Diner Reviews
  • "Our table was bay-front with a spectacular view. Matt, our server, recommended the garlic toast starter and Mahi-Mahi plate served over jasmine rice. My friend requested that instead of rice, would it be possible to substitute pasta? With an affirmative reply from Matt, we both went for the Mahi. What arrived was a beaufiful slab of Mahi-Mahi over a bed of angel-hair pasta, covered with a shrimp/garlic herb sauce. Matt said they had never served the Mahi that way, but the staff was impressed with the result. They asked if he would like to name the dish; so he named it alfter himself: The "Franklin". It was incredible. By the way, the garlic toast was great as well. Next time you stop by the Rusty Pelican, ask for a "Franklin" special."

  • "We love this restaurant! The food, the view and servers are the BEST. But..... they took my favorite dessert off the menu. PLEASE TELL THEM TO PUT THE BAKED ALASKAS back on the menu. We have only eaten there a few times since they took it off the menu. We were eating there once a week...now only once a month :( The only reason I didn't give five stars for the overall dining experience was there was no baked Alaska to finish it off."

  • "I was driving around on a Sunday lafe afternonn with my husband and kids and decided at the last minute to go to dinner. This place would be ideal for adults but it was okay for kids too. We sat indoors and we're placed near a family with a baby and young child. It was a great dinner abd service abd had we made reservations earlier we could probably had more sitting g options. Overakl, I highly recommend."

  • "We took my sister-in-law to lunch for her birthday. Kim, the hostess, was as sweet as she always is. Our server today was Mariane Z. We waited for our drinks & to order our lunch. The food was delivered by another server, but Mariane didn't stop by to see if "everything" was alright. In fact "everything" was not. We had to flag her down for "everything". My husband asked her to bring his soup when he was finished with his salad, so the soup wouldn't sit & get cold. She delivered his soup before he was finished with his salad & she said "I thought you were done" & put it on the table & left. There were other issues with her, but I can say, the service we got today was not the norm!"

  • "We were given a table at the windows with a view of Newport Harbor. It was a full house, so the kitchen and bar were backed up with orders. The opportunity to watch the harbor activity and visit was so pleasant we didn't mind. The garlic bread was outstanding (watch for the drips), and the orange & ginger glazed Mahi Mahi was indeed spicy. It was delightfully presented, cooked to perfection, served on rice with most of the glaze surrounding the rice. This allows as much of the glaze to be added to the fish as one would like. The chocolate torte was rich, moist, falvorful and steaming when cut into at the bottom of the bowl. Surprising that the ice cream on top did not melt immediately, but it stayed firm until the last bite."

  • "Food, drinks & service all top-drawer. A really special feel, like the controls on a luxury automobile. Spectacular wait staff and customer pulchritude. One gets the idea that this is where you bring Miss February to dine, whether she is last month's or you've been married to her from 1967. Quite spendy but worth every dime."

  • "We had great seafood. Well prepared and cooked just right. Sat at a table with an awesome view of the water. Would go back again!"

  • "We've eaten at Rusty Pelican many times and stopped for an early dinner (3 of us). We ordered the garlic bread which was amazing, and then a caesar salad which was served quickly while we waited about 15 more minutes for my husband's appetizer. Finally his came. Obviously there was some problem with the order (the waiter didn't check back promptly enough) Then entrees were served. The $35 special was halibut - we had two of those and I had the ahi. I believe that the entree's were ready but held because of the delay on the appetizer and therefore the ahi was completely dried out; the special halibut was anything but because it was barely at room temperature. The waiter never returned to check on the food so we suffered through it."

  • "I took my wife and 2 daughters to dinner here. We made reservations, which means we got to sit upstairs, near the window. The girls were amazed on the views we had from dinner. We were taking pictures like we were tourist's at some place in Paris , France. The service was outstanding, our waitress was very attentive to our needs, and gave us some great Recommendations! You have to try the Garlic Bread! Yummy. After dinner we had desert, which hit the spot after a great Halibut dinner! We then took a little stroll along the boardwalk, took a look at some boats, and then headed back to our truck to proceed down to the beach for a night walk along the beach in Newport."

  • "We didn't get our waiter, he handed us to someone else, no refills on our water, they didn't really seem to care we were there. They didn't really seem apologetic either. Food was good but over price. You basically go there for the scenery"

  • "With great reviews from local friends, it was time to give Rusty Pelican a second chance. Sad to say, the third time will not be a charm, since we will not be returning. Service was nothing aside from par, the waiter couldn't recall orders, confused the drinks, forgot to bring the soup, and failed to give us out "to go" bag. The food was nothing that couldn't be ordered elsewhere for 50 percent less in cost. Our table was bumped into constantly by other diners as well as staff. Not terrible, not good, not going back."

  • "I haven't been to Rusty Pelican in years. I'm not sure why, but I'm glad we went last weekend. The bar service was only "okay". But, once downstairs for dinner, we had an EXCELLENT experience. Our server, Michelle was outstanding. She recommended the sockeye salmon, which turned out to be some of the best fish I have had in a long time. The chef is extremely flexible with preparation - a nice touch! All of the food was excellent. Their calamari is different, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The garlic bread was fantastic. The drinks were excellent. It was a bit noisy and crowded, but that was to be expected for a "beach" restaurant. The atmosphere and ambiance is great. We will be back soon!"

  • "I ordered an Arnold Palmer but when I asked for a refill they said they have to charge again. We ate at the Chart House the next night and they gave me all the refills I wanted without charge. The my daughter and I ordered the prime rib. I ordered the larger one. When they bought the plates out my daughters looked like the bigger one so we asked the server about it. She took my daughter's plate back and said let me ask the chef which one is which. She came back with my daughter's plate back with a portion of the steak cut off and then just took off. And my wife and my other daughter ordered fish and received very small portions. The Chart House was a way better experience."

  • "Kim, the hostess was very gracious & took us to a window seat. There were a couple large groups in that area, the noise level was so high, there was no way we were going to be able to talk with each other. Kim took us to the other side where there were many tables available (not a window seat) but had a good view & was much quieter. Jeanette was training Kelly & both were very attentive. The kitchen was slow getting our food out (large parties on the other side probably) and getting it right. Our calamari was not up to the norm - first time out, it was cooked & was greasy, so it went back. The second time out it was cooked a bit more & still a bit greasy, but better than the first. We will go back, as this is one of our favorite place"

  • "Outdoor deck dining was fun, though a bit breezy when we first sat down (had to hold onto the menus tightly!) It did calm down quite a bit after 15 minutes. Got to see sailboats racing in harbor in quite windy condition, very exciting. The seafood was fresh and well-prepared. The chef hand-fillets the fish each day, and you can choose any sauce from the menu to use on the catch of the day (luckily ours was halibut.) We took a quick peek into the upstairs bar on the way out- it was quite a happening scene with live music and lots of happy patrons (this was a Thursday night.)"

  • "A Trip Advisor top recommendation, which lives up to its rep, great food and a fantastic location overlooking the marina, we were fortunate in having a window table at sunset. Service excellent (Nick), he was very patient in explaining the menu to a couple of Brits (some American menus are almost another language to us lol!). Really enjoyed the Mahi Mahi. Altogether a really memorable experience"

  • "Our table had an amazing view of the Newport Bay, as did most in the restaurant. We soon found that we were paying for the view... the food was underwhelming. There are better seafood restaurants in the area that are comparably priced if not cheaper. Still, the view is spectacular and the food is good enough to go there every once and a while."

  • "Rusty Pelican is the best deal in town for a Sunday brunch! On the water, the food is delicious and the CHAMPAGNE is FREE with a brunch selection!!! Can't beat it!!! I'd give it 4 STARS!!!"

  • "came here for our anniversary, although we wanted to sit out on the deck, there were no available tables. but the inside seating was just as nice because you can still see the beautiful view of newport beach. i don't remember our waitress's name but she was lovely. she and other servers checked on us constantly, always offering more champagne or asking how our food was. i had the french toast, which was not too bad, just a little too sweet for me. but other than that, the ambience was so beautiful, we will definitely be back!"

  • "I went here for a special dinner with my boyfriend, we arrived a bit early for the reservation and waited in the bar area until there was a table ready. The bar area had great views overlooking the harbor. The waiter was very friendly and personable and we had great service throughout the meal. The food was excellent we started with Oysters. I had the Chilean sea bass which was very good and the lemon caper butter it was topped with was sinfully delicious. Our table for dinner was overlooking the harbor and made for a very romantic meal."

  • "I have always loved the Rusty Pelican's food and ambience. It has been a special place for me to go to treat myself and family. However the food was not as I expected this last visit. It was definitely good, but it wasn't as great as it has been. The calamari was not as I remember it, nor was the garlic bread as tasty as I recall. The tuna was very good, crab legs were great. The mashed potatoes used to have a special flavoring on them also. As always the service is the best!"

  • "Great food, great atmosphere. Superb service. The waitress did a wonderful job of describing the seafood specialties of the evening. I had the grilled salmon with red pepper sauce and fingerling potatoes with roasted carrots and asparagus. The salmon was moist, tasty, all together perfectly cooked. My wife had the ahi tuna with a substitution of green beans instead of rice, it was awesome!"

  • "From the time we sat down to the time we left everything was excellent- our server"J" was outstanding from making great suggestions on food and wine to taking our group photo when we left. Of course the garlic bread is amazing but the main course fish dishes were tremendous as well. The desserts finished off a wonderful evening"

  • "Last time we were at a Rusty Pelican was when it was a chain, and that was over 25 years ago. The menu is varied and the food is exquisite. If you are not a seafood lover, they have great choices for beef or chicken. Also the garlic bread is a must-try, and you can actually find clams in the clam chowder (big ones too!). I give the ambience a 3 because the tables are too close together. You can hear conversations quite easily at the next table without trying. Everyone wants a window view, but the number of tables makes it uncomfortable to have a private conversation during dinner. Go there for the food...you won't be disappointed."

  • "Great service. Pricey food. Great view. Easy to make online reservation. It was our 22nd anniversary and they knew and both the hostess and server mentioned it, but nothing done with it...thought that was a bit of a let down. Seems like they should do something even if its just a bowl of ice cream, two spoons, and a candle. If we are going to drop $100.00 on two meals, it seems like that would be something that should be automatic."

  • "I took my 87-year-old mother here for her birthday, and it was great. We went early, before the noise level was prohibitive, and the staff was kind and accommodating, storing her walker for us and even bringing an unexpected dessert with a candle. Food was delicious--Mom said it was the best steak she ever had. Wouldn't hesitate to return."

  • "Normally, Rusty Pelican is our favorite, but Wednesday night we were surrounded by large loud parties. We had a guest and we just could not talk it was so noisy. We tried to get our table moved, but they could not do it. The food was great, as usual, but we were embarassed by the horrible noise."

  • "Went to RP with a business colleague while in OC for meetings. He is a big fan of seafood and is from out of the area so I took him to my favorite place for seafood and service. We were seated upon arrival and had excellent service from the servers. Always be sure to get the garlic bread when you go here. Best ever. RP has been around since I was a small child, where my parents always went for special occasions. Beautiful view of the harbor and great outdoor seating as well."

  • "We found ourselves in Newport for Fathers Day and wanted something that would suit our family of 5. We were lucky enough to sit on the deck and enjoy the beautiful day watching boaters drive by. When we went to leave we realized just how busy the restaurant was, on the deck we forgot that we were actually at a busy restaurant. My husband and I enjoyed our meals as for the kids they had the typical children's restaurant meals to choose from."
