Diner Reviews
  • "Kim, the hostess was very gracious & took us to a window seat. There were a couple large groups in that area, the noise level was so high, there was no way we were going to be able to talk with each other. Kim took us to the other side where there were many tables available (not a window seat) but had a good view & was much quieter. Jeanette was training Kelly & both were very attentive. The kitchen was slow getting our food out (large parties on the other side probably) and getting it right. Our calamari was not up to the norm - first time out, it was cooked & was greasy, so it went back. The second time out it was cooked a bit more & still a bit greasy, but better than the first. We will go back, as this is one of our favorite place"

  • "came here for our anniversary, although we wanted to sit out on the deck, there were no available tables. but the inside seating was just as nice because you can still see the beautiful view of newport beach. i don't remember our waitress's name but she was lovely. she and other servers checked on us constantly, always offering more champagne or asking how our food was. i had the french toast, which was not too bad, just a little too sweet for me. but other than that, the ambience was so beautiful, we will definitely be back!"

  • "Rusty Pelican is the best deal in town for a Sunday brunch! On the water, the food is delicious and the CHAMPAGNE is FREE with a brunch selection!!! Can't beat it!!! I'd give it 4 STARS!!!"

  • "I have always loved the Rusty Pelican's food and ambience. It has been a special place for me to go to treat myself and family. However the food was not as I expected this last visit. It was definitely good, but it wasn't as great as it has been. The calamari was not as I remember it, nor was the garlic bread as tasty as I recall. The tuna was very good, crab legs were great. The mashed potatoes used to have a special flavoring on them also. As always the service is the best!"

  • "I went here for a special dinner with my boyfriend, we arrived a bit early for the reservation and waited in the bar area until there was a table ready. The bar area had great views overlooking the harbor. The waiter was very friendly and personable and we had great service throughout the meal. The food was excellent we started with Oysters. I had the Chilean sea bass which was very good and the lemon caper butter it was topped with was sinfully delicious. Our table for dinner was overlooking the harbor and made for a very romantic meal."

  • "Our table had an amazing view of the Newport Bay, as did most in the restaurant. We soon found that we were paying for the view... the food was underwhelming. There are better seafood restaurants in the area that are comparably priced if not cheaper. Still, the view is spectacular and the food is good enough to go there every once and a while."

  • "Great food, great atmosphere. Superb service. The waitress did a wonderful job of describing the seafood specialties of the evening. I had the grilled salmon with red pepper sauce and fingerling potatoes with roasted carrots and asparagus. The salmon was moist, tasty, all together perfectly cooked. My wife had the ahi tuna with a substitution of green beans instead of rice, it was awesome!"

  • "The Rusty Pelican always has an amazing selection of fresh fish, great views and friendly servers. Make sure you make a reservation as it is always busy."

  • "From the time we sat down to the time we left everything was excellent- our server"J" was outstanding from making great suggestions on food and wine to taking our group photo when we left. Of course the garlic bread is amazing but the main course fish dishes were tremendous as well. The desserts finished off a wonderful evening"

  • "Another great celebration dinner at The Rusty Pelican, it's been a favorite for over 30 years! We'll be back."

  • "Last time we were at a Rusty Pelican was when it was a chain, and that was over 25 years ago. The menu is varied and the food is exquisite. If you are not a seafood lover, they have great choices for beef or chicken. Also the garlic bread is a must-try, and you can actually find clams in the clam chowder (big ones too!). I give the ambience a 3 because the tables are too close together. You can hear conversations quite easily at the next table without trying. Everyone wants a window view, but the number of tables makes it uncomfortable to have a private conversation during dinner. Go there for the food...you won't be disappointed."

  • "Father's day brunch was busy, reservations required, our table was ready, always great food, servers were understandably busy."

  • "The brunch came with bottomless champagne and the service by Dino was outstanding. The brunch menu was varied and included fresh sourdough bread, poppyseed bread, and fruit. Outdoor dining is limited in space but worth it."

  • "We go to Rusty Pelican often and love it. Justin is a great server. Notable food items are the garlic bread, crab cakes, and flour less chocolate cake. The seafood is always fresh and cooked perfectly."

  • "We found ourselves in Newport for Fathers Day and wanted something that would suit our family of 5. We were lucky enough to sit on the deck and enjoy the beautiful day watching boaters drive by. When we went to leave we realized just how busy the restaurant was, on the deck we forgot that we were actually at a busy restaurant. My husband and I enjoyed our meals as for the kids they had the typical children's restaurant meals to choose from."

  • "We took my sister and husband there for their 20th wedding anniversary. We all had a different entre and found everything good."

  • "Great service. Pricey food. Great view. Easy to make online reservation. It was our 22nd anniversary and they knew and both the hostess and server mentioned it, but nothing done with it...thought that was a bit of a let down. Seems like they should do something even if its just a bowl of ice cream, two spoons, and a candle. If we are going to drop $100.00 on two meals, it seems like that would be something that should be automatic."

  • "Went to RP with a business colleague while in OC for meetings. He is a big fan of seafood and is from out of the area so I took him to my favorite place for seafood and service. We were seated upon arrival and had excellent service from the servers. Always be sure to get the garlic bread when you go here. Best ever. RP has been around since I was a small child, where my parents always went for special occasions. Beautiful view of the harbor and great outdoor seating as well."

  • "Fish was dry and over cooked. Restaurant has great view of harbor . Staff is friendly and service is always good. Had to wait thirty minutes, even with our reservation. Found noise level very high."

  • "I took my 87-year-old mother here for her birthday, and it was great. We went early, before the noise level was prohibitive, and the staff was kind and accommodating, storing her walker for us and even bringing an unexpected dessert with a candle. Food was delicious--Mom said it was the best steak she ever had. Wouldn't hesitate to return."

  • "Always a great restaurant. My husband and I started going to Rusty Peligan in the mid seventies, while dating. We just celebrated our 38th anniversary. It's our go to special restaurant for celebrating special occasions."

  • "Normally, Rusty Pelican is our favorite, but Wednesday night we were surrounded by large loud parties. We had a guest and we just could not talk it was so noisy. We tried to get our table moved, but they could not do it. The food was great, as usual, but we were embarassed by the horrible noise."

  • "We have been to Rusty Pelican many times but this time was a major disappointment, there were 5 of us and no one enjoyed there brunch, scrambled eggs were dry, chicken picata was dry, we had to send our crab cakes back twice because they were still cold inside, not a good experience at all, our server was very good though."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "We go here often to dine outside on the deck, with the harbor view and quiet atmosphere. Very relaxing. My only suggestion is to add to the menu for brunch, we don't usually eat fish then, but maybe at least one entree like waffles or French toast?"

  • "Enjoyed meal and waitress was very attentive until the end where we asked her to take a photo of our family and she mentioned that she was really busy and she would try to ask someone else. She never did! We had to ask another waiter. Really spoiled the meal with lack of customer service."

  • "What? RP making a mistake? Wow my wife and I had a date night away from the kids and we go to one of our favorite waterfront? Rusty P always delivers great hot food. Tonight they delivered food that must have been sitting out for a while because my meat was warm not hot? We did not have time to send back because we were heading over to Big Newport for a movie but I did mention to our waiter? Hope this was not a sign of something different going on here because I also read another review regarding the same problem."

  • "Even with a reservation it was a little slow seating us. Hostess seamed a little scattered and a little unfriendly. Once seated, the waiter was awesome making suggestions and providing very good descriptions. Food was very good as was the wine."

  • "Having taken my clients to the Rusty Pelican on many occasions for lunch during weekdays, I felt comfortable bringing new clients to the restaurant yesterday (Sunday) for brunch. The clients drove up from Carlsbad and I drove down from Palos Verdes (a one plus hour drive for each of us). Our server was great; however, when the food arrived, not only was it cold, the ordered side dishes (asparagus and garlic bread) were served as an after thought - ten minutes later! No excuse for either!"

  • "We drove down from Sacramento to meet friends for dinner and arrived an hour before our reservation but our hostess gaciously found us a table to enjoy some drinks before dinner - six of us ate and each was delighted with their meal - great service also - will definitely visit again when in the area."

  • "they were busy but we got a nice table against the window. We sat and under the tablecloth was an old sugar packet presumably from the last guests. It took over 10 minutes to have the server come by, a cordial server but a bit inattentive with waters running out and long waits for service. The bread plate for our guest had a butter smear on it and yet we hadn't had anything yet. The server poured four glasses of water and there was black speckles floating in them all. Food was good when it arrived, the bread dish had a nice selection of savory and sweet, the hue so rancheros was tasty but the eggs over cooked. Overall just okay...nothing special and other than a brief apology for the recurring issues nothing else was said or done."

  • "Sat upstairs in the bar; great service; full menu; discounts on a few appetizers and drinks. Highlights: Salty Pear Martini - sinfully delicious - not overly sweet; salted rim was a surprisingly good compliment. Coconut shrimp; goat cheese flat bread were good. I had the mahi mahi served over sautéed tomatoes and spinach - it was good but not great. Friend had king crab legs which she said were delicious. We had dessert that was also really delicious (chocolate lava cake with ice cream). Nice view of the boats in the harbor. No sunset view because it's a south facing part of the coastline. "
