Walking into Ruby Foo is walking back in time to a magical 1920's movie version of China. Just sitting in the room is fun. The staff is solicitous and charming. The food is beautifully arranged and delicious. The only problem was that main courses required a half hour to prepare which would have made us late for the theater. Instead we shared five small plates of appetizers and dim sum.

  • The River and Ruby Foo's
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006

I stopped into Ruby Foo's before a Sunday matinee show of The River with Hugh Jackman. The food was great and the service was outstanding. Had a wonderful waitress who was attentive without being smothering and made great suggestions about the food. When I asked about an ingredient in a drink, she went off and found out what it was--a Caribbean herb--and didn't try to brush off my question or pretend she knew when she didn't. She was awesome. There were kids sitting at a table making origami figures with someone from the restaurant. Great idea. The Mongolian chicken wings and Tamarind beef ribs were delicious. I had two orders of the wings, sweet and spicy, with just enough cilantro to give them that extra kick. Too bad I live in Seattle, I'd be a regular if I could.

With all of the larger than life chains in Times Square - a hidden gem is Ruby Foo's! Step through the door and you are in the Orient! The staff is friendly and fun - the menu has great selections from sushi and stir-fry - don't miss out on the Peking Duck Fried Rice! Great for families, groups and couples - Ruby Foo's is so accommodating! Comfortable and energetic at the same time - you are steps away from busy Times Square but settled in the comfort of Asian cuisine. Enjoy!

The first thing you should do is not require more 50 words. This kind of thing takes time and most people don't have it. Would be great if you just ask easy one word/choice questions rather than a long review. The service was fine, food was fine, wait staff was very good. Was a good choice for a family get together before theater. Thank you. Here's hoping this is enough words because I won't finish it if it isn't

third time at Ruby Foo's, went back because of the gluten free menu. They still carry gluten free items but no longer have a separate menu and it isn't even labeled. the server offered to help but would prefer to have read options. Also menu seems to be about 1/3 of what I remember it to be a couple years ago. Disappointed in the lack of variety outside of sushi. I was there for other things and did not find many things I really wanted to try. What we had was flavorful and great, but felt I had very few choices to order. (5 or 6 entrees and 5 or 6 rice/noodle dishes and that was it). there are lots of other restaurants I'll try before coming back again after this visit. Last time I went I knew I'd come back again! Sorry that changed

I have been to Ruby Foo's several times in the past. We always loved the food and how it is in the heart of Times Square. When I was looking for a place to bring my daughter and her friends for her 16th birthday, Ruby Foo's came to mind. We were a party of 11 and were seated immediately. The waiter was very nice and the girls loved him. Those were the only two good things about Ruby Foo's, however. The menu was changed completely. I wasn't even sure if everyone would find something they liked. The portions got smaller and I think Foo's is the only Chinese restaurant that actually charges for rice!!!!!!!! So many dishes that we loved are not on the menu anymore. They were not in a rush to get us out and, as a result, we almost missed our train since dinner was two hours long. I thought that Ruby Foo's would have been the perfect ending to a sweet sixteen celebration, but, unfortunately, it wasn't. I was hungry when I got home! I won't be visiting Foo's in the future when I am in the city. Too bad everything changed because it is in the perfect location.

this place used to be a gem in the area, and not a tourist trap but times have changed. The plates are small, they charge you for rice (entrees don't come with it) and everything is overpriced. The ambience is really cool, but if you're looking for decent food at non-gouging prices avoid this place.

Lunch menu is very limited. Our waitress was extremely nice. Food was fresh. The thing I didn't like about this place is that the menu items were described differently than served. They put cilantro in every dish we ordered and it wasn't in any of the descriptions on the menu. They even put it in our sushi roll, who does that? I think the chief really likes this herb. I am not a huge fan but can deal with it in small amounts, the quantity we pulled out of the dishes were crazy! Really ruined it for all of us. Defiantly a tourist trap. There are so many better places.

Chose this restaurant despite mixed reviews to meet a friend. Tried a drink specialty during Happy Hour called a Plum Sake Sangria. Not my favorite as I expected it to be sweeter. The décor is very modern Chinese and we enjoyed the surroundings. Food was good but nothing special. The sushi looked very good. Price was average for NYC. A fine tourist stop on occasion.

Entree items were very disappointing, overly spicy with few choices. Waiter not well versed in menu. Sent back a dish and waited about 10 minutes for the waiter to come back to our table to tell us that the manager said we could order something else. The manager never came over to the table. Server was pleasant but not of the caliber expected.

Ruby Foo's is located in Times Square, which makes it very convenient for dinner if you are heading to a Broadway show, or just looking to take a break from sightseeing in the Square. The menu includes a range of Asian foods, from dim sum to sushi to pad thai. Some dishes were outstanding, such as the tamarind ribs appetizer, but others were fairly average. The restaurant has a fun vibe, from its décor to some of the imaginative cocktails.

What a perfect ending to perfect trip and a perfect play. A group of 9 ladies enjoyed a day of theater and food. Ruby Foo's was the icing on the cake. The atmosphere was perfect. We were able to sit around the table and talk without having to yell. Everyone enjoyed their meals. And they even gave the birthday lady a special treat. The portions were perfect, just eggnog to fill you up without feeling stuffed. And we weren't hungry a few minutes later.

My husband and I had a very late reservation and did not want to have a big dinner. Ruby Foo's offers a good selection of small plates. We shared vegetable fried rice and shrimp and lobster egg rolls. They tasted great and were plenty of food for an after theater dinner. The rice was particularly tasty. They also offer traditional desserts and take aways if you are headed to the theater. Warm cookies and caramel popcorn "to go" which is a fun addition.

I definitely would not recommend this restaurant. It's a complete tourist trap. Everything has an up charge. We ordered calamari as an appetizer and we seriously laughed when it arrived. Maybe 6-7 little rings and sauce. I felt for the server, who had to inform us the ridicules rules (happy hour only at the bar, extra cost for rice, etc). Don't go - find somewhere else.

And entrees don't just come with rice, you have to order a side of it. Really? Portions have gotten really small. We asked how large the fried rice was & was told it "used to be bigger." Dim sum/appetizers are tasty, but come on, calamari had probably 12 tiny rings in there. When we asked for a side of sweet chili sauce w/dinner, it came out in a tiny flat soy sauce-type saucer. Can you spare it? Laughed when I saw a steak on the menu for $55... and it was unspecified, just "steak." Ruby Foo's: you're not as crowded as you were years ago - competition is slim for large Asian restaurants, but get it together or you'll be packing up your chopsticks. You don't get return customers that way, and my entire party was locals, not tourists.

Honestly, the sushi dinner for $25 only came with 3 pieces, really! 3 dumplings per order, really! $10 for a side of rice. I get that it's Times sq., and touristy and all, but get a life. Way too expensive for ordinary chinese food. Could have gotten the same thing anywhere else for a third of the price.

This was a fun Asian Fusion experience near the heart of Broadway and Time Square. The food was good and the ambiance was fun. The service was fast and friendly (although they failed to bring something we ordered). My only complaint is that you don't get much food for the price. I ordered a sushi platter for one and barely received enough food to be satisfied. The menu says four rolls of sushi plus a Maki roll. But the four rolls were really two - sliced in half. For $25 I expected full rolls. Otherwise, the food tasted very good and the experience was a good one.

The location was perfect on a rainy night. For years, I have heard of Ruby Foo's and was delighted when we could get reservations. But I should have wondered when the place was more than half empty when we got there. The waiter was arrogant and short tempered when he was there. He said the rice we needed to order extra wasn't spicy and it was. Serving utensils for the entree and plates had to be asked for. The pork was fatty. The atmosphere and decor of the room was lovely. I was in the good company of my daughters so I was happy.
