisions on dinner. The fried green tomatoes appetizer is the best I've ever had. My wife loved it too, first time she had ever tried it."

  • "Celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary at Rye. The staff/service were amazing, parts of the meal were fabulous, the ambiance was "congested" and not romantic in the least."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "The food was very good, the wine list was great with something for everyone. We sat at the bar and Chris, the bartender, was a great server. My husband has a food allergy, and Rye was very good about accommodating his allergy. Will definitely be back to Rye again."

  • "Service was outstanding. Fried chicken; crispy outside and properly cooked all the way through, Flavor of chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy = bland, bland, bland. Expected much better from the co-owners of Bluestem."

  • "I liked the decor, service and concept of Rye. It was a little bit too loud (especially since it wasn't completely full) and I ordered a salad instead of what I wanted ( fried chicken). The salad was mediocre at best, but everyone else Raved about their food. I will go back and try out some of the other menu items."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Amish chicken was a bit too spicy though the meat was tender and delicious. Would have appreciated a warning from waiter when we decided on this item. We mentioned this to waiter as our mouths were slightly burning but he said nothing - I thought he might have the manager come talk to us, but no. My friend ordered lemonade - she said it tasted like one lemon per 8 cups of water. I think the decanter of water on the table is a lovely idea, however, the water was rather warm - I prefer ice. When I asked for ice the waiter brought a different glass with ice water in it. I think a bit of color on the Amish chicken plate would be great - even a single cherry tomato for a much more appealing look."

  • "I am a choosy, semi-obnoxious foodie type and I cannot say enough good things about Colby and Megan Garrelt's new venue. Delicious cocktails(try the gimlet) and from there, everything was delightful beginning with the goat cheese and honey app, deviled eggs, arugula salad, fresh pea soup, followed by an amazing tender flank steak with the freshest chimichurri possible. If this wasn't enough- we finished with what is possibly the best lemon meringue and caramel pie in the entire world. I would literally eat there every day. Our server was just as impressive and the wine selections were great, too. Go there to eat the freshest, most delicious food with a twist in town. And be sure to try a variety from the menu!"

  • "My own experience was great - the whiting was delicious (maybe a wee bit too salty) and the shared desserts were incredible. My friend, however, ordered the house salad that was supposed to have cranberries and goat cheese. There was minimal goat cheese and no cranberries whatsoever. She also ordered deviled eggs, which she said tasted too odd to eat. Both items were taken off the bill. After that, another waitress showed up to take our dessert order because ours was "too busy" at the moment. Also, despite noting in our online reservation that it was a birthday celebration, nobody seemed aware of it."

  • "After reading many columns and reviews about Rye we were anxious to give it a try. We were predisposed to try the famous fried chicken. Starting with a Margarita (average) and a Pimm's Cup we opted for the deviled egg snack which was good. The bread basket with corn muffins and yeast rolls was fine but nothing out of the ordinary. The fried chicken was good but in our opinion has nothing on Stroud's. The pan roasted green beans were unique but that's about it. For dessert we shared banana cream pie and we're disappointed by the crust and whipped cream topping, it seemed more like a grocery store pie than what we anticipated. Not a bad experience by any means but for us Rye falls short of the hype."

  • "Service was slow for our 8:15 Saturday night reservation. The food was good but not outstanding as expected, the lemon pie was the star of the meal. The coffee was lukewarm after a long wait and arrived well after the pie was served. Management must have turned off the air conditioning when the crowd began to thin, not a pleasant end to the meal when humidity levels are high. Also a few ice cubes in the water glass would be nice. Rye will not be high on our list for a return trip. Very loud!"

  • "We had dinner at Rye w/four people in our party. The shrimp & grits were better than I've at home in South Carolina. The whipped goat cheese is a must have. Service was very good. We'll be back again."
