A word from Russian Tea Room - NYC
For over eighty-five years, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1927, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite-an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances.

I love the look and feel of the Russian Tea Room. The Red Cushioned booths, Russian Decor, and styled staff give the place a great and unique ambiance. I prepared for the meal before hand by looking at the menu online which contained a beef entree with foie gras and truffle oil. When I arrived, this entree was not there so we got the next best thing which was the appetizer that came in dumplings and a soup and it was AWESOME. Smart choice of flavor pairings. The wife got the Beef Stroganoff (SP?) and I got the Pork tasting - though I'm not a huge fan of Pork. I liked both plates actually but both were super flavorful. So flavorful we couldn't finish our dishes. They were good so we took our leftovers home. We had the Russian evening Tea as well - a bitt bitter, but they give you a dish of cherries and sugar to pair with it. The service was excellent!

My husband and I decided to have breakfast here on his last morning in New York, just for fun. The service was very attentive, and his salmon eggs benedict was outstanding. I ordered the Czar's eggs, which were good but very awkward to eat. They came with three miniscule blini which were not enough to sop up the egg yolk that spilled out of the (perfectly cooked) soft boiled eggs, so I had to ask for some toast. I also ordered a raspberry danish, which was underbaked and a bit soggy.

Nice historic restaurant. We had the afternoon tea. It was a unique and interesting experience. Almost everything was terrific. There a few scones that appeared not to be very fresh and were a bit too hard, more than usual because we order scones all the time... other than that everything was perfect. The attention from the waiters was terrific but they need to smile a little more...

We went to New York from San Francisco to spend a weekend to celebrate my wife's birthday. My friend in Berkeley strongly recommended this place. The interior was gorgeous, but we felt very at home. We ate its signature foods (Beef Stroganoff and Chicken Kiev), and they were excellent. The Turkish waiter was very nice; he brought a candle for my wife and showed us the second floor which was usually locked. Among other surprises, we saw a huge glass bear in which gold fish were swimming! We were completely satisfied.

Service is exceptional however the food is nothing more than adequate. Cold, unimpressive bread to appetizers to entrees that are no better than thousands of competing restaurants. VERY expensive and simply not worth it based on their culinary skill. There are MUCH better restaurants in NYC for less than have the cost.

It is a prominent and well-known New York eatery, and I just wanted to check it out before the show. It was two of us. The staff is attentive and polite. The art on the walls is really great. The atmosphere indeed reminds an old-time Soviet expensive restaurant. We've got pancakes with caviar (salmon/trout ikura) as an appetizer, veal cheeks and beef a la Stroganoff as the main courses. The last two did not resemble what I would consider a Russian cuisine, but were fairly tasty. Vodka was served properly frozen, but in a whiskey glass. We finished the dinner on time. The bill was in a vicinity of $300. Overall impression: it was an interesting experience, but I doubt I will go there again.

When you go to a famous restaurant in a tourist area, you hope that it will be as good as you expect, and the Russian Tea Room did not disappoint. The service and the food were incredible and although it was our first time, we were treated like "regulars" I can't wait to go back. We had Chicken Kiev and Beef Stroganoff - fabulous!!!

My husband and I went here for Sunday brunch. I had the truffle quiche and the pan au chocolat which were both absolutely delicious (especially with a glass of champagne!). My husband had the sliders and seemed to enjoy them very much. He also ordered tea, which was presented in a very interesting mug and was accompanied by sour cherries (apparently a Russian tradition to put them in your tea) and yummy butter cookies. I would definitely recommend this place for brunch / high tea.

My wife and I went there for nostalgic reasons and wish we had not. Our waiter was great but that was the high point. The menu was unimaginitative and poorly prepared. Presentation was okay. When you come to NYC, you expect to pay more but then again you also expect high quality. You won't get it here. There was a reason for it being quiet no one was there. The decor is very appropriate but you can't eat it. Don't waste your money.

The restaurant is expensive. $8.00 for a cup of coffee, $10.00 for a small pot of tea, ridiculous. That being said, our meal was good, dessert was delicious. This restaurant is an experience that you should enjoy once, it is pretty in a gaudy way.

We have been going to the Russian Tea Room for years - everything from a nice dinner for 2 to larger family celebrations. It never disappoints. The restuarant is stunning. The service is impeccable - it hits that perfect balance of attentive without being intrusive. Caviar was spectacular and worth every penny. The remainder of the dinner was also fantastic. They could slide on their past and the beauty of the restaurant but they don't. They still care and it really shows. LOVE this place!

You can feel the spirits of notable writers, actors and taste-makers from the 20's and 30's in this gorgeous Tea Room. Russian tea is always served with cherries on the side. The dishes are authentic and delicious... the best Russian fare I've ever had. I simply could not resist the dessert of nougat ice cream (exquisite), toasted almonds, small pools of chocolate on the plate and tiny flecks of edible gold leaf all crowned with a touch of caviar...just enough salt to enhance the sweet! The entire meal, ambiance, service, food and atmosphere is unforgettable! A favorite of mine in New York. I'd like to work my way through the entire menu.

Gone are the shashik, the pirozhki, the waitstaff veterans of the defeated White Russian armies and the haunting murals of ballet scenes. All replaced by a limited menu, mediocre art on the walls bordering on the garish and vivid red banquettes presumably intended to lend the dining room an air of luxury and good taste. In fairness, the food is quite decent and not exorbitantly priced and the service is first rate even if this is not the Russian Tea Room of my youth and fond memory. It is an ideal spot to dine in before or after a concert in Carnegie Hall, especially in inclement weather.

The last time that I visited the Russian Tea Room which was a few years ago, it was a very nice experience. Unfortunately things are different. I was informed ownership had changed and with that came a sharp decline in food quality and service. I will not go into great detail about the disappointing food and service with a huge price attached to it…..suffice it to say that N.Y.C. is filled with fabulous restaurants but the Russian Tea Room is certainly not one of them.

I am an Australian citizen, but have known about The Russian Tea Room for many years. When last in NYC in 2007, my hotel room overlooked the red awning of the Tea Room and I wondered if I could afford to dine there. This trip we walked past and read the menu, agreeably surprised to know that the restaurant was affordable. We booked for lunch. What a beautiful experience. The room itself was breathtaking. the staff were extremely professional and the meal itself [ Borscht, Chicken Kiev, and Cheesecake ] was excellent. I will tell my Australian friends visiting NYC in the future to put The Russian Tea Room on their " Must Do " list. We also loved the history associated with the place.
