My recent experience with the quality of the food at the downtown Chicago location was average - nothing spectacular, which I was used to. They love steak and Chicago has so many options. We chose Ruth's Chris and were not disappointed. In fact, our expectations were exceeded and our guests were delighted. Steaks were delicious! But it was the service that was over the top outstanding. We had a spill at our table and the staff quickly jumped into action - changed the cloth, reset the table and has us reseated in just moments. No embarrassment to the spiller.
We will make Ruth's Chris the "go to" steak restaurant for our special guests. Our party of three was seated promptly. Service was professional but friendly, and the server called me by name. The food is consistently good - dining at Ruth's Chris for many years in many cities, always very good. My entree was a surf and turf combo - filet w/small half lobster tail, a seared scallop and several grilled shrimp. The main attraction was perfectly cooked and so tender and moist, it melted like a snowflake on my tongue. The flavor of the meat was exceptional - maybe the garlic butter treatment?

My husband and I both had the special- for $53 dollars you get a soup or salad, steak, individual side and dessert. We both chose the smaller 12 oz ribeye (and it was nice and tender and marbled), mashed potatoes and we split a side of creamed spinach. Our friends got the salmon and the petite filet with shrimp, mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. My only warning is the petite filet special with shrimp is really small- but it does say it is only 6 oz on the menu and there is only like 3 shrimp that come with it. So I think our 1 friend should have gotten the ribeye. ;). Dessert was a chocolate cheesecake. Drinks were good and NOT watered down. When you want a flawless steak, Ruth's is still among the three best in Chicago. I care mainly about the food and service. My filet was perfect, as always, and the butter gives it so much flavor. The potatoes au gratin and steamed broccoli were great. The side salad was simple, which I prefer.
