Diner Reviews
  • "I find the Rugby Grille to be one of very few excellent restaurants in the metro Detroit area. The chef knows what he is doing."

  • "Best restaurant in the area. Food is perfect. KC strip was better than any steak house in the area. Service flawless. Having your 42 anniversary at such a wonderful restaurant is fabulous but making your wife happy is priceless."

  • " Love this place! Live my waiter, Jose'! The attention to detail is very good in all areas. The relaxed feeling you have while eating is rare today. The food is sooo good and presentation is lovely! Highly recommended!"

  • "We were given a gift card for the Rugby Grill and decided to try it. It was terrific -- the waitress was superb and the food over the top in flavor and presentation. A thoroughly pleasurable experience."

  • "Loved the vegan dish I had. My husband's fish with peppercorn sauce was yummy too. Bread to die for too! Good wine list. Great personal attention."

  • "The service was excellent, it's a small place fit into the hotel's "expensive" setting. Although the food was good it definitely didn't meet the standard for the money. One of our group didn't like the steak (over $50) because it had no flavor. I also understand marking up the wine prices but they as well were over the top. I suppose can afford to stay at the hotel and don't want to walk to some of the other dinning establishment in Birmingham you would find this to be OK. Or maybe because they are in the hotel they feel the prices are justified?"

  • "Quality, elegance, so enjoyable -- the special place to take your friends and family"

  • "My husband and I went to Rugby Grille to celebrate his birthday. The service was outstanding and contributed greatly to the five star rating that I gave them. The environment was beautiful, but I was very disappointed to see most of the guests dressed in jeans and flip flops. The food was delicious, including a sweet bottle of wine we ordered that was impeccably presented. "

  • "Brought a friend from out of town. Great ambiance. We both had lobster omelet. But something was missing. Until we got to the Boursin cheese, it was very bland/no flavor. My husband had eggs and sausage which was fine. Service was great as always. "

  • "Staff and restaurant did an excellant job to help us celebrate our anniversary. Food was superb and service was outstanding. "

  • "This was supposed to be a Mother's Day brunch but when we got there was told we were too late for lunch and too early for dinner. We ordered off the regular menu but I was irritated, to say the least. They also had few to little offerings for children."
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "We've eaten here several times and always loved it but this must have been an off day. Food was good but it took a long time getting it. Service was not good which could have caused much of the problem. Restaurant was not that busy so we hope this isn't a trend rather than just a bad day. "

  • "Lunch --food was not good. salad was marginal. prices were outrageous. very expensive valet. it used to be very good and reasonable. will not recommend it in the future."

  • "This restaurant reminds me of a high end New York Restaurant. It is quiet , elegant and the food is top notch."
    Dined on 5/2/2014
  • "The wine list is amazing on an I-pad. Wide ranging selections and reviews attached to each wine on the list. The food and service are outstanding. The best hotel dining in the area I'm sure and among the best restaurants."

  • "The service was a little slow. It seemed as if there was only one server for all of the table that afternoon. "
    Dined on 4/27/2014
  • "While the brunch menu is brief......most diners will find a delightful selection....my fav is the brioche French toast! Our waiter was extremely attentive and humorous which we enjoyed! Our party of four....was not rushed despite our desire for a long conversational brunch......"

  • "Excellent food and service!!!!! Always find the food and staff to be on the cutting edge. "

  • "My husband and I were on a business trip and stayed overnight at the Townsend Hotel. We had dinner in the Rugby Grille. Our dinner was nicely prepared and served. Our wait person was very friendly and helpful and was able to make some good recommendations which we enjoyed. It was a pleasant evening."

  • "Upon our arrival we had to wait approximately five minutes to be greeted which is fine I understand it was sunday brunch and it gets busy. We then got seated and waited about ten minutes to be greeted by our server who seemed confused that he had to take our order. Other than that it was a fine experience"

  • "Great food and service. This is a restaurant that I'd save for the most special of occasions but will continue to dine elsewhere for most occasions due to the expensive prices. That being said, it's Birmingham and I'm sure most locals could care less about cost."

  • "I believe this is the top restaurant in the area. It deserves the highest rating possible. Food delicious; service impeccable; staff so friendly; ambience beautiful."

  • "The Rugby is one if my favorite places for brunch. I'm not find of buffets and the Rugby has a great selection of dishes which changes from time to time."

  • "One of the few venues in SE Michigan with reliable elegant cuisine. The service is usually excellent but has been known to falter. The prices are intimidating but the quality is there. I like the private, quiet atmosphere and usual gracious service."

  • "Went there to celebrate my birthday. The service and food were excellent as always!"

  • "When our breakfast arrived it was cold, the ham was over cooked. The waiter was very friendly."

  • "Food for as wonderful. This was a special occasion and first time visit to Rugby. We were sat on what appeared to be a hallway converted to extra dining space. This would've been OK if the corridor had also be closed off to accommodate diners. However it remained a very busy corridor with a wedding party bustling through with awful perfumes, colognes, noisy children and a loud DJ. No one from the Rugby staff even attempted to manage the noise level or ask those of us seated in the area, if we were bothered. For the cost, I would not go back or recommend. There are other restaurants in the area with superb food, service and better ambience."

  • "We enjoyed parts of our Valentines Night dinner. They offered a coursed meal that left me unimpressed. The options sounded amazing, but the execution wasn't that great. I will return as my only experience was on Valentines Day."

  • "The restaurant is marketed as a high end option and the pricing point commands a very high expectation however the overall experience and the food falls short. Plating presentation is sketchy and taste is bland for most dishes Service is attentive but not spectacular and table setup and decoration are subpar"

  • "My dovre soul was outstanding, good sized, with a nice sized portion of sides. My wife's fish was very small but good."
    Dined on 2/3/2014
  • "A very nice Birmingham restaurant, a little pricey though. Food was definitely over-cooked - even burgers, sent them back. And they got them right. Salmon was almost over cooked, but still just in range. Staff was mostly very attentive."

  • "My husband enjoyed the limited time prix fix dinner for the "Taste of Birmingham" week. I had the Dover Sole from the traditional menu which was the best I have ever had including Paris. The service is outstanding. This is probably one of the truly fine dining experiences in Southeast Michigan."

  • "I have eaten at the Rugby Grille on numerous occasions but this time, service was horrible. The check was "thrown" on our table, we received no refills of water or coffee and when my friend asked to take home the other half if her sandwich, the sandwich was perfunctorily placed in a black styrofoam container without being placed in a bag! It will definitely be awhile before I return to the Rugby Grille."

  • "I enjoyed my overall experience at Rugby grill, food was tasty and service was good. All would be perfect except that I didn't like the way hostess responded when I asked her to be moved to a different table, she wasn't interested in helping us at all and we wee sitting next to the entry door in a chilly area."

  • "We were looking forward to a great meal, after deciding to make reservations based on the reviews for this restaurant. Our meal was overpriced, for the quality. The wine list is small. Our waitress was inexperienced, and we were asked three times in about 10 minutes if we had picked out a bottle of wine yet. We were sat by a table of six very loud patrons, and had to ask to be moved to a quieter table. Food is good, but wasn't worth $350!"
