Diner Reviews
  • "This is our fourth time to eat at the Rustic Tavern and we enjoyed it this time, too. The staff is friendly and helpful and the food is excellent. We're becoming regulars - especially for the roasted vegetable sandwich - a true treasure!"

  • "Our first time here for a birthday celebration. Our server Sandy was attentive. There was no problem splitting dishes. Excellent arugala salad and tasty brussels sprouts with bacon. The pumpkin fries are battered and fried and were quite greasy. This didn't stop us from polishing them off. Also tried the chocolate creme brulee. The chocolate was smooth and delicious, the brulee was a little thick and a little more bruleed than we'd have liked - also finished off. Excellent red wine suggestion and that was dinner."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised by our dinner here. The fried pumpkin sticks were something I had not seen on any other menu, and they were delicious. Both of our salads (beet and caesar) were very good, pairing a bacon viniagrette with beets works really well. Our short rib entree and side of brussel sprouts were also delicious. Highly recommend the chocolate creme brulee for dessert, it was dreamy. The presence of two large televisions over the bar was a bit distracting, but I guess if it's called a "tavern," then tvs are allowed. The service was friendly and attentive. It made for a very nice date night out."

  • "Charming personable environment. Well hosted by the genial owner/chef and his wife. Excellent organic choices. Butternut squash soup , cream -free, was the soup of the day justifiably extolled by all. Good food choices for thoughtful dining. Friendly staff and good service. Apparently my car was blocking another vehicle in the parking lot. The waiter came to me , requested my keys and moved my car. Prices reasonable."

  • "My two siblings and their spouses had a great dinner at Rustic last Friday. We started with the mussels and salmon apps which were outstanding. My wife and I each had the grass fed steak which was really flavorful. We had the Sangiovese (sp?) wine that was on the list and found it to be a great value. The service was great. We live in the neighborhood and have lots of choices in Lafayette and this restaurant keeps getting better. Thanx for a nice evening"

  • "Food and service very good. Will not eat inside again. It is a veritable din because of all the hard surfaces. Makes that ourdoor seating area look mighty attractive..."

  • "I will preface this review saying, that I had a strong drink prior at Cooperage. In other words, I was in an Excellent mood! Loved the Kale salad and Mussels! Had the salmon and chocolate cream brulee for desert. We split everything so we could try more and not roll out of the restaurant. The server offered and was gracious about this and gave awesome service! Going to lunch with friends next week. Hopefully this will become my go to restaurant for fine dining that's on the healthier side!"

  • "We enjoyed both the food, and the service. I had the sole and each bite was a little bit different with the nice vegetables and rice with it. We had Sandy for our waiter and would request him next time he was so accommodating and pleasant. We will return soon."

  • "My wife and I have had many very good meals at the Rustic Tavern in Lafayette, CA. We invited some good frineds to join us last Sunday, Mar. 9th for dinner. We sat outside and enjoyed the ambiance and attentive staff. The salads were perfect. But the entrees, all four of them came out of the kitchen overcooked. My wife's pork chop was so tough she could not cut it. My NY Steak, ordered med-rare was well done. The other pork chop and salmon were similarly overcooked. We were puzzled since it was not a busy night. The staff made amends on the bill, which was appreciated. But it would have been better if the meals were properly prepared."

  • "I have been there 3 times in 2 weeks. Each dish ordered has been excellent. Small menu, but still hard to chose from such interesting and well prepared dishes. Great service. Not sure why many write ups complain about the noise level. It is not a quiet restaurant, but it is not too noisy to enjoy conversation."

  • "This was our second visit to Rustic Tavern - Because the first time was so good! We're going to make it a regular weekly visit! First time my husband had the hamburger and the fish and chips the second time. Each was perfect. Both visits I had the roasted vegetable sandwich and will most probably have it again and again! It is perfect. Only hitch was that they ran out of vegetables (I can understand why) and so had to roast a new batch which made a long delay for us getting our food. It was worth it!"

  • "I've been her several times and that's some indication of satisfaction. They've added daily specials to their menu service. We had a reservation for 8 recently, all dinners were served at the same time....may not sound important but it is."

  • "We really enjoyed the cocktails and food at Rustic Tavern. We had a seasonal sidecar, and manhattan. It's nice to see another place with an interesting, creative, seasonal and quality cocktail list. As apps my wife had the delicious caesar salad, and I had the PEI mussels, which came in a kind of tomato, parsley, and onion broth that was excellent. Sadly the dish was only served with one small piece of toast, and I had to ask for more bread to enjoy the broth. We had the steelhead and sole (special) as mains, and both dishes were wonderfully prepared - and well portioned. Great food, although the dishes would be better with less salt. Most significant shortcoming is the "rustic" decor: just some old boards as wall siding - that's IT."

  • "This was our first time eating at Rustic Tavern. It is excellent. My husband had the hamburger. He is very particular about the way his hamburger is cooked and this burger was "perfectly cooked" to his satisfaction. I had the roasted vegetable sandwich and it was delicious. The greens (salad) that was served with it had the lightest tastiest dressing on it! We definitely will return again and again. Parking is a little difficult at lunch time so go earlier than your reservation as you might have to drive around the block a couple of times until someone leaves a space. It's worth it!"

  • "The staff is very friendly and the food is simple, but very good. I was expecting a more interesting menu, but it is pretty much typical of so many lunch menus. Very noisy, so ask for a corner table or sit outside to have a real conversation. We had the Caesar Salad with a piece of salmon which was very good, but I was taking a friend to celebrate her birthday and wanted something special. But, the space is bright and cheerful and the people are very nice. Parking is impossible at noon time."

  • "We went with a lively bunch of friends for Sunday dinner. We had a nice table in the center of the dining room with fresh flowers on the table, so nice. We all enjoyed our dinners including the Nightly specials. Our server was great, and a quick wit, great sense of humor! He was just perfect for our buzzing party. The Mason Jar cheesecake is a must try! and the wine list is also really approachable. We love this place and are glad to have another option in Lafayette!"

  • "Granted - this restaurant came highly recommended by a friend so I had very high expectations, unfortunately I left disappointed. The food was good, service was spotty good, neither was not great. Our table was very close to the door so we felt exposed for the entire meal and cold whenever the door opened. Also, the acoustics are such that I heard every word being said at the table behind us but not what my partner was saying. One thing I found strange - they have bread plates (taking up valuable table space) but never brought bread, guess it's by request only."

  • "I have dined here several times, and always come away remarking how fresh the quality ingredients were, prepared with crisp flavors and very appetizing recipes creating dishes that are simply delicious! Healthy, tasty, beautifully presented."

  • "We made our first visit to Rustic Tavern on Saturday night. I have to say, the food and the service were fantastic! There were four of us in our group. I had a warm duck breast salad as an appetizer and my husband had smoked salmon. Two of the most delicious things I have ever tasted. I had the fettucine entree and he had scallops. Again, both were great. All four of us licked our plates clean. We shared one dessert, which was plenty at that point. What a gem of a restaurant. We'll be back."

  • "We had a very nice meal at Rustic Tavern. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was excellent and I really liked that they actually give you a decent serving of sides with your meal--the sides were very tasty and did not feel like an afterthought in terms of both attention given to them and the amount. The value seemed very good. The food isn't cheap, but the quality of ingredients and thought put into the preparation made us feel like it was well worth the cost. We were there rather early and the place was filling up, but we did not experience the problem with noise that other dinners have commented on. We will be back."

  • "Rustic Tavern offers really good food in a comfortable atmosphere. We ordered the steak and salmon entrees and both were excellent. The chocolate creme brulee dessert was outstanding. I did notice some guests bring their own wine, and I think I know why. I got the impression the wine list was compiled by someone who doesn't care so much about wine. But overall, this was our first visit and we will definitely be going back for more, next time with our own bottle."

  • "We enjoyed all the food items, from duck hash to cider brussels sprouts, but the service was slow and not very attentive. This would have been ok if it was crowded, but the place was only sparsely packed. Everyone was friendly enough, I would just like a little more pep in their step. The bloody marys took awhile to get, but with pickled veggies were worth the wait."

  • "We recently celebrated my husband's "big" birthday at Rustic Tavern; 8 of us in all. The food was to die for. So fresh and inventive, from the smoked salmon appetizers to the smoke jerked chicken and the roasted brussel sprouts to the blueberry cheesecake and more, it was all delicious. The wait staff was awesome, very attentive but not pushy. The chef and his wife were awesome, came out to talk to us. A very cozy restaurant and very full for a Tuesday night. I couldn't have asked for a more special birthday dinner for hubby. We have been here a few times and it did not disappoint us, once again."

  • "I only have one complaint - THE NOISE LEVEL!!! I took my mother here for a birthday lunch and, sadly, we couldn't hold a conversation. The acoustics are horrible. The food and service were above average, and the prices were competitive, but the fact that we couldn't hear ourselves talk was a big turn-off."

  • "Finally I believe the Rustic Tavern might be here to stay. 3 other restaurants have opened and closed in this location. I have tried each one but by far this is a far superior cuisine and is offset by daily specials too. The pulled pork sandwich on a very dense bun was a wonderful choice as they pile the pork on with a side of cole slaw and a very different type of "french fry" I do want to go back and try their dinners. If they are anything like their lunch then I will put this on my list of favorites."

  • "Rustic tavern is a very cool looking restaurant. OUr waiter, Sandy, was very funny. Food was delicious. Our table had petrale sole, chickent and salmon - all would re-order. dont miss the bread pudding for dessert."

  • "Very good food, the waiter was wonderful, humorous, friendly and helpful. Wine list is mediocre and noise level was very loud, hard to hold a conversation, but definitely worth it for the good food."

  • "Have eaten here twice for lunch - outside table sunny day, and once for dinner - inside with small group of friends --- Food has been consistently good, fresh flavors. At lunch -- a wide variety for palate and budget. At dinner -- delicious fresh choices - I loved the fettucine, table mates tried the fish special and crab mac n cheese - everyone really liked their dishes. I would return for lunch -- inside at night the noise level is energetic, but too noisy for quiet conversation. Dinner was more expensive, with no budget choices like fish sandwich or burger. Appreciated that kitchen was flexible and accommodating with food allergies."

  • "My second lunch here was a disappointment A large loud party made it so noisey we couldn't here ourselves or the waiter with his thick accent"

  • "We have been going to restaurants in this location for over 20 years. The most recent change of ownership has brought a nice, but simple face lift to a familiar venue. The prices, as always, have increased. Expect to drop $100 on an average date night, and don't be surprised if the place is filled with a majority of those 50 and older."

  • "I had the New York steak which was exquisite. I subbed in roasted Brussels sprouts in lieu of the normal potatoes which was an excellent choice. My only gripe is that they seated the two of us at a really small two person table (despite the restaurant being dead) and it was so small we barely had room for drinks and extra plates. This is very minor however...all the important boxes are checked!"

  • "We've been here twice and on both occasions there is a consistency in food. Whereas the menu was stale and limited they now have added several daily additions."

  • "We were four ladies gathering after a couple of years absence. We looked forward to chatting. Next to us were five ladies apparently doing the same thing but they were in their 30's and we were two decades older. They were VERY LOUD! It might not have been so bad BUT the table against the wall are jammed together. It felt like we were a table of nine. Too bad! We will not return"

  • "Have had lunch and dinner several times here and never been disappointed. Food is always fresh including a surprise element such as pomegranate seeds in the salmon and nectarines in the sole dish. R.T. has always been filled to the brim with diners which accounts for the noise level, ergo, not a place for an intimate rendezvous. Have yet to try their brunch. Servers are pleasant and accommodating."
