A word from Rye
Cal Elliott's Rye is at heart a classic neighborhood restaurant. Rye's casual elegance offers something excellent for everyone, from an intimate dining experience to a festive group feast.
Rye embodies Brooklyn's living and breathing history - a poignant example of how both past and present continue to coexist harmoniously on Williamsburg's south side. Rye, free from outside investors, remains true to the DIY spirit and history
of the Brooklyn neighborhood in which it resides.

  • "Wasn't that happy with the Rye Benedict that I ordered. The pieces of pork belly were too overdone and very, very small. There should have been more hashbrowns too! "

  • "I came here with a party of 7 adults and one toddler for brunch on Easter Sunday. Everyone was very happy with their food and we ordered just about everything on the menu. The service was good, a little slow since it was really crowded. But nothing unreasonable and since we had a lot to talk about, we were fine with waiting. Sadly they don't have any high chairs or booster seats. So if you're bringing a small child, prepare accordingly. The decor is cute with mis-matched dishes and cutlery. If you come during brunch, it gets quite loud. Overall, really good food and would certainly come back if in the area."

  • "We enjoyed our brunch on Easter Sunday -- the various egg dishes were scrumptious -- the ingredients were fresh and tasty! It is a fairly noisy venue, but a lot of fun to people-watch. Staff allowed us extra time at the table as we waited for our guests to arrive, and did not rush us out the door after our meal. Fun place to dine in Williamsburg!"

  • "Rye was great about accommodating 2 more guests at the last minute. Our waiter Chris was knowledgable about the wine and the food and made our group feel comfortable and welcome. He was patient and kind with our large group and enhanced our dining experience immeasurably. Food was outstanding and cocktails sublime and atmosphere electric."

  • "I love Rye. They have a great brunch and wonderful dinner. The food is perfectly prepared. The staff is friendly and professional. I've gone for birthdays, to catch up with friends, and have brought my parents. Just had dinner there with my dad and we had a great time. They gave us a quiet booth table in the back, per our request. We shared oysters, scallop cevice, each had the salmon with perfectly crispy skin, and warm chocolate cake and pistachio ice cream for dessert. The wine list had great options at several price levels. It was a lavish dinner and a great experience."

  • "I invited some of my friends on a weekday night to celebrate my birthday and we were able to reserve a table on the same day, great service, amazing food and good wine. The people working at Rye were super friendly and gave good recommendations on wine and food."

  • "I found out about RYE from one of those "food" shows on TV. It was highly recommended so I saved their website as a 'favorite'. When I recently picked up some tickets for Black Sabbath at the Barclays Center, I made sure to make a reservation to eat at RYE. Both the restaurant and the concert were fantastic ! The menu is pretty interesting. Being a fan of meatloaf (the food, not the band), my friend ordered RYE's famous Meatloaf Sandwich. I had the Oysters, the Brussels Sprouts, and the Salmon. The food was delicious and the service was great. The tables are a bit small but the place looks really cool ; like an old fashioned pub from the early 1900's. It was well worth the trip and next time I think I'll try meatloaf myself . . ."

  • "The food here was great, and the Brussels Sprouts were out of this world - have never had better. Odd to rave about a side, but they really were that good. I got the meatloaf sandwich which was also great. Great cocktail list and wine too. Was with a group of six (automatic 20% grat.) so could have affected the waitress's attitude. She just wasn't very friendly. Also my wife ordered a duck confit appetizer as a main and it was brought out with all the apps. It was pretty obvious when it just sat there untouched through the apps until everyone's mains came out, and usually at a nice restaurant either a) this doesn't happen or b) the waitstaff recognizes and corrects the situation. I'd still recommend it because the food is great."

  • "Excellent local place with an interesting take on brunch items. They take familiar ingredients and put them together in newer combinations, all of which worked well and with a savory aspect. The biscuits were good, but expensive at $6.00 for three, as were the donuts. The drinks, such as the Red Rooster, their version of a Bloody Mary, were a tad on the expensive side at $11 each, and a little small. But they tasted fine. All in all, a good, if somewhat pricey experience."

  • "Rye is just one of the best dining experiences you can have. The food, service and decor are all awesome. I have loved everything i have ever tried at Rye. We just had a great dinner for seven and everything was top notch. Love this place."

  • "great oysters. Great bone in rib-eye, as in, spectacular - among best i have ever had! Complimented by a great Bordeaux Blend from washington state. Mac and cheese side also spectacular. Cant wait to go back"

  • "Really a great experience, from the food (artichoke salad special was delicious, and we both had the chicken for dinner which was amazing) and the service (Maggie has a great knowledge of the menu and a great attitude too), as well as the hostess and other staff, this is a definite recommend. Try the cocktails too, which are all very well balanced (the spicy tequila cocktail hit the spot!). Enjoy and cheers!"

  • "Rye was very nice. Food prepared well and very tasty. My ribs and the ravioli was delicious. However, a very good restaurant is based on the whole experience from the beginning cocktail to the delicious food, nice wine and excellent service. So the disappointment was the cocktails. Our Martinis' were served in 'aperitif' glasses and were watered down!!! It is a shame when you go to a really nice restaurant , like Rye, and you start with a cocktail, you are immediately turned off. It gives the appearance that the restaurant is trying to save money by cutting back on the size of the glass and proper mix for a drink. Please consider investing in Martini glasses and serving really nice cocktails."

  • "As New Brooklyn Cuisine veers dangerously towards being overplayed, I'm getting suspicious of any spot that smacks of that now familiar vibe. That said it still delivers creative dishes focused on local, craft ingredients and Rye is no exception. In fact Rye is a standout in the category. Be sure to visit Bar Below downstairs for great cocktails in a speakeasy environment. Great playlist the night we were there."

  • "Rye was fantastic, food was delicious and the drinks were good but the customer service was not great. We had a table of 10 that we asked to increase to 12 a few days before our reservation. We were told the max was 10 on a Friday or Saturday night, fine. We called the day of and they said they could accomodate the 12. I asked if I could bring our own dessert and the guy said no problem, but it's $3 per person. Again, perfectly fine. The day of, the dessert per head changed to $4 per person and we got scolded for having 12 at our table. I think the restaurant and hostesses need to get on the same page about what they can and can't offer or charge."

  • "We were a group of 8 - in Williamsburg for dinner before a show at Brooklyn Bowl. Everything about Rye was naturally good - its not trying too hard - all of the staff was very nice and our waiter professional and a pleasure. The food was great including presentation - ricotta ravioli and brussel sprouts were a big hit shared for the table...thanks Rye for a great evening!"

  • "My girlfriend and I came here this past Monday evening for dinner around 7:30 and had an absolutely fantastic time. We're both servers at Manhattan steakhouses and I've never felt compelled to write a review for a restaurant ever in my life until now. Coming from working in the industry, we loved every aspect of the restaurant. Our server was informative, not overbearing, and brought us everything we needed, never missed a single request. All of our dishes were spectacular, with a special shout out to the duck leg confit appetizer which far exceeded my expectations. I ordered a manhattan, to be made with Benedictine in the stead of vermouth, and it was made perfectly. All around, a perfect night out. Keep it up!"

  • "Waitstaff seem like they hate the world and they are annoyed that they have to wait on people. Just overall apathetic energy. Slow. VERY bright during brunch Food is always great. Donuts amazing. Great BLT."

  • "Rye was fantastic. I brought my parents for a special dinner on Sunday night and we were not disappointed. My father said that he actually preferred that meal to the one we had at Le Bernardin on Saturday."

  • "We had a very nice Sunday night dinner recently with our son, who lives in the neighborhood. Dark, cozy, early 20th century feel to the decor. As baby boomers, we were the oldest people there but felt comfortable and well taken care of among the 20- and 30-somethings. The pan-roasted skate was well-prepared; I don't often see it on menus, and it is tasty. Very good cocktails as well."

  • "Despite the rustic urban decor, smart looking people and above average food and drink, the meal was marred by strikingly poor service. Our good-looking waiter, outfitted in the w'burg uniform of beard, tie & waistcoat, impressed by taking the entire order from a group of seven without writing. What followed was a gap between appetizer and entree of more than 40 minutes without an acknowledgement and, when the entree's finally arrive, one is missing, leading to a wait of another ten minutes. My guess is he never put the order in correctly. NEXT TIME USE A PAD AND PENCIL AND PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR GUESTS!"

  • "The food as always was outstanding, an eclectic farm to table American fare that many restaurants try to emulate without the consistent success of Rye. The decor is gorgeous, almost as though you've stepped into an elegant inn from the 30's in upstate New York, while the wait staff goes the extra mile to make you feel at home and very welcome. There's also a new addition of a speak easy style bar downstairs, the perfect place for a night cap or a clandestine rendezvous. I give RYE the highest recommendation, an unpretentious jewel in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Williamsburg Brooklyn."

  • "Came here for my boyfriends birthday having only read recommendations on freewilliamsburg and loooked at the website. Very pleased and the menu was great for foodies and picky eaters alike! My only criticism would be that our two person table was behind a large pole and with our winter jackets and items crammed next to us we didn't have a ton of space but it made for extra romantic close setting. The drinks were great too I would come back just for the bar sometime!"

  • "Rye is always the perfect go-to for thoughtful food that always satisfies. We went with a large group and pre-ordered oysters, shrimp cocktail and Old Fashioneds to the table, and it was such a nice touch. Most of us either had the scallops and pork belly, or the Memphis ribs -- both excellent. We ordered brussels sprouts, and they were so good we ordered 4 helpings for the 8 of us. I could eat those brussels sprouts all day."

  • "We had a great brunch at Rye this past weekend with my family after thanksgiving. The meals were very reasonably priced and the food was excellent. The meatloaf sandwich was flavorful and juicy. The mac and cheese also was very good and all the breakfast options ordered were solid. Great place for a quick brunch at a reasonable price."

  • "This slightly hard to find restaurant was an absolute gem. Gorgeous food and good wine meant a great night for all of us. Only slight criticism, for a Sunday night the lighting was a little too dark and moody- was at times a struggle to read the menu!"

  • "The staff were lovely, the decor felt authentic, not pretentious and so pretty. The service was great, the food delicious and the drinks were so good, we had to have them twice. We were 5 for brunch, all had something different and all loved our choices. This was our first time here and chose it in part for its name and my love of all things rye, but more seriously on the other great reviews, which proved to be accurate. Loved it, would recommend it and will be back."
