A word from Rye
Rye, a restaurant celebrating Midwestern recipes, traditions, and culture using local Kansas & Missouri flavors and farmers. Rye restaurant in Leawood, Kansas, just south of Kansas City, will celebrate the Midwestern foods that chefs Megan and Colby Garrelts grew up eating. Both of these chefs are proud to be from the Midwest and Rye gives them the opportunity to showcase dishes that they have enjoyed with several generations of their families. They will pay homage to those heritage dishes that the Midwest is known for succulent smoked pork chops, aged steaks, baby back ribs, fried chicken, vegetables just off the stove, Parker House rolls, freshly made seasonal pies, fruit cobblers, and ice box cakes to name a few. Their food at Rye will take traditional dishes and give them a chef’s point of view, while preserving the important heritage of the dish. Chefs Megan and Colby will use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and products including produce from their family farm.Continued

  • "We celebrated my birthday and my mothers. It was a great dinner with very good service. Our party had salmon, steak, and of course the chicken. We all liked our meals and enjoyed the drinks from the bar. It is not quiet but you can hear the people in your party. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Simply but delicious food. If you want to feel warm, cozy and get an amazing meal, Rye always hits the spot. Fun and yummy drinks, great wine selection and the food never disappoints."

  • "The food is delicious and the service is outstanding."

  • "Atmosphere was nice and the menu is different enough to give the restaurant it's own leg to stand on. The fried chicken held up to its reputation of the #1 menu item."

  • "We arrived a party of 4 plus a newborn just a week old, the tables are very nice and spacious in the main dining room. The tables are sturdy and simple giving a comfortable feel. We were celebrating our new born daughter and our parents anniversary (41). So we started with a mix of wine, coffee and espresso among the group. The wine selection is wide in breadth, perfect for those seeking options. We started with donut holes with powdered sugar and butter, a blackberry lemon scone, and a cinnamon roll. If you like donuts and don't always like the super sweetness then these are perfect donuts with coffee. The various selections are diffuse enough where more are needed. For those who need to customize they are perfectly capable of doing so."

  • "We love the fried chicken - it is always delicious, as are the side dishes. The desserts are outstanding! They have a lovely patio with great seating around a fire pit if you just want a drink - great after-dinner drink menu!"

  • "I love Bluestem, and hadn't been to Rye. The dinner fell short of my high expectations. The Lake Superior Whitefish - outstanding. Fantastic. The décor & service, very friendly, attentive, & helpful. Bartenders friendly & willing to make suggestions. Drinks strong - less flavorful than expected. The served said fried chicken is signature item. We ordered a piece. The crust excellent - crispy but not hard & rich taste. The chicken itself (Breast) didn't impress. It was somewhat dry. White meat is dry, but this fell below my expectations. We tried cottage fries - good, but not great. Overall, very good, but not as great a Bluestem. Some items definitely better than others."

  • "The food was delicious! However, the service was a little slow. But overall, I would definitely go back."

  • "Our experience was very good. The food was fantastic. The meal was interrupted by a false fire alarm which took some time to quell. We have enjoyed dinner at other times and found the experience an enjoyable one. In some locations within the restaurant, the noise level disrupts normal conversation levels."

  • "Rye is the whole package! Atmosphere was fun, food great and service was outstanding."

  • "We went for lunch and the food was excellent - high quality with a reasonable price."

  • "Loved every aspect of it! Enjoyed having food that I knew would be fresh and natural!"

  • "This was our first visit. Menu was very gluten-free friendly (wife is celiac). Wife had the picnic pork and I had the salmon. Also had the shrimp appetizer. Finished with the sundae for dessert. Food tasted great and service was excellent as well. Also enjoyed the atmosphere/décor."
    Dined on 8/5/2014
  • "From this first visit, it is clear that the kitchen pays attention to primary food materials, treating them with clarity of flavors. The steak tartare was pure fresh beefiness, the fried greens rich in vegetal flavors, the fried chicken both full of chicken juices and great crust. A great restaurant for anyone who appreciates excellently made food."

  • "The fried chicken is amazing and is only surpassed by the gravy they serve with the mashed potatoes! This meal was fantastic, just like on the farm where I grew up. I would choose Rye over Strouds any day. Amazing home-made farm pickles, bread and fried green tomatoes. We will be back!"

  • "Brunch options were great - Grab some cinnamon rolls if you can get them before they sell out. Portions are huge! Pancakes (2) the size of a dinner plate with fresh fruit. Grits weren't traditional (I prefer no cream) but good nonetheless. Eggs benedict, tasty! B&G really good. Great Roasterie coffee and wonderful service. Enjoy!"

  • "What a wonderful place we found out about. I can't believe you've been open for 2 years and we just learned about you. I was riding down the elevator at work. I over heard the two guys talking about where they were going taking the clients for dinner - Rye. It's a great home cooked food, an American favorite and the best fried chicken. (one of the guys was from France) So I asked a friend of mine about Rye and she just heard about it from her mom. So we decided to go there for my friends birthday. The three of us had a wonderful time, soaking up all the character of the restaurant, good home grown food & spices and the choices were great. To top off the meal - Dessert, Yummy! We will come back."

  • "Wonderful place for lunch and they have the best patio in the city."
    Dined on 7/31/2014
  • "We each ate every bite of our lunch - I the salmon and my husband the fried chicken. The salmon was some of the best I've ever eaten and the wild rice accompaniment was fantastic! My husband said the fried chicken was definitely the best he had ever eaten, and the mashed potatoes and gravy were wonderful additions. We hope both dishes are still on the menu when we return in a few days!! We would recommend them without a moment's hesitation!"

  • "Rye was sadly out of their Sunday special, prime rib, and the whitefish, the two entrees we had gone there for. Our substitutions were just so-so, not up to the standard of those two dishes. Next time, I guess we'll bypass online reservations and call to make sure what we want is available."

  • "First, the servers all helped each other and also helped your table, almost like a big communal experience although don't get visions of a food hall at camp. This place is very classy, with great lighting, spacious seating, and delicious food. I ordered the hanger steak with salad, a side of greens and app of warm goat cheese/honey and spices. Delish! Service was very attentive and there were small touches throughout the restaurant like a kettle that poured out your soup when you ordered it, local sauces to use on the table and more. Highly recommend this place although snobbishly, I wish it were more near midtown then it's current location. However, I will concede to Johnson County as they need more farm to table places."

  • "Great place for special occasion. I treated my wife for her birthday to lunch along with another couple. Everyone raved over the food and service. We all will recommend Rye to our friends and family."

  • "Great outdoor patio. Building is going on so we will have to wait and see how this affects the atmosphere."

  • "Rye was a great spot to spend our anniversary. The food was excellent, and service was great and we enjoyed eating on the patio. We have already told our friends, and we will definitely be back."
    Dined on 7/24/2014
  • "This is the third time that we have eaten there. The chicken is excellent my son and I both had it(he ate my pickles too) My daughter-in-law said the walleye was also excellent, but did not offer to share. My wife had the delicious ribs, but did share one rib with each of use yummy! The only thing that they need to do is HAVE MORE PARKING!. But they are building a parking garage next to the Rye so soon it will all be good."

  • "Dined on a Sat. night and the wait for entrees was unacceptable. Not sure I will make the drive again."

  • "I always have an excellent time at Rye. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, the service is attentive and the food is really good. On this occasion I brought a friend (her 1st time). We had a fantastic time!"

  • "Our server was very knowledgeable and professional, and helped create a pleasant dining experience. The restaurant's ambience and décor were great; however, the noise level was deafening - not at all conducive to conversation. The food was OK, but overpriced, I felt - especially with all of the a la carte items, which added up substantially on the cheque for a dinner for four. In the future, I would save a visit to Rye for a special occasion, or possibly for lunch."

  • "Third time returning to Rye when visiting Kansas City. The food has always been excellent and there's always something on the menu to keep the adults and teenagers in the family happy. Service is friendly and attentive. Excellent wine list with many affordable options on their $40 and under list. Plan to return again and again."
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "We have enjoyed dining at Rye many times! There are so many yummy dishes on the menu that we have tried & we have our favorites, too. The double cut pork chop is outstanding! The hangar steak is tender and delicious, too! So many choices; wonderful decor; comfortable place to dine!"

  • "Second visit, this time with another couple. Very pleasant dining. Fun menu, with tweaks from two weeks ago to keep it fresh and interesting. Good effort to source local produce, three special veggie appetizers / sides. We did salmon, whitefish. both were spot-on perfect. Wine list is decent, good choices without being overwhelming. Reasonably priced. They have a lively patio dining service, but we'll wait to do that until the obnoxious construction right next door ends. Side note, most of the ladies dining and at the bar are very fashionable. Our server Kim was exceptional. Parking is an issue, leave a few minutes to find a space."

  • "Brought my out-of-town guests and they were impressed!"

  • "This is about the fifth time I have eaten at Rye. The first experience was average, mostly because the fried chicken needed another two minutes in the fryer. It was cookd but not quite done to suit me. Every subsequent time the food has been excellent. The grits are really good, fried chicken, and the cured meat appetizer is excellent. Service has been excellent and i had a wonderful old fashioned to start off the meal. Highly recommended, but make a reservation, particularly on the weekend."

  • "I went with group of girls and it was so noisy it was hard to visit. Our table was so close to the next one I could have joined in their conversation. Also, the server had to squeeze between our table and theirs to serve them. A lot of the night was spent with her rear in my face. Not her fault but still not pleasant. Otherwise, the food is excellent."

  • "Went for lunch and had the fried chicken. It was good but the portion sizes are extremely small. Had one leg about 3 inches long and another piece (I think was part of a breast) about the size of a golf ball. Service was good and the place is clean. All in all, nothing to brag about."
    Dined on 7/14/2014
  • "We went there to celebrate our anniversary and had the best time! From our service to the amazing fried chicken our overall experience was better than we could have ever wanted!"
