We booked this last minute on opentable, after passing by it in Vail Village. It's an old school, Vail style, restaurant that seems to be quite popular with locals and visitors alike. It has a ver cozy feel to it and is rustic, but with white tablecloths to give a more upscale feel. the food is definitely top notch. 3 of us had the Steak Diane and it was incredible- sauce and quality of the beef. the other had ribs that literally fell off the bone and were lean. We sat a window table so we could see the covered bridge and creek. I would ask for a window table if possible. The bar also was crowded.

  • Worst server ever
    SteakmanVIP

Had high hopes for this establishment given its tenure but terribly disappointed. Our server Heather was the worst server I have ever had at a fine dining establishment. I ate two bites of my steak and when asked if I liked it I said not at all...she asked if I would like some more potatoes; strange. Her obvious disinterest in our experience and inability to pace a meal left a poor impression for the entire table. The one bright spot is the wine guy; great list and very knowledgable.

We go to Russell's every time we are in Vail. The food and wine are outstanding and Michael is doing a great job managing the place. If you want a great appetizer try the smoked salmon and capers...the best you will find anywhere. And, whether you are sitting at one of the tables along Gore Creek or people watching from a table overlooking the street you can't ask for a better "spot" in Vail.

This restaurant has perhaps the very best location in all of Vail - near the covered bridge, stream, and the crossroads of the town. It seems to be frequented by locals who hang out at the bar, and the decoration and ambiance are second to none. All the same, we found the menu dull - mostly oversized steaks and overpriced Alaskan King crab. The salad selection was short - just two salads and one was nothing more than Bibb lettuce with tomatoes - no flavor at all. The Wiener Schnitzel was probably a mistake to have ordered, even though the waiter said the cook was Austrian. It too had no flavor. The most disconcerting thing about the dinner was that there must be another Indian restaurant nearby, and aromas from it wafted in.

We ate here on our last evening in Vail recently. We had wonderful service. Our waitress was very personable, friendly and prompt. My husband and I both had the Steak Diane - the restaurants specialty. I ordered mine medium ( pink center waitress said) but when I got it it was more like med rare - red center. The waitress offered to put it back on the grill but I'm not a fan of er cooking meat. Seems like it always gets over done and dry. The meat was tender and had a good flavor but just not cooked to my liking. Other than that, the night was very enjoyable and the food was very good. Great atmosphere along the creek.

The drinks were good, the meal was delicious, and the waiter was excellent..after apologizing for slow service, which we didn't even notice, dessert was on the house. The beef medallions were cooked to perfection...rare! And the scalloped potatoes were TDF! The best I've ever had. The only down was the noise level which was much lower by 9:30.

Had okay dinner at Russell's this past week. Took family from out of town. Food was okay, but won't go back. Would recommend going to another restaurant. Note that 1/2 of the restaurant, if not more, is aware from any view of the creek in case that matters. It wasn't a big deal for us, but unless its a slow night and you have a smaller party I wouldn't count on a view.

It is a tradition that we eat at least once at Russell's every time we come to Vail. This time was no exception. We somehow lucked into one of the small tables next to the window with a view of the creek. A cool breeze came through the window. The dinner was wonderful. The food was, as always, cooked to perfection. Our server was incredible.... I'm pretty sure we have had the pleasure of her assistance before. The chocolate cake dessert was, as they say, "to die for" and ended a nearly perfect evening.

We went with friends after a concert. We were seated promptly, nice table. Server was friendly and obviously trying hard but failed in 2 respects -- mixed up the steak orders and never offered dessert. The thing that detracted most for us was charging for refilling soft drinks. The steaks and caesar salad were good, the onion soup great. Overpriced in our opinion compared to others in the area. A return is doubtful.

I love Russels for their dependable entres ie, Steak Diane. However, ( and I keep saying this) Chef should try to incorporate more local ingredients ie Palisade peaches, into more remarkable desserts. The dessert menu is always lack luster to me. And it could be superb. Please try.

The best restaurant location in Vail! It's quietly tucked away next to the covered bridge. The view from the river tables is incredible no matter which direction you face. My parents came to town on the closing weekend of Vail. We could not have had a better dining experience at Russell's. They sat us in a spot that looked out to the beautiful flowing creek. My husband and I had a soup and salad to start, then split the enormous portion of Alaskan King crab legs. It was outstanding! My mom went with the steak, and my Dad had the rainbow trout. Our waiter was outstanding - personable but left us alone to enjoy each other's company as well. He was prompt in getting the drinks and accurate on all the substitutes my mom requested. I highly recommend Russell's for the seafood, steak, and amazing ambience. It was truly a pleasure to dine there, and we will be sure to bring more guests.

I usually get to Vail once per winter, and we have always enjoyed Russell's. This year our steaks were excellent - my NY strip was as tender as a filet, and it was cooked perfectly. I really like the scalloped potatoes and broccoli, and they are included with the entree. The had a good selection of wines by the glass, and the prices are reasonable. I look forward to my next dinner there.
