We have never had a bad meal at Roy's. We shared the Caesar salad, rib-eye with mac N cheese and the pineapple upside down cake. Everything was DEE LISH; especially the mac n cheese which didn't sit in your stomach like a lead cannonball. Pineapple upside down cake with coconut ice-cream was the bomb!

We celebrated my wife's 65th B-day here. We all had the filet and it was great!. I also had the shrimp which was a nice added touch. They were nice enough to acknowledge her birthday by adding her name to the menu, proving a wonderful free desert and a photo as a keepsake. Excellent job as usual! Keep up the good work!

I took my daughter and a friend to Roy's NB for her birthday celebration. We did the same last year and the experience was much better than this time. Even though I told them it was a birthday celebration when I made the Open Table reservation there wasn't the same level of attention as in past years. We were also disappointed with the new menu. There is much more emphasis on the wine selection than the food. I prefer the "old" Roy's and hope they go back to the details that made them a favorite in past years.

We have been to Roy's on many special occasions and loved the atmosphere and the food. This visit provided neither. From the reception, to waitress and food, we were very disappointed. We felt rushed. The waitress was stretched thin and it showed, her responses were curt and a little surly. The canoe appetizer gave me indigestion. I usually order butterfish, which I love, but decided to venture out and try the scallops. Three were on top of a little glob of mashed potatoes and had a very odd flavor. Even the pineapple upside down cake was not tasty. We were in and out of the restaurant in about an hour, the restaurant was brightly lit and noisy. The only positive entree was the mixed shellfish which my husband ordered.

Roy's restaurant is usually always good and of course the service was first rate. This time my guess and I experienced food that was overly salty. I thought this was just my meal but after speaking with other guests later I found out that a lot of meals were very salty and the mahi mahi fish was dry.

Ambiance was that of a nice chain restaurant, nothing like ambiance at Roy's at inn at Spanish Bay. Food was disappointing too. Complimentary lobster potstickers were over fried and dry. They were out of ahi so substituted mahi mahi on a three course special. The apple cake dessert tasted stale, and our decaf was tepid. They quickly made fresh hot decaf.nrhe service was very attentive.

The food was excellent. The waitress interrupted our conversation frequently, apparently unaware that we were intensely consumed in a topic. She tried to talk us our of our choices, which we became insistent upon. The dessert course was embarrassingly late (40min). The manager offered to comp the desserts which was not done. They have a nice Monday Night special (starter, entrée, dessert for $36).

Sad to say but this will be our last visit to Roy's Newport Beach. We've had consecutively three disappointing dinners here. For the same price, there are numerous establishments in OC that give you exceptional food, service and wine. My husband and I ordered the mahi mahi and butterfish. Both were under seasoned and tasteless. The dishes came with a couple boiled potato slices, some rice, a quarter of a bok choy and four old shriveled asparagus spears that should have never been served. Our waitress seemed irritated that we didn't get the soufflé she recommended. Does she need to meet a quota?? The restaurant felt old like I was at my grandma's house. In fact, I think I would have had a better meal at here place.

We had a reservation, had to wait 20 minutes for the table anyway. Once seated it took more than 10 minutes to get the menu. Appetizers arrived after 40 minutes after ordering and the place wasn't even crowded anymore. Tuna tartare was flavorless and oily at best. I had requested no rice but extra veggies with my seared tuna. Dish arrive with no rice but no extra veggies. Wife had ebi roll that was overpowered by the cream cheese. Waste of time and money! There are so many good restaurants in the area so there is no reason for us to ever visit Roy's again.

Came here for a birthday dinner with my husband and had a wonderful time. The waitress we had was awesome and super friendly. The staff was great from the minute we walked in. Husband had the Roy's Trio and the butterfish was delicious. I loved the salmon and also the truffle bacon mac and cheese. So good. Oh and don't forget the chocolate cake worth the wait.

I made the mistake of ordering a steak at a seafood restaurant. I ordered a New York steak medium-rare. When I cut into the meat, I found that it was nearly uncooked in the center. I almost never send food back, but it was really rare. When it came back the second time, it was well-done! It was so well-done that I couldn't eat it. This was the first time in my life that I had a steak in front of me and didn't eat it. This was particularly disappointing since it was my birthday dinner. The waitress was aware of the problem and I thought that Roy's would remove the steak from the bill, but no luck. Roy's has some work to do if they want to compete with Fleming's, Wildfish and Mastro's.

We've been to Roy's many times, and most of the locations in California, but always come back to our favorite here in Newport Beach. We started this meal off with the Lakanilau Roll, and decided to just stick with appetizers for this night's meal. We ended up with 5 outstanding appetizers, our favorites which were the above mentioned Lakanilau, as well as the super flavorful Ebi roll. The best part is that we got to try so many wonderful things, and our mouths just kept exploding with different flavors as the night progressed. Add in those wonderful Hawaiian Martini's, and it just made for a super fun night! Our server was super sweet and very attentive, as were all staff we came in contact with. Ended with Chocolate Souffle, perfection!

The service has been progressively declining at Roy's, and the three hour dinner we had last night is one indication. Not sure if it's the kitchen, or staffing ratios, but with only 2/3 's of the restaurant full (further evidence?) it does cause one to wonder... Some of the classics remain- classic: Maui wowie shrimp salad, calamari, blackened ahi with mustard sauce.... And some of the locale-specific creations (au poi re scallops, and Opah) were definitely palate pleasing, albeit a bit heavy handed on the richness scale to the point of overpowering these otherwise delicate seafood choices. A personalized cover sheet and candled cupcake were both nice touches to a celebratory birthday dinner. I hope this Roy's doesn't become complacent...

We have been coming to Roy's for as long as it's been in Fashion Island. Many a great time/meals were had during this time. Recently it appears to be slipping into the shadow of what it once was. Made a reservation through open table requesting a quiet booth, we were seated right next to a table of 10 business people. The restaurant was 1/4 full! Food was just ok, seems the menu has less fresh fish than in the past with even less less creative preparations. Wine list is very weak yet still pricy. There are too many fine restaurants in OC that surpass the current level of food and service provided by Roy's. Even using our $25 amex gift card we still felt the value was less than what we expected. Hope this helps get Roys back on track.

Sunday, my husband and I were enjoying happy hour/dinner. We had our tab going for two & I specifically asked the bar attendant to keep out tab separate from my brother +3 who was joining us 1.5 hours later. Once we asked for our check, I realized that she split the check in half. All together, our tab was under $90 & she handed me a check for $176, while my brothers was over $200. This incident turned out to be very ackward & uncomfortable. I discreetly called her over to remind her that my check was just for me & my husband. Loudly she stated; "I know, that's why I split the check in half". I was mortified, my husband was umcortable & my brother was upset. Why put someone through this embarrassing situation? Not a Roy's experience.

Love Roy's and have eaten at many locations....the meal tonight in N.B. was one of the best as we ordered off of John's (the Chef's) special menu. Meal was awesome for both my wife (Chef's scallops) and myself (Ono with dynamite sauce... was supposed to be opah but the had sold out of that and substituted ono (which was great as well). Only sad thing was the molten chocolate souffle which we also love had no molten in it (overcooked), so it was just a warm chocolate cake... if it still did not taste so good, it would have been more of an issue, but even cooked through, it was still yummy!

Received a $25 gift card from Roy's and decided to take them up on the offer. We ate there during Newport Beach Reataurant week a year ago. The food is delicious and the service very good. I cannot have ice water and they made sure that my water glass was always filled without any ice. I have never had a restaurant take this much care. However, it is very expensive. The gift card barely made a dent in our bill. Very enjoyable but strictly for special occasions.
