Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant was recommend to me by a friend. I wanted a Farm to Table Restaurant in Chicago. We got an excellent Farm to Table Restaurant, specializing in American food with a French twist. The quality was amazing. Everything was delicious. The incredible pluses for the restaurant include the rotisserie oven and the incredible mix drinks. The decor was fun and open. The wait staff was extremely attentive and knowledgeable. It was easy to get to by bus. I would like to come back the next time I am in town."

  • "We went to Rustic House because we had heard good things, and it exceeded our expectations. The cocktails were great, we had wonderful waiter, and the food was well prepared, creative and delicious. Our entrées included scallops, duck, and pork each was cooked beautifully. Thanks for the great experience."

  • "We went to Rustic House when it first opened. Good but not great. Now we think it's great...food, service, ambience...all excellent. Highly recommend! Now one of our fav places in Lincoln Park."

  • "Great food and atmosphere! Everything that we had was delicious! The waitress was very patient with us answering all of our questions and making great recommendations. I had the veal and my significant other had the lamb both were great, I look forward to my next trip to rustic house."

  • "Excellent neighborhood restaurant. Quaint and flawlessly executed. Everything was very well prepared; each plate could have been staged by a food stylist for a print ad. I cannot speak highly enough!"

  • "This was our first visit to Rustic House, but definitely not the last. The food and service were terrific."

  • "A small gem that seems to be a favorite of the locals. Menu is varied and eclectic. Sides were all delicious and of surprisingly large serving size, as were the entrees. Small, quiet and dark. Rustic House maybe seats 40 people, max, unless there is a secret room in the back. This place provided a nice break from Chicago's hectic, loud and bustling "popular" restaurant scene."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 42nd anivesary in style. The meal started off with a complimentary glass of champaigne for the special occasion ( nice touch) and continued on to be one of the best meals that we have had in a long time. My salmon chop was simply outstanding with a generous portion and awesome flavor. My wife's meal was outstanding as well. The night ended with a excellent desert. I would recommend this restuarant for any occasion, special or casual."

  • "We had not been for a while because of a not so good experience. This visit, however, was like the opening days experience. Staff was great. Food was even better. Tables are a little cramped I though."

  • "We went during chef's week as Rustic House had the best menu by far. We had the hangar steak for an entree and the only criticism was it was a bit tough, yet it was very flavorful. Service was great."

  • "I've been scoping this place out for a while but I'm happy to have checked this place off on my list! He ordered the lobster bisque (smooth, rich and good lobster flavor), scallops and risotto (he's not a big fan of truffles, but the black truffle taste was quite slight and the risotto was rich and creamy). I ordered the chicken liver mousse (creamy and sweet) and the rack of lamb (mushrooms and green beans had a nice smoky/char flavor, lamb was a good medium rare.) My glass of Sancerre was disappointing, but that was probably the only thing I disliked! My overall experience was very comparable to Balena which I liked very much as well. I only wish it was closer so I could come back for their daily pre-fixe dinners!"

  • "The four of us each ordered something different. All of us were very pleased with our meals."

  • "Four of us enjoyed a variety of plates and starters including suckling pig, duck and sea bass. All were excellent and the rotisserie duck was one of the best I have had ever. Sitting by the rotisserie was a nice way to warm up on the cold early March evening. The mixed drink were well prepared and all portions were good sized. Services was god without overbearing. The decor is upscale rustic - think wood planks highly polished and lantern and candle lights. Will definitely return."

  • "Food did not live up to the outstanding reviews online. Was in town for business and took clients here, but it was definitely not work the long trip from my downtown hotel."

  • "What a place! My wife and I went here for Valentines day, and I don't have a single complaint. We had the Au Poivre, Duck l'Orange, an absolutely fantastic caramelized corn brulee, and two very nice cocktails. Perfect for a date night or small group, this place is small but has a lot of atmosphere. I had a great time and will return!"

  • "My wife and I had dinner this past Sunday evening at Rustic House. The restaurant was not busy, so we had our choice of tables and proceeded to dine in peaceful quietude. We started the evening with a delicious creamy soup and an arugula salad with pear slices. For entrees, we had the swordfish chop and a special for that evening, roast cod. Both of the starters and both of the entrees were quite delicious. The swordfish dish was the best swordfish that I have ever had. The dishes were enhanced by the wine we chose, a roussanne from DeLille Cellars, one of my favorite Washington state wineries. This was our third visit to Rustic House, and we have enjoyed each one. We will be back."

  • "I was surprised by the size of Rustic House and the layout. We sat in the room towards the back and it was quiet, romantic and relaxing. However, I noticed when leaving, that the front area of the restaurant was a little louder, lively. Most likely this was due to the bar being in the front too. Loved the ambiance and the warmness of the decor. It was simple and elegant. Noticed that some early diners brought a little one and for early evening dining, I think this place would be ok for kids. Probably not during main dining hours (7pm or later). The food was savory and unique. I had the scallops and they were tender and balanced out nicely with the black truffle. My husband had the special suckling pig and he ate every last bite."

  • "Been to Rustic House two times prior, had great experiences. Our third visit was our last to Rustic House. Will definitely not recommend to anyone. Two of us ordered the swordfish and three ordered the flat iron steak, all ordered cesear salad. The restaurant was not busy, possibly 6 tables sat. Salads used old lettuce, brown and wilted. Corn Brulee, potatoes, and brussel sprouts, highlight of the meal. Swordfish had bones in the fish; mine came out in three pieces, two pieces were cooked very well, the third was basically sushi. Completely raw. The sauce on the fish was nice. Flat Iron steaks were tough and lacked anything special. Service was rushed, five of us with salads and one round of drinks were in and out in around 45 minutes."

  • "This was our second time and we loved our first experience so we brought a group of 6 for our Son's birthday. We were not so thrilled! The salmon was buttery and the two that ordered it did not eat much. The chicken was also buttery. My son had the lamb and seemed to like that although the green beans were awful. They never even acknowledged the birthday. All in all it was a disappointing meal!"

  • "It's a new restaurant and the staff and the kitchen seemed totally overwhelmed on a cold Tuesday night in late February. I would recommend giving them a couple of more months to get settled in before trying the place."

  • "Rustic House is easy to reach via train (Brown line) or bus (#8 Halsted). We sat in the back which was a bit more quiet than the front area. The service here was friendly, engaging, attentive but not overbearing during our visit. The dishes we had were a shared started of Gnocchi with Foie Gras that was wonderful. Use the bread to dip up the sauce that comes with the Gnocchi. For the main I had the Jumbo Scallops and my wife had the Duck L'Orange. Both were exceptional and big enough to share multiple bites. For dessert we ordered the mascarpone cheesecake was so good. Beer selection was average with a couple local beers with a mix of belgians and stouts right now."

  • "Food was fabulous. I had the Scallops which were beyond delicious. It was that kind of "stop and savor every bite" kind of meal. My husband had the Prime Rib special which was equally delicious. Wonderful roasted brussel sprouts for a side. Scrumptious Peanut Butter Blondie for dessert. Service was great Will plan to go again to this wonderful spot!"

  • "we had a nice time. restaurant is tiny, really no good tables. house cocktails good (shirley templeton and rustic nail). wood grilled octopus great; grilled oysters meager. chicken liver mousse kind of sweet and liquid. short rib special very deep and syrupy. mussels tangy. dishes actually could have used more salt. we enjoyed the crème brulee trio. service started out good but became hard to find and not solicitous as evening got busier. my wife could not get over $22 for a roasted half chicken! Ha!"

  • "Rustic House is one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago - its food and excellent service never disappoints. The absolutely best mussels anywhere -worth the trip alone. Swordfish is amazing - perfectly seasoned and prepared. Love the chicken pot pie and wood roasted oysters also. Service is personal, helpful and friendly but not obtrusive. Relatively small space, so most nights reservations are a must. Only one complaint - no valet parking on Sundays; and with all of the snow, it can be difficult to find nearby parking."

  • "The name Rustic House is spot on here. You get walls covered in reclaimed lumber in both the front and rear dining room, the latter also having a fireplace that creates a very warm and comfortable environment. The menu feels like a "Best Of" list, as though someone asked everyone in America what is your favorite gourmet comfort food. From a three hour cured Salmon that was moist and full of flavor, to the Maple Duck, to the Chicken Pot Pie, everyone at the table had praise for their main course. The Lobster Bisque was rich without being overpowering, and the Spinach Salad with the poached egg was great. Definitely a place you can eat at more than once due to the variety of options on the menu."

  • "First time here although we live right down the street. Sizable bowl of mussels with an excellent sauce that was scooped up with the fabulous bread offered. Friends had the wood grilled octopus and both of them raved. I had the duck l'orange, crispy skin and moist inside, the sauce had a hint of orange and was not overpowering or too sweet. The side of baby carrots were tasty and not overcooked. Both of my friends ordered the salmon, we were all impressed at the portion size and all took home leftovers. We all agreed the meal was delicious and we would return."

  • "I took my mom, who was visiting from out of town. There aren't any restaurants like this where she's from. The food was amazing and the service was great. I've been to Rustic House before, and it continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in the city."

  • "Been to Rustic House several times. Always had a great meal and good service. This time both were mediocre. Octopus appetizer very tough, smoked oysters good but not memorable. My swordfish delicious but my guests meals of duck and scallops were nothing special. Duck was tough with skin not crisp. Service was lackluster. Drinks arrived 15 min after ordering and we were never asked about refills."

  • "We went for restaurant week and had an overall great experience! I ordered the grilled octopus and cleaned my plate it was so delicious. The duck with maple glaze had a great crust and was juicy but since it was left on the bone, it was difficult to eat gracefully. I tried my boyfriends steak and it was cooked perfectly and the au gratin potatoes were amazing! No complaints on dessert and I would definitely come back to try more off the menu!"

  • "We visited RH for restaurant week. I had the spinach salad for my app and the salmon for my entree. The salad was very tasty, with a perfectly poached egg, and the salmon was also cooked very well, but came out from the kitchen less than piping hot. My husband had the lobster bisque, which he described as "lobster-ey" (couldn't tell if that was a good thing) and the duck, which he thought was a little overdone. I thought it was done well and had a really great citrus glaze on it. Neither of the desserts were very good. The blondie was dry and lacked flavor. While the apple crumble had nice, crisp apples, it was a bit bland and lacked richness. $9 beers is a bit much. Not sure if we would go back outside of restaurant week."
