  • "Great appetizers, drinks and food. Excellent service. Great choices in the menu too. Overall a great place to eat and take someone especial."

  • "Roy's is a great place for sophisticated Hawaiian influenced dishes in a classy environment."

  • "Always a great meal whether here or in Pebble Beach. Blackened Tuna is to die for, as are the ribs. Delish!"

  • "I took my sister and mom here for Mothers Day. There were 8 of us total with two kids. We came a bit early for aloha hour and the drinks we had were really good. I ordered the pineapple sangria, my boyfriend ordered the 1988, and my mom had a skinny margarita. It took a bit longer for the bartender to take our orders than I would have liked but the drinks made up for the wait. Our server was very courteous and did not "over-service" or "under-service" us. Not to mention, the food was delicious. Although, my sister and her husband did mention that the quantity was a bit small for the price."

  • "The food was good but a little expensive. The pot sticker was ok, didn't taste the lobster, but the poke, was delicious. The scallops were just ok, not tasty but The butterfish was good. We had chocolate soufflé which was good. Overall we felt the food was good but a little over price!"

  • "I've been to Roy's almost everywhere and this was my first venture to the SF location. My only criticism ever of Roy's was the locations of his restaurants. The only 2 standout locations I've ever been to were the Pebble Beach location at the Spanish Bay Inn and The Tavern at the Princeville Golf Course. Nonetheless, the food was amazing. Ahi appetizers were delish followed by the main course, "buttahfish" (pronounced as if with a Hawaiian accent)."

  • "It's been sometime since I've been there and found the quality of food and service had gone down. My prior experiences delivered a higher standard."

  • "I have had many lunches at Roy's over the years; usually, someone else makes the reservations so i have not been called on for a review until now. it is an excellent restaurant with great food, service that is both efficient and friendly and a large dining room that is very attractive and comfortable. The food is imaginative and well-prepared and it is possible for two or more diners to order enough appetizers and sampler plates to give a clear experience of the kitchen staff's expertise. I love it and look forward to my next visit."

  • "I felt it was very wrong to accept a reservation for 6:30 (made at 6:15) and then when we arrived on time, to explain we would have to wait for 1/2 hour for the table. It got worse. The hostess explained that they had a private party reservation for 40 so the usual number of tables were not available and "I guess we should have blocked Open Table""

  • "We had just eaten at Roys Rancho Mirage and it was 10 times better - food and service. The osso bucco was bland. The dinner plates were so hot that they kept cooking the food - my butterfish was mushy. Our coffee was served warm - NOT hot. We mentioned this to the waitress and our refills were also warm and NOT hot. This is the 3rd time we have been disappointed - we will not be back."

  • "My friends and I went to Roy's to celebrate a birthday and between the appetizers at the bar and our dinner in the restaurant area it was a night we won't forget. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful and all of the food was amazing. I would recommend this place for any special occasion."

  • "The food and ambiance at Roy's is always great, but their prices seem to have gotten much higher, recently. It is usually relatively quiet to allow for good conversation, unless the place is full. Then it gets a bit noisier."

  • "Hosted two others at Roy's. Since I've been to several other locations and liked the food and wine list, I figured it to be a no-brainer. It was. Food and service were excellent. The wine list, very large and has interesting finds, is a bit pricy. The noise level is a.bit high. Overall, a great place to host a business dinner."

  • "First visit was a very pleasant experience - food, service and atmosphere were all wonderful. Fish selection is quite varied and preparation of the butter fish was very tasty. Sufficient non seafood items are available for non fish lovers. Well worth a trip."

  • "Took my 2 1/2 year old along with new born. Lively restaraunt, great for kid noise and distraction. Parking is horrible in South Market business district. Impeccable service, great food, somewhat limited menu, nice wine list. Recommended, but does not compare to Roy's Pebble Beach."

  • "It was our first time here and it was beautiful. We loved the extra decorations and menu print out for Mom's birthday. The food was perfect and our drinks were great. I don't remember our waiters name. He was attentive when he was helping us, but he would disappear for a long time between ordering appetizers, drinks, and our main course. Our dinner ended up being 3 hours."

  • "Been here before, loved location, vibrancy and attention to detail by the team; however, food seemed bland - especially for the price. Might be a better idea to load-up on appetizers and skip entrees."

  • "FYI for vegetarians, ask for the vegetarian menu which is separate from the regular menu. I ordered the teriyaki Portobello mushroom from that, but I have to say I was disappointed. Way too sweet for me. But honestly, the waiter suggested a tofu dish and I probably should have listened. My partner did enjoy the fish entrée he had though. We had a bottle of California sparkling and I thought the price was reasonable. Service was courteous, but I found it odd I had to ask for an ice bucket for the champagne. The waiter just set it on the table and I asked for the bucket next time he came by. We were there to celebrate a birthday and they brought a nice complementary dessert. We liked the ambiance quite a bit. Classy but not fussy."

  • "The title of this review is admittedly simple, but fantastic sums up all aspects of this restaurant. The food is fantastic - prepared perfectly, fantastic flavors and fantastic presentation. Beautiful ambiance that somehow captures the island feel, while still being extremely professional and first class. I would go here all the time if I could - a fantastically executed restaurant in almost every way."

  • "During a recent vacation stay in San Francisco, we ate several fine restaurants. Roy's was the family favorite. All the dishes were unique and excellent. Plus, the service was top-notch. Would highly recommend."

  • "As much as I love Roy's in general, the SF location has gone downhill. Maybe it was because it was New Year's Day? I don't know but from the moment we walked in it felt different. first we were seated at possibly the worst table in the restaurant (we had reservations well in advance) and the restaurant was not full.-felt like we were sitting in the kitchen. I asked to be moved and they did move us - that was great. We ordered the spring rolls which were extremely greasy-I wanted to send them back but I didn't. I ordered the butterfish (which I always do) and it was totally different - not a good sear on the fish and extremely salty. Our server was borderline rude-I ordered a Hawaiian Martini first thing and she claimed I did not order it."

  • "My friends and I have parties here, especially for birthdays. Growing up in SF, my favorite Roy's has to be here of course. Yes, I've been to Hawaii's and Ko Olina, I still love SF. Even if I choose to dine with a girlfriend, my husband, or our kids, Roy's SF accommodates. Customer service is always stellar, I enjoy every meal. I love the variety of drinks and wines. Can't go wrong with Roy's SF, it's the place to be. I would choose to take my husband's clients here, and afterwards, enjoy a stroll around the neighborhood - many sights to see and things to do. Hands down Roy's of SF is my fave!"

  • "I always enjoy eating the delicious food at Roy's. Unfortunately, it's always so dimly lit inside for dinner that I feel like I have to strain my eyes to see the menu (and my eyesight isn't even that terrible!). It also took a very long time for food to be served, but fortunately, my party wasn't in a huge rush, so the food was worth the wait."

  • "We had our anniversary dinner there. We had a corner table for ourselves - quiet for a good conversation. The food is as good as the one in Big Island. Glad that we can enjoy it right at home without waiting for the next trip to Hawaii. Service was good. They also surprised us with a "Happy Anniversary!" dessert ."

  • "Having been to the Roy's in Hawaii I felt we had to see if the experience was commensurate so we decided to try it. While the food was certainly good, it didn't seem to be as extraordinary by comparison especially when compared against the plethora of other excellent options in San Francisco. That said, both of our meals were very good and the wine list was stocked with a few Napa Valley wines we had previously tried during our tours there which was a treat. At any rate if you are looking for a place you can expect to be good without being too adventurous you can rest assure Roy's will not disappoint."

  • "In August I took my daughter and her family to Yosemite, Sacramento and San Francisco on vacation, In san Francisco we dined a Roys Restaurant and we had an incredible dinner. We all had different appetizers, entrees, and deserts, and all were wonderful. The Valet parking made it easy to get in and out for the downtown area of San Francisco would have been hard to park our rented suv. The only thing that I would change is that you should get a table upstairs away from the bar if you want to talk or hear the people you are with for it is VERY loud downstairs, but all in all its a great restaurant that features Pacific - rim and San Francisco mix of food."

  • "The minute we walked in they gave us our table after we were running a little late. We were celebrating our 9th wedding anniversary and when we opened our menus there was a letter congratulating us and was very special. The food and service was exceptional and everyone was very nice even moving things up as we had to head to a concert. To top it off we were very full after our meal and passed on dessert but were surprised when the waiter presented us with a mini 9th anniversary dessert to top off a wonderful evening!, First Class!,"

  • "This is my go-to spot in the neighborhood for a celebratory meal or an amazing happy hour. The food is always delicious and fresh and the service is outstanding. The prix fixe is a great way to enjoy a 3 course meal at a reason price. The main courses are outstanding (try the Butterfish or the Filet Mignon) and the desserts are amazing (the molten chocolate cake is to die for). Staff was attentive and professional. I would recommend this restaurant for a private get-together, a corporate event or to just grab an excellent happy hour after work!"

  • "This was our third visit to the S. F. location and we remain pleasantly surprised that our high expectations continue to be met. We had the pleasure to meet Roy when he still had his Manhattan restaurant and were saddened when it closed. Roy operates terrific restaurants and we wish him continued success."

  • "We went to celebrate a birthday, and they provided three special extras for the celebration (I won't say what in case you are going for a special event-I want you to be surprised!) They were quite lovely surprises, and it made things extra special! I was impressed by the amount of birthday extras and the care that went into it! The food was very, very good. The seafood was wonderful. Sides were unimpressive, but I was going for the seafood and felt I got what I wanted there-fresh and delicious! Service was nice. I was hoping for more of a Hawaii feel in the atmosphere, though. I've been missing Hawaii lately and wanted to feel like we were back in Hawaii, but it didn't really have a "Hawaii" feel in there, which I missed."
