  • "If any place merits "Neighborhood Gem." this is it. Year after year, RT's is a reliable source for New Orleans-style food while others have come and gone. A chocolately roux (no tomato) underlies many dishes -- including the crawfish etouffee we can't seem to not order. The shrimp and crab beignets seemed more generous with the seafood but were lighter and greaseless with a delicious remoulade. Good attentive service. Serviceable selection of wines by the glass."

  • "Went to RTs after hearing how great the food was. Decided to order one of their specials that day, and while it was definitely yummy, the amount of salt was ridiculous (way too much). I believe my girlfriend enjoyed the jambalaya a lot more though and would have given it an outstanding rating. The salt was something I could have gotten over until... we were rushed out at the end. A waiter came by and asked if my girlfriend was done. She said sure, she'll take the rest home and eat it for lunch the next day. He says okay, takes the plate, and never returns with a box. A minute later, while the fork is in my hand, our table's waitress comes by and asks me if I'm done. I tell her "Almost" and she takes it away..."

  • "Friendly neighborhood place with excellent food; lively conversations at every table, and just enough noise so you can't hear what anybody else is saying. Perfect for Washington."

  • "While the food and service were very good the decor of the restaurant is frozen in the 1980's with drab green banquettes, blond wood, and outdated ceiling fans. Nothing has changed in 25 years and it is time for the interior of this restaurant to be as good as the food with a new layout, new color scheme and fresh accessories."

  • "This was my first time at the restaurant and it was amazing. Great service and even better food. My boyfriend and I have said that this restaurant is going to be our new spot."

  • "As always, my husband and I enjoyed our dinner. The appetizer special mussels were great….I had to fight my husband for them. I had the Smothered Catfish and my husband had the Oysters Nezpique. Both dishes were served hot…just the way we like it! The service was first class, they were attentive to us, keeping our water glasses filled."

  • "Arrived early for a show at the Birchmere. Was curious with all of the other opinions. Have been to Orleans several times for the real thing and like to mess around in the kitchen. Their food was very authentic. Had a great fried catfish smothered in Ettoufee with very tasty shrimp, and nice bread for soaking it up.I'm still learning how to make a great Roux. Wife had the Gumbo to die for. Wonderful flavors all seafood was very flavorful, too much for her to eat. We finished it the next day over blackened Catfish on the grill. All I can we really enjoy the dinners."

  • "Had their oysters and chicken gumbo. Both items were excellent. Bar was very quiet, which is exactly what I was looking for at the time. The told me it's not usually that way, though."

  • "Authentic Cajun cuisine. The specials for Fat Tuesday were fantastic. The Seafood Etouffe and the Cajun Short Ribs were delicious. Good wine selection. Also, the ambiance in the restaurant with all the staff wearing and passing out Mardi Gras beads made for a fun atmosphere. Highly recommended. Also, the local art in RT's made for a nice conversation."

  • "My friends and I go to RTs every year for Mardi Gras. The service was pretty good - server was attentive. The atmosphere was lively. They have the best hurricanes. My friend found a baby in her king cake and received a really awesome gift basket. We love RTs and will be back every for our favorite holiday."

  • "In my opinion this tastes like amazing New Orleans food - salty, spicy, oysters everywhere. We had an oyster with ham and cream sauce appetizer, étouffée and another oyster for dinner. They have Abita beer. Free king cake on Mardi gras. The music was very low and the waiter was very busy. Drinks were empty at a time. Decor is like a pub with modern art. On Mardi Gras you would think it would be more jovial. Perhaps the fault of serious patrons? Very nice hostess, called when we forgot the credit card in the sleeve. We left saying "why don't we eat here more often than once a year?""

  • "I've been here multiple times over the past 20 years and the food is always excellent and has it's own unique flavor and spices. The table we had wasn't ideal right next to the Maitre d' table but the place was full on a Friday night. If you're looking for someplace different and old school, this is it."

  • "It was a party of 6 at my table. My food wasn't ready with the rest of my party, so the waitress decided to bring out an order that was ready in the kitchen, so I can eat with the rest of my party. I sent it back. I ordered some red beans and rice. It was so bland even after adding salt and pepper, but worst it was room temperature and so is another party member.I'm waiting for my order to be done and when it was serves to me,e veryone in the group is done with their plate. I didn't receive any complementy for the inconvenience. I alreadys refer people to RT's but nit anymore. I will never step foot in that terrible resturaunt again."

  • "My wife knows and loves good crab cakes. I did a search for the best crab cakes in Northern Virginia and RT's was given some high reviews. She had the crab cakes and they were delicious. I had the gumbo and it too was great. Prices are very reasonable and I suggest you make reservations. Our reservations were at 6:00 and there was no line or wait. We left around 8:00 and the place was full with a long line waiting to be seated."

  • "This is a great local restaurant with authentic food straight from New Orleans. Everything I have had hear has been great. I love the gumbo, shrimp and crab étouffée, and desserts. My husband loves all of the oyster dishes. Service is always good. Best Cajun food I have had outside of New Orleans."

  • "I found this restaurant on Yelp and was interested in trying it because of the seafood menu. Once we arrived, we realized it had a Cajun theme. Each of us was pleased with our food. There was not much of anything on the menu for gluten-free or dairy free, so my choices were extremely limited. Nevertheless, what I ordered tasted great."

  • "3 out of 4 of us had good meals, but one of the specials, "seared, blackened tuna," requested to be cooked rare, came back cooked all the way through and not good at all. We had no time to change bacause of tickets to the show at Birchmere."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at RT's. We were immediately greeted and offered a seating preference. Our server, Kat, was great. She was friendly and described the specials in great detail. Our drinks, appetizers and main courses were promptly delivered to our table and were delicious. Kat made sure that our beverage glasses remained filled and a manager stopped by to make sure that everything was okay. After our meal, Kat described the dessert offerings. Our selection was as delicious as the meal. We were in and out in less than an hour and a half. I will definitely eat there again."

  • "Living far from New Orleans, it is hard to find good Cajun cooking. RT's hits the spot when it is hard to get to Louisiana. Reservations are highly recommended. We used open table and were seated immediately; others waited during prime time on a Saturday night. We tried two appetizers and two entrees and enjoyed them. We will definitely be back. The atmosphere is unassuming. Not fancy or pretentious..just plane good food! The Jack Daniel shrimp and Crawfish & Shrimp Beignets! My favorite was the beignet, nothing like what you would think, enough for two to share. The crawfish etioufee had good flavor and spice. We tried a blackened fish special--not quite as good as the other food. We can't wait to go back. Truly a neighborhood gem."

  • "I love RTs for the quiet atmosphere while I'm dining. This is the place. Even with the restaurant full, we were able to dine and converse at a whisper level. The bar and two separate dining rooms provided a feeling of privacy with comfortable ambiance. The selection of food allowed the foodies numerous choices all specially prepared, served hot and presented in a timely manner. Prices were moderate and competitive. Wine list provided a wide selection."

  • "My sister-in-law recommended RTs to us about a year ago. My husband took me there for my 50th birthday and it was great; the menu variety is great. I had salmon, and he had catfish - each of our favorites, and they did not disappoint. Of course, in return he wanted to go for his birthday. He got his other favorite meal - gumbo ! Another great choice. This place is our best kept secret that we will share with a select few. We made reservations as we knew it was going to be crowded on a Friday night; surprisingly it wasn't which was great. You've got to try it for yourself."

  • "RT's is more than just a great neighborhood restaurant. It has the best Cajun food in the region, with a well-varied menu. Get the lamb chops if available. Be sure to have the She Crab soup or, better yet, the Alligator Stew, which is outstanding. To pick just a few dishes, the several etouffes are terrific, as is Death By Gumbo. Fresh ingredients, well-cooked in an authentic Cajun style. Plus, it's quiet enough so that you can converse at normal volume and hear what others are saying. The service is great. I've been going to RT's for years, and have never had less than an excellent meal there."

  • "great seafood, good service, can't be beat!! First time at your place, and It was GREAT. Food was excellent, wait staff responsive and had good suggestions. Would highly recommend your place to others. I booked at RT's due to a friend recommendation. He said great things about the food. I will definately be coming back. I took my friend to RTs for her birthday, she had your veal special. Absolutely loved it. I had the stuffed shrimp. I wanted to lick the plate. We each had deserts which were wonderful, I had the chess pie and she had the bread pudding. Really enjoyed dining at your place. Thanks."

  • "Excellent food, with great jambalaya/ Server was very courteous and sincere, but provided my wife real coffee rather than decaf so she spent the entire night up watching old movies. I'd bring a large group here with no problems, as the restaurant seems to accommodate them well and in a fashion that does not disturb other diners."

  • "The food we had was really good. However, my wife commented a few times that the decor didn't make the place feel like a place she would want to stay and have another drink. We will definitely be back for the food, just not a good "date night" location."

  • "We went to RT's for Alexandria Restaurant Week. Although they offered a limited Restaurant Week menu, the selections were good. I started with the Shrimp and Crawfish Beignets - excellent. Followed this with a Andoullie Cruste Mahi Mahi - excellent. Ended with a bread pudding dessert - excellent. The portions were large - I woung up taking home half my entree and half my dessert. Our server was very gracious and accommodating. If you like seafood, this is the place to go. If you like Cajun, this is the place to go. If you like Cajun seafood, this is definitely the place to go. I hope you enjoy RT's as much as I do."

  • "This is one of my favorite places to eat. Love the great creole/cajun dishes! Frankly, RT's food tastes better than the dishes I've had in New Orleans…the capital of creole/cajun food. My husband and I enjoyed the Alexandria restaurant week 3-course menu. We started with the 3-way oysters appetizers, followed by the shellfish etoufee for me and my husband had the mahi mahi dish. For dessert, we both had RT's famous bread pudding. Overall, we enjoyed the meal and service!"

  • "We were a little unsure of what we'd find inside but we were pleasantly surprised. Great food and great service. The restaurant was filled with what looked like locals who have been coming there for 30+ years. We had the restaurant week menu and were really happy with our selections: she crab soup, seafood etoufee, short rib, bread pudding and chocolate mouse. The atmosphere isn't much to talk about as it looks like a mom and pop place that's been there forever but the food was good enough that we'll be back."
