A word from Russian Tea Room - NYC
For over eighty-five years, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1927, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite-an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances. Diner Reviews
  • "I went to the Russian Tea Room with some friends to try it out during Restaurant week. The service was pretty good and efficient. The food was disappointing, though, because I was expecting the food to be more authentic, but that was not the case. It was Americanized Russian food. The restaurant was also quite loud, but you could still hear your friends from across the table. I would not come back to this restaurant for their normal menu because I was not impressed with the food (and I consider myself to be quite the foodie)."

  • "This place was really great to take my relatives when they visited me in NYC simply based on ambiance alone. It is a really cool place with a lot of history - a bit kitchy , but fun to take out of town folks. The food was good, but if it wasn't restaurant week and we were paying full price, I would not be impressed. I looked on their regular menu and it was 22 dollars for regular french onion soup. I have no problem paying more for food if the menu is creative, but that was not the case with this menu. All in all it was a great experience!"

  • "The Russian Tea Room was decorated vibrantly and the servers were attentive. The dishes were presentable and the food was a new experience for me. Definitely an interesting spot I have visited."

  • "My daughter and I ate lunch here during the week. Very carefully chose our attire and then were surprised to find shorts and tennis shoe wearing customers, UGH. very different from the 21 Club crowd we encountered on an earlier outing. People this is a special place don't bring it down. The food was exceptional!"

  • "The Russian Tea Room brings back memories of the "old New York" when every place had it's own distinct charm. And I found the restaurant to be quite charming, with a czarist Russia decor. The food and tea are both on the expensive side, so we took advantage of the Restaurant Week special. We were a party of 3, so we ended up having at least one of every selection on the table. Tasting each dish was fun, and the food was delicious. I wanted to take my daughter to an iconic New York restaurant, and am very glad we went."

  • "The food is great. The service is great. The servers are very professional and knowledgeable. They have a wide variety of drinks. The atmosphere is very cozy and warm. The design of the inside is very unique and nice. Overall we had a great time and enjoyed our dinner."

  • "It has the rather remarkable capacity to take a diner back to a. more elegant time and to an illusion of royal opulence. The food is really very good, and distinctively simple, too. If the prices weren't nuts ($8 for coffee) we would be there more often than during Restaurant Week."

  • "I was expecting better from what the weds it's said... It was good but I've been to better places in the city definately"

  • "RTR was always one of those classic places I wanted to try. The food was good, the atmosphere and staff were a bit cold."

  • "My friend and I wanted to take advantage of restaurant week and we heard so much about the Russian Tea Room and neither of us had ever been there, that's where we decided to go. Limited menu, smaller portions, but just enough for us. Food was delicious. Sometimes you go to these high profile places and the food doesn't live up to the hype. After sampling the food and drinks, I would definitely go back again."

  • "it was restaurant week, they served all 3 courses and check within ~30 minutes - I expected a better experience"

  • "I love Restaurant Week! This is when I get to experience New York's finest restaurants without breaking my bank. The Russian Tea Room is definitely one of NYC's finest. Upon our arrival, we were ushered to one of the famous banquettes where we had a spectacular view of the entire room. The staff was above reproach, always there but never intrusive. The food was fantastic. Even with the limited pre-fixe menu, the choices were excellent, making it hard to decide. Cocktails were made to perfection and the wine was divine. We were never made to feel like second-class customers because we were ordering from the RW menu.Overall, it was an excellent experience."

  • "My family is here from Belgium so we will be going to a few spots. This one was our fancy night out and I thought the food would be pretty and taste ok but it was delicious. We had a bottle of red and white to top it off, quiet night and great dinner."

  • "Although I knew about this place for years, this was my first visit. It was during NYC restaurant week and I stuck to the special menu although next time I will go through the full menu. We had reservations and were seated promptly by a friendly young lady but were served by a waiter who definitely had an attitude which colored our visit. The food was very good but the restaurant, although not crowded, was rather noisy."

  • "I went for lunch but it was empty to the point where there was no ambience to enjoy. the food was amazing and i want to go back just for a tea party like dining experience, hopefully there will be more people then."

  • "We are trying various places around Manhattan for their tea service We did the tea with champagne and caviar here We each were given our own raised trays of tea sandwiches and then desserts. This was very pleasant as Tea service is never a ton of food, so not having to share was very nice- although it was also extremely expensive, but we were prepared for that. Overall, highly pleasant experience if you are willing to spend the money"

  • "Went for my husbands birthday. The food was mediocre at best. Very overpriced...$5 for sodas (no refills for that price!)$8 for a regular coffee! Desserts seemed pre-packaged. Service lacking. Did not see the value in the $180 tab (and that was with no alcohol and on a groupon!)Restaurant was empty on a Saturday night in the summer...now I know why..."

  • "Visited the Russian Tea Room on a whirlwind visit to New York. Had heard nice things about this restaurant and I wanted to try it out, so we stopped in for brunch. It was quite delicious, and we were not disappointed. Of course we could have probably gotten a bigger, just as yummy brunch elsewhere for a lot less. The ambience was really nice, the wait staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive. So, if you're looking for a nice, quiet nook in the city, and you don't mind the prices, then I would recommend you stop by."

  • "The only flaw in my dining experience at the Russian Tea Room was a mild disappointment in the food. The caviar tasting was uninspired and the Kuleblaka was definitely not good. The salmon was dry and under-seasoned, the pastry was tough, and the vegetable paste was unappetizing. Not a good choice for me. However, the Champagne was delicious, the cheesecake was divine, and the service was outstanding. I enjoyed the experience despite the poor quality of the food."

  • "We had a wonderful girls-only high tea on Sunday. The food was lovely, great service- we had a truly good time. The bison grass vodka was amazing also. An excellent respite from the usual NY dining experiences we have had recently."

  • "This is truly a special place...The interior is gorgeous with samovars everywhere and abstract paintings and wonderful architecture.. I ordered the $60 menu which included borscht, salmon kulebiaka, and rasp. chocolate cake...everything was delicious..the kulebiaka came in two portions which actually was good for two people as it was a lot.. I would highly recommend just to see the interior!"

  • "At the Russian Tea Room! The beef stroganoff was absolutely to die for. Deliciously tender, surprising flavors...the black truffle horseradish cream...not your mother's stroganoff!"

  • "I was a little disappointed with the food selection, not as tasty, the place was a little to dark,(a lighting problem?).The service was great. will recommend this restaurant, my previous visit to this restaurant was much more enjoyable."

  • "The Russian Tea Room is a definite must for every New Yorker. The food was fantastic! It is very pricy, but still has a beautiful, romantic charm about it that regales to the heyday of the Tea Room. From the formal attire of the waitstaff to the samovars and ornate gold-leaf ceiling to the side-by-side booths lining the walls so that everyone could see and be seen, the Tea Room captures the essence of fancy, dressy dinners in NYC. As a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us, it absolutely began a magical night."

  • "I like the style of decor in RTR so I always seem to find myself here. Its too expensive for casual dinners for me but went here over the weekend for gf's birthday. the waiter was knowledgeable and gave us a small complimentary chocolate with lit candle for bday, which was nice since we were too full for a stand alone dessert. prix fixe when I went was $60 (may be different in other nights), but the price was not listed in the menu. would be convenient if it was so. • "A NYC tradition in decor but food is much too overpriced. $18 for dessert. Our dinner for three was $500. Best buy is actually the caviar & champagne tasting. "

  • "Caviar tastes not even worth the bother, tea sandwiches fairly standard, boring sweets lacking any creativity. Too bad because the opulent setting could be an inspiration for so much more...."

  • "The food at the Russian Tea Room, where I used often to eat, is abysmal now. We had rubbery overcooked lobster (recommended by waiter!) Awful blini -- cold, and tasted like they'd been sitting around a long time. The place is a disgrace."

  • "A New York City Icon which has met my every expectation on each visit. The ambiance, service and the Chef's delightful offerings blend harmoniously to guarantee a memorable experience at the Russian Tea Room. "
