A word from Russian Tea Room - NYC
For over eighty-five years, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1927, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite-an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances. Diner Reviews
  • "Although I knew about this place for years, this was my first visit. It was during NYC restaurant week and I stuck to the special menu although next time I will go through the full menu. We had reservations and were seated promptly by a friendly young lady but were served by a waiter who definitely had an attitude which colored our visit. The food was very good but the restaurant, although not crowded, was rather noisy."

  • "We are trying various places around Manhattan for their tea service We did the tea with champagne and caviar here We each were given our own raised trays of tea sandwiches and then desserts. This was very pleasant as Tea service is never a ton of food, so not having to share was very nice- although it was also extremely expensive, but we were prepared for that. Overall, highly pleasant experience if you are willing to spend the money"

  • "Went for my husbands birthday. The food was mediocre at best. Very overpriced...$5 for sodas (no refills for that price!)$8 for a regular coffee! Desserts seemed pre-packaged. Service lacking. Did not see the value in the $180 tab (and that was with no alcohol and on a groupon!)Restaurant was empty on a Saturday night in the summer...now I know why..."

  • "Visited the Russian Tea Room on a whirlwind visit to New York. Had heard nice things about this restaurant and I wanted to try it out, so we stopped in for brunch. It was quite delicious, and we were not disappointed. Of course we could have probably gotten a bigger, just as yummy brunch elsewhere for a lot less. The ambience was really nice, the wait staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive. So, if you're looking for a nice, quiet nook in the city, and you don't mind the prices, then I would recommend you stop by."

  • "We were staying near by, saw they had breakfast so decided to try it. Elegent decor and the service was fine but very friendly. Food was good but we found the cost of tea and coffee service ain't expensive."

  • "I went to the RTH because of movie features but enjoyed the experience. The food and sservice was good."

  • "The only flaw in my dining experience at the Russian Tea Room was a mild disappointment in the food. The caviar tasting was uninspired and the Kuleblaka was definitely not good. The salmon was dry and under-seasoned, the pastry was tough, and the vegetable paste was unappetizing. Not a good choice for me. However, the Champagne was delicious, the cheesecake was divine, and the service was outstanding. I enjoyed the experience despite the poor quality of the food."

  • "We had a wonderful girls-only high tea on Sunday. The food was lovely, great service- we had a truly good time. The bison grass vodka was amazing also. An excellent respite from the usual NY dining experiences we have had recently."

  • "This is truly a special place...The interior is gorgeous with samovars everywhere and abstract paintings and wonderful architecture.. I ordered the $60 menu which included borscht, salmon kulebiaka, and rasp. chocolate cake...everything was delicious..the kulebiaka came in two portions which actually was good for two people as it was a lot.. I would highly recommend just to see the interior!"

  • "At the Russian Tea Room! The beef stroganoff was absolutely to die for. Deliciously tender, surprising flavors...the black truffle horseradish cream...not your mother's stroganoff!"

  • "I usually do not complete these reviews - but this place deserves the effort. I cannot say enough about the food, the ambiance, and the service. Simply superb on all accounts."

  • "Our food was delicious and server was attentive but not hovering. The decor was what I had hoped, plush feeling, very Russian."

  • "The restaurant was almost completely empty for high tea so the service was very attentive. Food was well presented and the food was good. I'm glad I went for the experience."

  • "I was a little disappointed with the food selection, not as tasty, the place was a little to dark,(a lighting problem?).The service was great. will recommend this restaurant, my previous visit to this restaurant was much more enjoyable."

  • "The Russian Tea Room is a definite must for every New Yorker. The food was fantastic! It is very pricy, but still has a beautiful, romantic charm about it that regales to the heyday of the Tea Room. From the formal attire of the waitstaff to the samovars and ornate gold-leaf ceiling to the side-by-side booths lining the walls so that everyone could see and be seen, the Tea Room captures the essence of fancy, dressy dinners in NYC. As a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us, it absolutely began a magical night."

  • "I like the style of decor in RTR so I always seem to find myself here. Its too expensive for casual dinners for me but went here over the weekend for gf's birthday. the waiter was knowledgeable and gave us a small complimentary chocolate with lit candle for bday, which was nice since we were too full for a stand alone dessert. prix fixe when I went was $60 (may be different in other nights), but the price was not listed in the menu. would be convenient if it was so. • "Nothing more than a tourist trap. Went for 50th anniversary because we had gone so much in our younger days."

  • "A NYC tradition in decor but food is much too overpriced. $18 for dessert. Our dinner for three was $500. Best buy is actually the caviar & champagne tasting. "

  • "Caviar tastes not even worth the bother, tea sandwiches fairly standard, boring sweets lacking any creativity. Too bad because the opulent setting could be an inspiration for so much more...."

  • "The food at the Russian Tea Room, where I used often to eat, is abysmal now. We had rubbery overcooked lobster (recommended by waiter!) Awful blini -- cold, and tasted like they'd been sitting around a long time. The place is a disgrace."

  • "A New York City Icon which has met my every expectation on each visit. The ambiance, service and the Chef's delightful offerings blend harmoniously to guarantee a memorable experience at the Russian Tea Room. "

  • "Suddenly I was in a Seinfeld episode. The Russian Tea Room knows how to TAKE a reservation but they don't know how to KEEP a reservation. It was a rain soaked Friday afternoon and our reservation was for 4:30. It was to to be a very special occasion for high tea with two little girls who were so excited to be going out. We arrived past 5 due to the weather and train delays and the hostess said we were too late for tea and the chef would not have anything to give us. (What happened to what was prepared for our 4:30 reservation? NO TEA FOR YOU! NEXT!) We ordered from the dessert menu and had a wonderful time because of the company of two delightful little girls who enjoyed the decor and the marshmallows in their hot chocolate."

  • "Not many people know that the Russian Tea Room is open for breakfast. My wife and I had the restaurant to our self's, which was fun, but a shame. The food is excellent. I had eggs Benedict with salmon. The eggs were runny and the salmon was tender. I guess we should have had tea, but the coffee was very good. If you have a chance, you should stop by for breakfast."

  • "Service was cold and lacking. $50 for high tea got us tea bag tea, 6 blah mini sandwich squares, cracker with caviar, 2 mini cupcakes with dried up frosting and scones, which were actually very delicious, accept for the ones that were under baked (raw dough in the middle). However, they did replace quickly with fresh warm ones. If you must see I suggest tea and scones and definitely ask for the Devonshire cream! Otherwise, skip it."

  • "The food was great, the service was great including Sasha Alexander. I had the Vodka pairing and Russian caviar for appetizer, I had rack of lamb and my wife had salmon and beets was cooked to perfection "

  • "This restaurant is such a well-established eatery in New York City history ("Tootsie" with Dustin Hoffman was filmed there when his agent tells "Dorothy/Michael" that he wished he had gotten therapy) that it might be hard to sustain excellence, but they have succeeded in doing that. The server was very attentive without rushing us and the food was truly delectable. The atmosphere is fascinating with the jolly "Ballet Russe" colors and art works which give diners a chance to take in what feels like a very theatrical evocation of early 20th Century Russia. This was our third visit and we plan to go again when visiting New York City. "

  • "Impeccable service, interesting ambience with green walls, red booths and gold leaf ceiling. Beautiful collection of art work and nesting dolls that are available for purchase. Went on a Sun morning and had no problem getting a table. Tea is a must when dinning at the Russian Tea Room, they had a large selection of teas with a helpful discription of each. You must drink it with the cherries (the way it is done in Russia). The Russian Cinnamon Toast was define, served with sweet cream and/or maple syrup. The Kobe burger on a garlic roll was delicious also. They also had a nice selection of fresh squeezed juices and of course coffee too. We would have enjoyed a Mimosa with our brunch but they do not serve alchol before noon."

  • "Awesome entrance russian empire vibe with golden doors on a side and golden sign embedded in a ground. Red soft couches, some-of-russian theme paintings and room colors bring you an atmosphere of a taste of old-time Russia. Food is great, portions are somehow seemed a little smaller than I expected but that's normal with all 4-5 star restaurants especially in NYC. service is 5 star. Loved it. "

  • "great for pre or after concert. These menus are well priced and quickly served so you don't have to worry about being late. Nice for folks who have not been to NYC before because of its history."

  • "The Borscht: taste OK, texture watery. Lamb shank: very plain, ordinary presentation. Chicken Kiev: Chicken warm, plate and other contents cold. Service perfunctory. Granted that the weather was terrible, but the concert next door at Carnegie was brilliant and drew a full crowd. RTR should have been swarming with pre theater crowds, but barely 8-10 tables were full while we were there."

  • "It's a total tourist trap but you must go at least once! I realized I had never been and a couple other friends as well so on our little trip to NYC for a wine event, we went here for breakfast. I'm sure Breakfast is not the stellar meal to have here but it was lovely. The room is gorgeous, like visiting a museum really. My omelet was delicious and our fruit bowl perfect. I think I would have to be here for lunch or dinner to really give it a true food review but everyone should visit this NYC institution once in their life. Worth it! "

  • "If someone can ever proof me that the beef strognoff they serve could ever be called a beef strognoff ever prepared in Russia, I would change my rating over the food. As stated in my headline - very good services."
