Noisy near the bar. Appetizers were good. Entree was average to somewhat disappointing. There are better restaurants in the area for the same or less $. The first time we went to Roy's was about 15 years ago in Hawaii. I remember the food being much better back then. It is a high quality establishment and the hawaiian fusion style is interesting.
If you've been a couple of times, you will note that nothing has changed. The butterfish (fka Chilean Sea Bass) is still a bit too fatty and rich, the poke is good but not great. The soufles and pineapple upside down cake for dessert are good but not as sinfully delicious as they look. All in all, meh....6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Seafood with a Hawaiian FlairMisoyaki Butterfish. This is what Roy's is known for and for good reason. The fish is very juicy and tasty and the furikake onigiri (rice) is a nice touch. This dish and the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi are the only dishes that I order here. I'm sure the other dishes are just as good, but feel like a waste if I don't order one of these dishes when coming to Roy's. Both times they personalized the menu reflecting my daughter's name and congratulating her. Additionally they gave her a complimentary congratulatory dessert that was also personalized. The staff was fabulous and our waiter amazing. The food was even better than the last time. Came for pre-theater dinner. We were seated promptly, got to the theater with time to spare and never felt rushed. Easy walking distance to the Pasadena Playhouse. The bar is VERY popular with the locals as they have extended Happy Hour specials. Hard to hear anything due to the bar noise.
