  • "This was always on our list of NYC things to do, and it is worth getting around to, although it's looking rather faded around the edges now. Of course you can go all out on the smoked salmon and caviar, but it's worth going just for a cup of fragrant spiced tea with cherries and honey, and some eggs or a quiche, which are more affordable. We both had the truffle and bacon quiche which was perfect for a light lunch. We ate it surrounded by red and gold curtains, carpets and booths swathed in chintzy fabrics and festooned with samovars. It can feel a bit overwhelming at times, but bland it ain't - wait til you see the Faberge eggs and matrioshkas in the basement by the loos. A fun one-off experience, but probably won't become a regular haunt."

  • "Always a treat, convenient next to Carnegie Hall. Love the eclectic art on the green walls and the gold leaf ceiling, and, of course, all the samovars. Been going here for years. Dinner entrees have become smaller but plated better. Not the best food but quite Russian and enjoyable. We had generous pours of our glasses of champagne."

  • "Always wanted to go there as that was a popular destination back in the 80s - 90s but never had an opportunity to go then. Went for breakfast. Service was average, the meal was on the small portion with regards to the price but I guess you're paying for the ambience. The ambience stayed accurate to the 80s, which we would have expected more. Getting back to the food, it was okay; nothing bad but nothing stood out. I'm glad to have been able to dine where I could only imagine as a child but unfortunately I feel like I missed the tea room when it was at it's peak."

  • "I expected over the top, but the service was anything but... I felt somewhat neglected throughout the meal, and when the bill came, there were $100 of extra items that we did not order. Excuse was the desserts from the neighboring table that ended up on our bill. The food was good, beef stroganoff and borscht, but the chicken kiev was a bit to lemony. Not great for the price..."

  • "We went to Carnegie Hall afterwards, literally a few steps away! The ambiance was great, the service spectacular and the food (although on the pricey side) was perfection. We loved this choice for the night, and it really made our Trip to New York City memorable. highly recommend !"

  • "I can only comment on the high tea and nothing else because that is the only thing my daughter and I ordered. The service was professional but not friendly. The waiter was not interested in the fact that I did not eat my desserts because the cupcakes were stale. For $35 more, I had the Royal High Tea and my daughter had the high tea. $35 gets you two 1/4 tsp. of Russian Caviar on a bilini. The caviar was good, but the sandwiches tasted like they were sitting in a fridge because even the bread was cold. Not good at all! The dessert was even worse....stale cupcakes! The tea was odd because I ordered Chai and English Breakfast and they tasted the same even though the waiter insisted they were different. I would not recommend."

  • "We stayed at a hotel a few doors east of the Russian Tea Room and went there during restaurant week in March 2014. The food and the atmosphere in 1974, when we were last there, were more memorable. This time, the prix fixe meals were nice but nothing special, though the servers went out of their way to accommodate our requests for brown bread and for fruit for my husband's dessert instead of either prix fixe choice. My husband enjoyed his borscht and beef more than I enjoyed my crepe and salmon. The upstairs room where we were seated is cold and glitzy but not truly atmospheric. My husband remarked that the glass doors with the letters RTR on them through which one enters and exits the restaurant are the nicest part of the evening."

  • "The food and ambiance were everything we expected it to be. But we were so rushed that it really detracted from the experience. We ordered a cocktail when we were seated, and we were served our appetizer and entree before the cocktail even came. Not relaxing at all. And at $16 per drink, we would have enjoyed it much more if we could have had it before eating. Our waiter hovered and made us feel like he couldn't wait for us to leave. The meal itself was spectacular, but we would not go back. Way too rushed for such a spectacular venue."

Great service and atmosphere, but if the food we were served during restaurant week is the same/ similar to their regular standards it is a let down. The prices are normally so mch higher that if the quality is about the same that it is grossly overpriced."

  • "To start our hostess was a lovely young lady, soft sspoken and very polite. Our waiter, Irakli was the greatest. He was warm, informative and very friendly. My coworker and I both had the salmon, jasmine rice and green beans; all of which were superb. The drinks (alcoholic) were recommended by Irakli and were also great. The dessert (cheesecake and a raspberry chocolatec cake was delicious. Fantastic looking place from the Faberge eggs to the gigantic bear fish tank. Lighting, colors and the uniforms were also impressive. Im very happy that I experienced The Russian Tea Room"

  • "Dinner at the RTR was the grande finale to our group of girlfriends' NYC trip to celebrate three special birthdays. The opulent ambience was perfect for this dress up occasion. We opted for the 2014 Restaurant Week prix fixe menu and the choices did not disappoint. The goat cheese and mushroom blinchik appetizer was a particular favorite as was the roasted salmon with citrus beurre blanc. Since we were among the last to leave (having had a late reservation) we were spontaneously treated to a peek at the giant crystal bear upstairs, a photo OP for our trip scrapbook that made the evening especially memorable. Thank you!"

  • "I expected much worse food and smaller portion than I experienced at The Russian Tea Room. I dined at this restaurant lunchtime during restaurant week which is the only time I will eat there as it is too over priced. This was the first time I ate at The Russian Tea Room. Although my entree was not on the regular menu, it was adequate, well prepared and served with vegetables, a light craeam sauce, and quite unusual unsalted spatzle. The service was satisfactory and robot like. I would not recommended The Russian Tea Room because it is not worth the inflated prices."

  • "This restaurant week dinner was very pleasant, seated in a magnificent dining room and surrounded by art masterpieces – whether originals or copies they made for terrific atmosphere. Service was very attentive. Our biggest regret was that the menu offered for restaurant week wasn't sufficiently Russian in character; only the appetizer course offered anything Russian. The food was well prepared, nicely presented and tasty, but was not great. My wife and enjoyed glasses of two different wines that were excellent and fairly priced, but apart from the restaurant week menu, most prices were quite high. I expected more from this landmark restaurant, but it was still a positive dining experience."

The dessert was good, the rest, barely passable and not even nicely presented. Glad to have checked this place off my NYC bucket-list though and it was worth the one-time Restaurant Week lunch ($25) visit."

  • "Went to the tea room during RW and hadn't been there in about 7 or 8 years. I had heard that when it reopened there were some service issues and they had changed the menu up. It seemed now that the service was just about as good as it was before (maybe a tiny bit less but still way above most places) and the food was excellent. The RW portions were a little small, but not uncommon. Still a tad crowded unless you have a booth, but overall a really nice night. Still expensive on the regular menu and the drinks are a bit high, but for the once in a while thing totally acceptable. Glad to see it back to it's traditional ways and menu."

  • "MY WIFE and I were there on Monday evening, March 3rd, 6:00pm reservation. We ordered from the "Restaurant Week" menu. I had Borscht; Filet of Beef with whipped potatoes, carrot, greens; and cheesecake. MY WIFE had Salad, Salmon, and Chocolate Tower. I accompanied with Pinot Noir, she with vodka. Service was exemplary. Decor over-the-top (but that's part of the charm.) We enjoyed all of the foods. I was especially taken with the filet. It was THE tenderest piece of beef I have ever had. One swipe with the knife, no pressure, to cut. And delicious, too. Done to perfection. We shared the desserts - The Chocolate Tower was a bit much for my taste, but MY WIFE loved it. The cheesecake was superb. An excellent evening all around."

I have wonderful 80s memories of the Russian Tea Room when I was working too hard and my friend whisked me to Your World of perfect eggplant and a world apart -- Keith Richards and two fun loving girls were in one of the booths -- Again yesterday in the 00s now I had the feeling that you step in that door and you are transported. Is it JUST the amazing borscht? The perfect beef?!! The cheesecake -- I looked across the booths at the couples, and at another booth of grandparents and little kids having tea sandwiches -- everything here is full of pomp and welcome, privacy and grandeur: I look forward to the Russian Tea Room experience for many years to come!!!!"
