Roy's La JollaVery nice all around restaurantVery nice all around restaurant with excellent food.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMRoy's is now Roy Yamaguchi'sRoy's is now Roy Yamaguchi's with a change of emphasis from Hawaiian to Pacific Crest. Nonetheless the food was great and service OK. We had Roy's trio and was not at all disappointed.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dining place for largeGreat dining place for large group, as the noise level was extremely high.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMRoy's a nice experience. The food was great...the signature appetizer the Canoe for 2 is a great starter and is filling. The service was excellent and your water glass was never empty. The waiter and staff stopped by at the right times to clear plates and ask how you were going. A nice experience.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMSpectacular!Service was spectacular, couldn't have been improved upon!4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Bar area was very loudThe Bar area was very loud but other than that the Food and service were great!4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMThe new look from the renovationThe new look from the renovation and menu are great.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was our first visit,This was our first visit, and was a special occasion, and they made it special. Occassion was noted with a special insert in the menu.
The food had wonderful presentation, and well balanced flavoring. Nice wine list. We will be back.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMMade a reservation late onMade a reservation late on a Saturday afternoon for that same evening for my husband and me. Ordered from the April Prix Fix menu. My husband got the shrimp with papaya, steelhead trout and chocolate soufflee dessert. It was 3 for 3. I ordered the pork belly appetizer, steelhead trout and bread pudding. The pork and bread pudding were terrible. I didn't finish either of them. The fish was delicious. We had a good bottle of wine for a reasonable price. The specialty drinks looked very good. Even had chocolate martini on the menu for dessert drinks. I sometimes order that at regular bars and they don't have the ingredients. Our waiter was great. Even brought flyer with promo offering prix fixe on Mondays. Overall would recommend.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistently great!Roy's is very consistently good. This they have a seasonal prix fixe which we take advantage of and this location even has a pick your own prix fixe on Mondays that they do on many months. We had the hanger steak and the Thai chicken both of which were excellent. Their fish dishes are also generally good especially the miyosaki butterfish which is one of our favorites. Don't miss the molten chocolate cake for dessert. This location also expanded its bar area so make sure to take advantage of the $6 happy hour specials.4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMThe renovated Restaurant isThe renovated Restaurant is fantastic. We love our good old favorites on the menu but, am looking forward to return again and try out some of the new menu options.4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMSmoked Wagu under glass? WOW!Back again to introduce another first-timer to Roy's. He was absolutely blown away. Said it was the best meal he'd ever had! Apps first (the always impressive Szech Ribs & Veggie Spring Rolls) then our table had the Salmon w/Ponzu, the Short Ribs and THE most spectacular Smoked Wagu steak ever! It not only melted in your mouth but the presentation under a glass dome that was filled with smoked and uncovered at the table was Over The Top! A MUST try! - John & Beth4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMLike the renovationsEnjoyed the atmosphere following the renovation. I liked the open kitchen and bar area looked nice (we did not go to the bar) and was appropriately separated from the restaurant. I like the new look and feel though a bit dark where we were sitting. All staff were wonderful. Food was great but needed more of it on the plate. Vegies were a bit undercooked but seasoned perfectly. Enjoyed the edamame with seasoning as an alternative to bread at the start of the meal. Wine list is good with mix of expensive and affordable offerings, wines by the glass and half bottles. Dessert was nice...lava cake souffle was lava (not over cooked) but the ice cream scoops could be bigger (too small like other parts of the meal). Overall, nice experience.3/26/2013 12:00:00 AMService Above & Beyond! Mahalo! Can't thank the staff enough for making adjustments for us. Our scheduled reservation was for 8:30 with our out of town business guests but their presentation went longer than expected. The staff at Roy's was SO accommodating as I kept changing our ETA. We finally arrived at 9:30 and they treated us as if it were 6:30! To help out the kitchen, we just ordered some apps and sushi...but it was ALL fantastic! We were never rushed and they made us feel at home. Our guests were blown away at the food, decor and service!
Mahalo Nui Loa to Matt for taking such good care of us! It's no wonder Roy Yamaguchi's is our favorite place! - John & Beth3/26/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was our first time thereThis was our first time there since "Roy's" became "Roy Yamaguchi's". Longer name and higher prices have not translated into a better experience. There was a real disconnect between some traditional Roy's favorites and newer dishes that were underwhelming. The beet salad in particular was comically deficient in scope (four thimble-sized pieces of beet), texture (overrun with frisee), and taste (no goat cheese as advertized). Fish dishes were good, but the very incomplete menu descriptions and careful overviews by an excellent server did not mention that some are served without a starch and could readily qualify to be called Skinny Fish to go with the Skinny Cocktails (150 calories). Of course the skinny cocktails don't cost $33.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMTruly fine diningWe were celebrating my daughter's birthday! Everyone made her feel so special! The food was beautifully prepared and each dish was more exceptional than the last. We have many happy memories from other dinners and occasions celebrated at Roy's, but this particular dining experience was outstanding. The ebi roll, the short rib appetizer, the fish trio and the pork shank were all exquisite! The desserts are out of this world! All of the staff, were knowledgeable, very friendly and attentive. Can't wait for our next visit!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMIsland Style-Enjoy !!Food was excellent . Hawaiian martini excellent. ASIAN-SEAFOOD, great flavor, creative dishes.Island style..like Hawaii !!3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMPlease know I normally goPlease know I normally go for Happy Hour at Roy's with my co-workers. I chose dinner this time since I was having dinner with my boyfriend and a very good friend of mine. Our server John was delightful, he made sure we were taken care of. I do have to admit the menu is very pricey for the entrees we ordered. We can enjoy a great dinner at any of Cohn Restaurants for the price we paid and the servings are fully proportioned. Overall we had a great time as I wanted my boyfriend to experience the ambiance at Roy's since he has never been here. I think we're going to stick with the Happy Hour for future reference. Roy's would be more for special occassions. Lastly, Chef Robert came out to greet us which made us feel like VIP's. Excellent staff!3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went to a special eventWe went to a special event meal that marked the renaming of Roy's to Roy Yamaguchi's. It was a busy night with a number of chefs from other Roy's locations. I was impressed at how well the evening went with so many patrons and chefs in the kitchen. The meal was superb and the wine pairings were spot on. The remodel of the restaurant with expanded bar area is a great improvement, though the noise level remains high. Roy's remains one of our favorite restaurants both here and in Hawaii.3/14/2013 12:00:00 AMLa Jolla Roy's is very goodWe have been to many Roys in CA and Hawaii and this one is very good, just not as good as the one in Pasadena. The flavors were still delicious, some of the portions were smaller for the same dishes. Overall still a very good experience with very good service. Looking forward to the new Pacific Rim concept.2/16/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Kitchen in San DiegoAmazing food, great atmosphere, and friendly service all around. One of the best meals I've ever eaten, and certainly the best sushi I've ever eaten. I could have tasted nothing but sashimi, but I would have missed out on so much more! I was really impressed with the fusion of truffle elements into different dishes. You'll definitely miss out if you don't order the butterfish. The staff was great, from Robert and team in the kitchen who came to check on us, to Tim, our waiter, who was very knowledgeable about all kinds of spirits and kept our glasses full. If you only have one night in San Diego, this is your spot. If you're debating at all, trust me, it's worth the drive from the Gaslamp.1/1/0001 4:00:00 PM
