I have had the pleasure of dining at Roy's in three different states and I am pleased with the consistency. Although my favorite is the miso butterfish, I have sampled a variety of food and wine items and continue to recommend it to my friends. Thank you!

  • Good food despite kitchen hiccups

We love to go to Roy's whenever we visit SD. This night we took advantage of their Monday night prix fixe dinner. Our server was terrific - honest with recommendations. The hiccups started when we ordered our drinks and apps. Got our drinks promptly, but waited extraordinarily long for the apps. To their credit, drinks were comped. Apps were great (tuna poki and Korean ribs). Both butterfish and mahi mahi entrees were also great. More hiccups with dessert. Kitchen sent wrong one and chocolate souffle that was brought was overbaked. But two more perfectly cooked souffles were eventually delivered. The food is so good we will definitely return.

I have usually had an excellent experience at Roy's in various locations. However, this experience was sub-par. Although the service was very good, 3 of four of our party had terrible entrées. Two in our party ordered the braised spare ribs and they were so tough they were barely edible. Another in our party ordered a special, Ono, which was supposed to be done to a medium temperature. Unfortunately, it came well done and it, too, was tough. We did enjoy our desserts as they met the usual high standards.

We were not happy with the mustard sauce on the BBQ pork sandwich. It was BBQ! There was a hard stem in my salad and the bread we asked for was presented all dance, but came cold. One half of my rib (appetizer) was cold. The dessert with the luncheon special was made with what looked like ice milk instead of ice cream . Just not a good experience. Service great though.

Good was good but when the bill came almost every item was overcharged relative to the prices listed on the menu. On challenge the prices were adjusted but I only wonder how many customers were overcharged by not closely looking at the bill. This should not be the customers responsibility. I consider this to represent a serious service failure and as such cannot recommend this restaurant.

From the lobster potstickers to the light and fluffy malasadas for dessert, the meal was amazing. I had Roy's trio, three pieces of fish each with its own sauce and vegetable. My fellow diner had the fish encrusted in crab with a spicy mayonnaise. Both dishes were skillfully cooked, the presentations were very pleasing. The portions were just the right size, not overwhelmingly large. Definitely going back.

We've dined at other Roy's restaurant sites including Maui, this was the first time at Roy's San Diego. The MaiTai was not good at all. I was a little disappointed by the meal itself, just underwhelming and didn't match up to the meals we've had in Maui.

Our dinner was everything we could ask for. The Caesar salad was large and quite tasty. The crab cakes and the blood orange sauce while a little tangy were amazing! We both ordered the steak and shrimp and couldn't get over the size of the filet. 7 oz. plus 3 huge shrimp. We normally don't eat fancy desserts but the chef made us special bowls of fresh berries. The wait staff was helpful but not intrusive. Highly recommended.

Ambience, delicious and fresh seafood - these things well evident. That said, a terribly overpowering salsa overwhelmed the delicious infused flavors in the butterfish. The poke was wonderful, but all in all we thought it was very good but just shy of excellent.

We eat at this restaurant many times a year, but were a little disappointed this last time (10/12/14). I came in especially for the steak and lobster, teased by the image of the ad, but where was the lobster? Somewhere in the pop-sticker? Couldn't taste it! The wife got the Roy's Trio of fish and enjoyed it very much. We will both order it tonight (11/08/14) and not be disappointed.

Beautiful setting on the San Diego Harbor and the food was great too! Had the Mac Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi and it was just perfect. Possibly better than the same dish I had in Kauai 4 months ago and its tough to beat fresh fish in Hawaii. The fish was served hot, the way it should be. Drinks were just ok though. My husband had the Mai Tai and he didnt like the spicy flavor it had. Service was very good. Attentive but not overbearing. Would definitely go again.

I've been a fan of Roy's for years. Live in downtown San Diego. I have been to the la Jolla one a few times but tend to stay downtown near our residence. While looking up seafood restaurants downtown I was pleasantly surprised to find that all this time there was a Roy's right across the street in the marriott! I tend to avoid hotel dining but we dashed over and had an amazing dinner starting with my favorite, the crab and avocado roll with waygu beef on top. Amazing then the perfect butterfish in sizzling soy sauce, a Roy's signature dish Our waiter Joshua was excellent. Will always request him. Nothing like great food with great service

Short version: Can always count on Roy's for a great meal. Longer version: We travel extensively, including Hawaii, and Roy's is one of our favorite "go-to" places. The San Diego waterfront location was no exception. There was enough of a local San Diego flavor to distinguish from the other Roy's, and the food was excellent. Beef spare ribs, salad, Mahi-Mahi, and the Ono special - nothing left on the plate and we are not big people. Service from Chris was excellent. Yes we would go back. Nice view of the marina.

Not every restaurant pays attention to the comments in the reservation - some of the fancier restaurants I've been too seem ignore them. This was not the case at Roy's! They not only were ready for us with a "Happy Anniversary" greeting but were fantastic for our two year old son. His appetizer hit the table 30 seconds after we sat down and the chefs hat was a big hit. Roy's menu is fun and broad and the food was fantastic. A great night!

I was a little concerned about going to this Roy's due to its location at the Marriott downtown. I was able to valet park for $8 with the restaurant validation. Our meal was great, but our desert was so so. We had the lava cake (my favorite), but it was overcooked. They were very apologetic and offered to make us a new one which we declined. They took the desert off the bill and gave us a card for a future desert at Roy's. The management team there is excellent!

I would not recommend this Roys to my family or friends due to the fact the host staff seems to not want to Wow the guest as they were not busy but put a damper on our night. So sad that this is how restaurants treat patrons. I am an leader of a chain and will be sharing this story with my team in mtgs.
