  • "Good, not great Sunday night. Service was more than fine, knowledgable staff, who was very attentive from the moment we sat down until we left. The food was disappointing. Other than the pre fixe, and the Miso Butterfish, the trio and the filet were just ok. Serving size of the fish trio was more than fine, but all three seemed like they were missing something. The filet was not the best cut. We tried the fried rice and green bean sides and both disappointed. The fried rice, no taste, and the green beans, very little lop cheong, but tons and tons of chili peppers, more than a dozen. The desserts saved the meal, the upside down pineapple did not disappoint. The menu was quite different, with more choices - maybe less is better."

  • "Nice atmosphere, but I was served the wrong beer. The shrimps my wife ordered were very chewy and under cooked (still gray on the middle). We sent them back and they got it right but that kind of messed up our whole dinner experience as I was almost done with my food when my wife's oder came back. They offers little apologies...not sure if we will be back..."

  • "The original Roy's restaurants in the Hawaiian islands were absolute taste-treat delights. Unfortunately, the Pasadena version of this restaurant is a pale version of the original. The food was mediocre and lukewarm - nothing to write home about or return for. Pleasant outdoor patio and very good cocktails at Aloha Hour."

  • "I was sent a coupon for $25 off $50, so against my better judgement based off of my most recent visits to this Roy's, we decided to go. The edamame was so overcooked the inside plasticky layer came out every time you tried to eat a bean and the beans were mushy and dry. They've changed the menu and upped the prices. I got the short ribs and my friend got the miso butterfish. Both we're ok (edible), but not worth their $25+ price tags. It's sad because the Roy's in Hawaii and in Pebble Beach are amazing but I don't even consider the Roy's outside of those places to be the same restaurant. The service was attentive, however, after I told the server about the overcooked edamame he did nothing to remedy it, didn't even get us a new batch. :-("

  • "Nice place, good ambiance. Service & attention is great. Don't know if it was just this one time, but the food was not up to par. My wife's steak was so sinewy that it was almost inedible. Lot's of flavor just too tough. They offered to replace it but by then her jaw was tired, so she declined. My complaint was the rest of the food. Just way too sweet. We used to be regulars at the Downtown branch b4 it closed & I don't remember it being this sweet. I know Hawaiian food tends to be on the sweet side but this was waay sweeter than I remember it."

  • "Right down from the hospitality to the service to the food everything about this place was an excellent experience! The ambiance is nice and interior deco is trendy. Seats were very comfortable and table was an appropriate size. Hostess was friendly and even opened the doors. The waitress was welcoming and friendly. The food is excellent!! Had the Ahi Tuna Poke, Lobster Potstickers, Filet Mignon with lobster, and the pineapple upside down cake. Everything was absolutely delicious. I have eaten at many seafood restaurants and Roy's was spot on with each dish. Only complaint was the filet mignon. Cooked properly but I did not agree with the sauce they used for it. But as seafood goes, Roy's knows what its doing."

  • "we've dined at this restaurant on three separate occasions. the first, a birthday celebration, our food and service were pleasant, but not exceptional. our second visit, a visit on a whim, our food and service were acceptable, at best. our third visit, this past 4th of July, was to be our final time dining at this restaurant. the service was confused (waitress and bus-boy communication was entirely disjointed and uncomfortable), and our food was quite disappointing (steak was undercooked, yet tough; lobster was well-overdone, dry and chewy; fish was delicate, but highly over-seasoned). we are well accustomed to frequent fine dining, yet we have been progressively and consistently underwhelmed and disappointed by all accounts at Roy's."

  • "If you have eaten at Roy's in Scottsdale or Anaheim, you will be sadly disappointed in old town Pasadena. Our outdoor table service was comparable to your typical mediocre dinner chain. Lots of commotion, lots of service staff, but no training. Support staff handing around. Our food was auctioned, appetizer was poor, entre was very good, dessert was redone, and we were left looking at dirty plates for most of the night. The waiter was pleasant and accomodating. Overall a mixed bag in quality and presentation. For the money, I would recommend one of the local establishments that have patio dining."

  • "Twenty six years and counting. What a spectacular treat it still is to dine with the Yamaguchi crowd. Everything they do is better than one expects. Every visit--special occasion or not--becomes special because of an extraordinary wait staff and a kitchen that turns out nothing but wonderfully conceived and executed fare. Innovative is too limited a description for their menu. And, if you are a fan of cocktails, do not die before you have the Hawaiian martini. Trust me on this."

  • "45 min wait time betw appetizers and entrees. Asked waiter to see dessert menu ahead of time to figure out our options and instead of bringing it he told me he would bring it after entrees were served. Then entrees were served and he asked what we decided about desserts which is when I had to remind him that I needed to see the entire dessert menu to make a decision. We also had the worst seat at the restaurant. I will never ever return."

  • "My boyfriend and I are trying to not eat as much since we are going to Vegas for 4th of July weekend, but we still wanted to go out for dinner after work and since Roy's has outdoor dinning we decided to give it a try. It was our first time at Roy's and we LOVED it! The cocktail I tried was the Jalapeno Margarita - FANTASTIC!The Margarita went perfect with the amazing Lobster Potstickers appetizer! For the Entree we shared Roy's Trio which I still day dream about. The service was pleasant, our waitress was very helpful. The outdoor dinning was exactly the environment we wanted to be in after a long friday at work :-D"

  • "We've been to Roy's here in California and Hawaii. Can't beat the ambiance in Hawaii. The food is great but the servings are small. I loved how our server made it a point to ask if anyone had any allergies he should be aware of. Plus, he made a special trip to the kitchen to double check the ingredients. That's service! If the portions could be a little larger, I would definitely recommend this place."

  • "I want to first say I have been to this Roy's on numerous occasions but brunch was bad. First of all it started with all of my silverware, dishes and glass being dirty with stuck on food. Then the menu had horrible selection items and when I did get my food it was cold. The best thing I could say was the servers were great and made the experience better. I would not go back to eat there again the bad food was overpriced and bad!"

  • "This was our first time at Roy's, and we decided to give it a try since it was within walking distance of the Pasadena Playhouse after seeing a matinee. What a surprise to find a large, well-appointed interior with a quiet rear dining room behind the energetic, main front space. The wine list was not large, but well selected and reasonably priced. The 2011 Chassagne Montrachet was a perfect match to the incredibly delectable lobster pot pie. The service was impeccable, and the manager's personal greeting at the table was a nicely professional touch to make guests feel welcome and want to return. This is now our new favorite after theater dining spot in Pasadena."

  • "First time ever at Roys. Tried years ago in Hawaii and couldn't get in. We arrived for happy hour in the bar and tried a few appetizers which good. Table for dinner was in another room where it was moderately quiet and good for conversation. Service was great and waiter was helpful in making suggestions. Calamari was good and had alittle bite. Shrimp salad and blackened ahi was wonderful. Will definitely go back!"

  • "My husband and I had our wedding reception at Roy's in Hawaii Kai 13 years ago and every year we go to Roy's for our anniversary dinner. The service has gotten worse over the years and this last visit was by far the worse. Our waitress took our order and never came to check on us. She neglected to tell us about desserts or give us a dessert menu. Not once did she ask whether or not we wanted dessert, coffee or tea. We had to tell her ahead of time that we wanted the Upside-down Pineapple Cake desert since we knew you have to put the order in in advance because it takes about 20 min to make. Very disappointing since the service at one time was impeccable. Don't know if we'll be going back next year due to declining service"
