The tasting menu is inventive and delicious and the wine pairings really enhanced the dishes. (Wonderful wine by the glass choices in the lobby before dinner, too.) The atmosphere is cozy but not stuffy and the service attentive and friendly. Come on, people! Why are there empty tables at this great place on a Saturday night??? Such good food...

Lunch at the Rugby Grill in the Townsend Hotel was a disappointing experience. I ordered a salad which consisted of a large bowl of cut up lettuce, some chick peas, a few small tomato pieces, cucumbers and a few bits of avocado. I declined the egg and cheese which were listed as part of the dish. I suggested the addition of avocado. The waiter had no suggestions. Over all, the menu did not reflect current trends for a variety of greens in salads or other forms of protein such as sautéed tofu.

It is very unusual not to give The Rugby Grill 5 stars. I eat here several times a year (for many years). I ordered lamb chops (as I did on my visit a few months earlier) and I was served 1 chop with about 1 1/2 inch diameter, 3/4 inch thick of meat on a bone and a smaller bit of lamb off the bone. Although this was very tasty, the quantity served would have even been disappointing as an appetizer. Last time I ordered this, it was a "meal-sized" serving. When the manager asked how things were and I expressed my disappointment, he apologized but did nothing to correct the situation. I'm not sure what went wrong this visit as things here are usually the very best. I hope this was an anomaly and does not indicate a change for the worst.

  • Great service & food, odd layout
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008

Upon arriving the staff, knowing it was our anniverary, greeted us and had rose petals/card at the table; small touch, but very impressive. The table was in a good location, but the dining room is adjacent to the bar; an odd setup. There was a group of people at the bar being loud and obnoxious, ruining any ability to enjoy the atmosphere. After about 20 minutes, the manager asked the group to quiet down and were extremely apologetic to us (we found out later they had been drinking for 3 hours). They obliged and one of the bar guests offered to buy our dinner; nice gesture. Still, an odd setup to have people paying $100/meal next to a bar. Nonetheless, the food was amazing and the service may have been the best I ever experienced.

Used to be my favorite place. Now, not so much. Service has gone down, dramatically. Went there after a show, just dessert and coffee. Could barely get the waitress to acknowledge us; no coffee refill; almost judgmental because we didn't order food. Recently there for dinner meeting. Waitress was too busy talking to customers at the bar; again, no coffee refills, no real service during dinner, DISAPPOINTING. Not sure I'll go back.

The Rugby Grille never fails to deliver. We enjoyed their foie gras and tuna tartare appetizers, a small chef's surprise, followed by the New York Strip steak and the salmon over a fantastic lobster risotto. We will be back! Thank you for a wonderful birthday dinner!

When one charges the top of the spectrum, one has to deliver on every level. Experience was an almost. Waitress was informed and was okay. Unfortunately, she was the weak link in an otherwise exceptional meal. Asking twice for things is not acceptable at any restaurant. However, for one to have to repeatedly ask for one's needs to be fulfilled at a restaurant in this price point is unacceptable. The waitress threw away the best part of my meal because she thought I was joking when I indicated I wanted the salmon roe. Go figure. Maybe next time I should give her instructions by written notes.

When you go to the Rugby Grill you know you will be treated grand. The food is fantabulous, the service is "special", and you will feel like you are "regal"! Jose' our waiter is a very special man. His attention to detail is always spot on. His kindness is real, and he makes you feel that all is well and you can just sit back and enjoy your eating experience. We always request his area. The Rugby Grill is great for fine dining for evening. It is wonderful for breakfast. We enjoy breakfast because the coffee is the best! The bread basket is great, and the quiet atmosphere is nice for talking. You won't be a bit sorry if you visit this special place. The hotel is lovely as well.

The service was excellent, it's a small place fit into the hotel's "expensive" setting. Although the food was good it definitely didn't meet the standard for the money. One of our group didn't like the steak (over $50) because it had no flavor. I also understand marking up the wine prices but they as well were over the top. I suppose can afford to stay at the hotel and don't want to walk to some of the other dinning establishment in Birmingham you would find this to be OK. Or maybe because they are in the hotel they feel the prices are justified?
