A word from Rue Dumaine
Chef Anne Kearney and Tom Sand Jr., co-proprietors, welcome you to their home! We have created a unique atmosphere where you can celebrate the good things in life, and put your cares on hold for a few hours. The décor has been created with many French bistro elements. Rue Dumaine specializes in an Americanized version of classic French flavors. Come savor duck rillette crepes, or indulge in crispy Herb de Provence frog legs, or a robust serving of Cabernet braised short ribs. Chef Anne is passionate about local ingredients such as honey, organic eggs, and all-natural chicken from Ed Hill’s farm in Xenia. Only the best artisan cheeses, gelato, vegetables and breads are brought in; everything else is prepared in-house. Menus change seasonally to accommodate fresh produce and seasonal specialties from local suppliers. The wine room is stocked with “wines from around the world” chosen from boutique wineries that exhibit “attention to detail” in all aspects of their winemaking process.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We arrived on a weeknight about 8:10 for our 8:00 reservations and, within a few minutes of being seated, more than half the tables had left. It was quiet. There was enough activity at the bar and were enough diners to avoid that lonely feeling of an empty restaurant. Best of all, there was no feeling that someone was waiting for the table. We were pampered with great food and drink that we enjoyed at a leisurely pace."

  • "Overall enjoyed the evening. House salad was quite enjoyable. Salmon was very good. Nice selective wine list."

  • "Our family went to Rue Dumaine to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. We can't find enough superlatives to describe the entire experience. Service was very attentive and not intrusive. The menu offered great variety and everything we tried was 5 star delicious. Presentation was very appealing. Portion size was spot on. Salads were fresh flavorful and light. The salmon carpaccio was flavorful and tender. The wild mushrooms and waffle were a savory treat. My wife tried the hanger steak, my son the pheasant and I had the salmon. All were perfectly prepared. The brussel sprouts are a family favorite! We tried the mango sorbet and chocolate gelato for dessert. Both were spectacular. (Jenni's move over!!!) RD is a gem for South West Ohio."

  • "I always enjoy dining at Rue Dumaine. The food is excellent and prepared from local ingredients. The majority of the menu items are gluten free, and since most are made to order the chef is willing to modify items to meet dietary considerations."

  • "Best food in Ohio, creative and imaginative menu with amazing specials every night. Chef Anne uses local produce and makes it a delight to dine there."

  • "I think this restaurants is one of the better ones in the area. They chef comes to look over your food and see how you are doing. Water glasses are always filled. Decent wine list. My waiter wasn't great, unfortunately and ended up spending more time with other certain guests."

  • "I know this has been around for a handful of years now, but I just now made it to Rue Dumaine -- and wow, what a gem! I lived in DC for several years and believe RD is on par with many of the treats there. I will definitely recommend this to friends, family and business acquaintances."

  • "A favorite spot for dinner.. always excellent.. a little pricey vs local options, but superior in every way."

  • "We were a party of six. While drinks arrive Johnny on the spot, the entrees took more than one hour to arrive. And when they did, fish was over cooked- perhaps under the lights too long. It's noisy, Seating is very close. I don't get what all the fuss is about."

  • "The food was exquisite. The presentation was beautiful. The wine list for by the glass was short but exceptional choices. The bread would have been better served warm, but still good. Love the fact the food comes from where we live! Don't miss them gem- you will forget you are in Dayton, Ohio!"

  • "This is hands down our favorite special occasion restaurant in Dayton. Everything is always perfect. The vegetables are cooked just right. The sauces unify the food vs overwhelming. I have never been anything but impressed by the service, the beautiful presentation, freshness of ingredients, or outstanding flavor of the food. ALWAYS perfect!"

  • "Lived in Dayton for decades. Moved away last summer. When I come back to visit, I have 4-5 certain restaurants that I need to visit to get my "Dayton fix" cured. Rue Dumaine is one of those "must go to" for me. One of the best in southern Ohio. If you have never been, you owe it to yourself."

  • "My husband and I dined here for a date night out and we had such an amazing experience! Everything we ordered had so much taste and was just delicious! The service was hospitable, the drinks were wonderful and the atmosphere was somehow classy and comfortable at the same time. Loved it and we're definitely looking forward to going back!"

  • "Excellent food, well prepared & presented. Very good, knowledgeable service. Wine very good. A bit pricey versus other restaurants. Noise was moderate, but acoustics not very good - a bit hard to hear your dining partner when restaurant was mostly full, A really nice selection of food: scallops great! salads and soups great! pork medallions outstanding!!! Salmon was good but sort of bland. Deserts excellent."

  • "From the moment we walked in the door, everything was amazing. The service was attentive, but not overbearing. The food was some of the best we've had in a while. Chef Anne showed a genuine interest in our satisfaction and visited each table to check on everyone's experience. Rue Dumaine is first class in every way, but still down to earth. We will certainly go back whenever we can!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated my home-coming with a romantic dinner at Rue Dumaine on a Friday Evening. Service was spectacular and began by being seated by the Chef. Rue Dumaine would hold its own in any of the largest U.S. cities and is the type of place I expect to find when visiting Chicago, NYC or Los Angeles. The Dayton area is lucky to call itself home to such an approachable yet upscale dining experience. I would highly recommend Rue Dumaine to even the snobbiest of Foodies."

  • "We are older so the noise level was way too high for conversation. Would be nice to be able to get a more secluded table. However the excellent food does make up for it."

  • "Wear either a suit jacket or what I would call "smart casual". I wouldn't wear jeans there. The wait staff are very informed. I appreciated our server telling us wines that paired well with the specials. If you are looking to maximize your "value" and take home left overs, this place isn't for you. I appreciate that they serve appropriately sized meals, not following most of America's over indulgent buffet attitude. The food was divine. The waitress did not once reach over me to serve another person in our party. She took the time to walk around the table to serve food. The head chef, who was the owner as well, came and asked how our meals were and thanked us for coming. To give you an idea of the price, the bill for two of us was $86."

  • "Friendly, welcoming spirit. Lots of unique dishes. Probably have to go a couple of times as the combinations are quite unique. As a result we liked some of the dishes, but not all of them. The service was good. Didn't like the table setup. Felt a little cold and would be loud when filled. I'd go back again."

  • "My wife and I selected Rue Dumaine for my birthday dinner and it could not have been better. The food and service were fantastic and the evening specials certainly demonstrated why this chef wins national and international recognition. A wonderful evening!"

  • "A great restaurant with a New York feel and food on par with any big city. Servers wine selection was perfect and the salmon special was served as requested and excellent very appealing. A great place for romantic dinner or special or quick lunch."

  • "My wife and I live close by but have never eaten at the restaurant until last Friday evening. We were pleasantly surprised. We were warmly greeted and treated special once they learned it was our first time. The food was outstanding both salads and entrées. The dessert was excellent as well and was on the house as a treat from the chef for trying them out for the evening. We look forward to our next meal and it will become a regular for us in the future."

  • "Everything was really well prepared and was wonderful. The wine list is good; very well chosen. The server was knowledgeable and wasn't afraid to to ask someone else when he wasn't sure. There were some poorly timed service issues- one course served before the prior one was cleared - at a neighboring table. A lovely touch was that the chef circulated several times and spoke to every table."

  • "Excellent balance in tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami) in the meals. Definitely an A1 chef. Very nice plating. Superb atmosphere. Good push in the right direction of using quality ingredients. Would like to see more local and organic ingredients. Would also be nice to have some more high-end restaurant experienced wait staff."

  • "Heard about Rue Dumaine from a friend and made the drive up from Cincinnati. Totally worth the trip!!! Our server was awesome -- informative and engaging but not pushy. She was there when she needed to be and offered great suggestions when we asked. The food was spot on! Not a huge menu, and good use of ingredients. The lemon-almond cake was amazing!!! Can't recommend that enough!!!"

  • "Two of us ordered scallops, the other oysters. Excellent flavors, cooked perfectly. Pea soup as an appetizer was fresh tasting and delicious."

  • "As always, the food here was outstanding. The house-smoked ham is to die for and the fried oyster appetizers as well. Only problem was the service was a bit slow. It was a early on a Wednesday evening and not many other diners there when we came (5:45), but it took forever to get our food. Not sure what the hold-up was although when it came, it was delicious!"

  • "We chose Rue Dumaine for our 53rd wedding anniversary dining. Why, because we love the food Ann prepares. It is Prepared to perfection and because the produces are purchased locally as much as possible. Definitely fresh, very pleasing to the palate. One feels as though the freshious ingredients are prepared and served to her customers. Is one reason we return. The only complaint I can think of are the tables are too close together and it's not always easy to dismiss what the people seated at the table next to you is discussing. Rue Dumane is one of our favorites."

  • "Rue Dumaine is our special occasion restaurant of choice. The chef and her menu are always amazing. The food is perfect every time, the restaurant is beautiful, and just being there is a joy. They obviously do a really good job of training their staff, too. We're always pleased with our experience in every way."

  • "My first visit to Rue Dumaine was overall enjoyable. The food was better than average for sure but didn't give me that wow factor. The atmosphere was unique and enjoyable. The servers were professional and very attentive. I would say this is a good restaurant for somone who enjoys more fancy food and smaller portions and is used to this. Not for the casual everyday diner. As said, overall this was an enjoyable experience."

  • "My wife and I have eaten here several times, and the food here is simply the best in Dayton. We are always trying new restaurants, so I'm not joking. The menu has good variety. They have fish, duck, steak, pork, and vegetarian options. Their short menu changes from time to time, so there is often something new to try."

  • "This is by far the most attentive, service and customer focused driven restaurant that you will ever dine in. The food and the presentation of the dishes sets the standard extremely high. It is a fabulous place to enjoy dinner with friends or to have a romantic dinner with that special someone."

  • "Interesting dishes with interesting ingredients. Not your ordinary fare, which made this a great experience. The chef is delightful and stopped to talk with us for 15 minutes!! Plan to return often!"

  • "My husband and I were in the area visiting family, and although we were a bit concerned about the sort of dining spots available without having to travel to Dayton or Cincinnati, we should not have been. The food was wonderful, the restaurant was very nice, and the service was great. I was a bit skeptical about the kind of restaurants one would find in a strip mall, but it seems as though in Ohio everything is located in a strip mall, so I won't hold that against it. I've seen reviewers complain about the portion size, but I ordered a small plate and still thought the portions were fine. It was nice to be able to get all the courses in without making myself feel obnoxiously full for the rest of the night. Will definitely return."
