A word from Rye
Rye, a restaurant celebrating Midwestern recipes, traditions, and culture using local Kansas & Missouri flavors and farmers. Rye restaurant in Leawood, Kansas, just south of Kansas City, will celebrate the Midwestern foods that chefs Megan and Colby Garrelts grew up eating. Both of these chefs are proud to be from the Midwest and Rye gives them the opportunity to showcase dishes that they have enjoyed with several generations of their families. They will pay homage to those heritage dishes that the Midwest is known for succulent smoked pork chops, aged steaks, baby back ribs, fried chicken, vegetables just off the stove, Parker House rolls, freshly made seasonal pies, fruit cobblers, and ice box cakes to name a few. Their food at Rye will take traditional dishes and give them a chef’s point of view, while preserving the important heritage of the dish.   • "We each ate every bite of our lunch - I the salmon and my husband the fried chicken. The salmon was some of the best I've ever eaten and the wild rice accompaniment was fantastic! My husband said the fried chicken was definitely the best he had ever eaten, and the mashed potatoes and gravy were wonderful additions. We hope both dishes are still on the menu when we return in a few days!! We would recommend them without a moment's hesitation!"

  • "Rye was sadly out of their Sunday special, prime rib, and the whitefish, the two entrees we had gone there for. Our substitutions were just so-so, not up to the standard of those two dishes. Next time, I guess we'll bypass online reservations and call to make sure what we want is available."

  • "First, the servers all helped each other and also helped your table, almost like a big communal experience although don't get visions of a food hall at camp. This place is very classy, with great lighting, spacious seating, and delicious food. I ordered the hanger steak with salad, a side of greens and app of warm goat cheese/honey and spices. Delish! Service was very attentive and there were small touches throughout the restaurant like a kettle that poured out your soup when you ordered it, local sauces to use on the table and more. Highly recommend this place although snobbishly, I wish it were more near midtown then it's current location. However, I will concede to Johnson County as they need more farm to table places."

The chicken is excellent my son and I both had it(he ate my pickles too) My daughter-in-law said the walleye was also excellent, but did not offer to share. My wife had the delicious ribs, but did share one rib with each of use yummy! The only thing that they need to do is HAVE MORE PARKING!. But they are building a parking garage next to the Rye so soon it will all be good."

The restaurant's ambience and décor were great; however, the noise level was deafening - not at all conducive to conversation. The food was OK, but overpriced, I felt - especially with all of the a la carte items, which added up substantially on the cheque for a dinner for four. In the future, I would save a visit to Rye for a special occasion, or possibly for lunch."

  • "Second visit, this time with another couple. Very pleasant dining. Fun menu, with tweaks from two weeks ago to keep it fresh and interesting. Good effort to source local produce, three special veggie appetizers / sides. We did salmon, whitefish. both were spot-on perfect. Wine list is decent, good choices without being overwhelming. Reasonably priced. They have a lively patio dining service, but we'll wait to do that until the obnoxious construction right next door ends. Side note, most of the ladies dining and at the bar are very fashionable. Our server Kim was exceptional. Parking is an issue, leave a few minutes to find a space."

  • "This is about the fifth time I have eaten at Rye. The first experience was average, mostly because the fried chicken needed another two minutes in the fryer. It was cookd but not quite done to suit me. Every subsequent time the food has been excellent. The grits are really good, fried chicken, and the cured meat appetizer is excellent. Service has been excellent and i had a wonderful old fashioned to start off the meal. Highly recommended, but make a reservation, particularly on the weekend."

  • "I went with group of girls and it was so noisy it was hard to visit. Our table was so close to the next one I could have joined in their conversation. Also, the server had to squeeze between our table and theirs to serve them. A lot of the night was spent with her rear in my face. Not her fault but still not pleasant. Fried green tables were outstanding, a 2nd order was placed . . . the manager continued to check in on us and our waiter was very patient form a service standpoint. I opted for the whitefish and it was beautiful, I know the menu changes with the seasons and I will be back to check things out."

The option to do lunch was great, but don't pass on the breakfast as you will regret not tasting the omelette selection, the French toast, pancakes not to mention the incredible steak and eggs. Also if you don't try the "ryed" chicken you are missing out on a gem."

  • "Great evening out with friends. Appetizers we enjoyed: butcher block, goat cheese spread and chicken livers. All were good, but the livers were amazing! Next time I may have to order them for my main meal. Ribeye, filet and hanger steaks were all great too. Each course was ordered and delivered at our speed. Never felt rushed. Our waiter was informative and attentive. Highly recommend."

  • "Really wanted to be wowed, but not this time. This was my first time here, was looking forward to it, but disappointed. Waitress seemed disinterested in serving us. She looked tired & sad, so maybe she had a bad day. Had the Shrimp & Grits, but it was a small amount of grits on top of BBQ sauce with 1-2 pieces of brisket floating in it. 4 average size shrimps were on top of the grits. Grits/shrimp were ok, but combo with BBQ sauce/brisket was not very good. Still hungry so had the lemon meringue pie - top was somewhat burnt, tasted more like key lime pie, again disappointing. My friend had a burger, really enjoyed it. I'll give them a 2nd chance but some of the rest of my group said they won't be back. Should have ordered the chicken."
