Diner Reviews
  • "Hawaiian Fusion.Lots of fish with interesting reductions. However, be very careful with what you choose. Our lobster roll and shrimp salad appetizers were quite good. The feta and capers in the latter were so overwhelming, however, that the shrimp and salad part needed a ton of water to reduce the salt on the palette.Butterfish excellent.Lobster pot pie just atrocious.Gummy pastry, tasteless lobster (huh, how is that possible), overwhelming onions, no English peas, gluey sauce.Just screamed of pre-assembled in the casserole, refrigerated for days and popped in the oven to order.White chocolate cheesecake dessert excellent.Overall a good dining experience.BTW, your car is held hostage for $5 for the hotel...plus valet. Self-park may be more."

  • "Christopher the Manager was very attentive. the waitress asked how the calamari was and we said OK. She must have told the Manager as he approached the table and wanted to know what was wrong. It was chewy. He told us of all our options which were more than we needed. After this - the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi and the Ahi were "phenomenal". We had been there about a year ago and the quality of food had really deteriorated. BUT Roy's is back !! Definitely will be going back , because of the food and Christopher."

  • "I chose Roy's for my birthday celebration. I like it because you can have a nice dinner with friends in a quiet restaurant and be able to have a conversation. When my husband made the reservations he told them it was my birthday, they gave me a bd card signed by several of the staff."

  • " I love going to Roy's! We have been to several locations throughout the country. This location continues the tradition of excellent food. The staff is kind and helpful with the menu and choosing wines. Our waiter even had a little time to talk to us about the area. I had the butterfish which is my favorite. It was fixed to perfection. My husband had the grouper and said it melted in his mouth. It was a wonderful evening to have great conversation. We did not have the lava cake but it is my favorite also. I highly recommend Roy's."

  • "The server was great! We ordered the shrimp & pork potsticker appetizer and it was very good, the sauce had a nice kick to it. The calamari was a bit chewy. The breading didn't stick to it well, but the basil dipping sauce was delicious. However, I wouldn't get it again. The fish trio was excellent! And the filet & lobster was great too, a little over done, but still had great flavor & tenderness. We also tried the truffle mac which was very good! I'd recommend coming here, just skip on the calamari."

  • "Our server was outstanding. The food was incredible. We love the Maui Wowie Shrimp Salad and would make the trip just for the salad! Everyone here does everything possible to make your visit perfect."

  • "We were looking forward to a fabulous dinner as we were staying at the JW Marriott in Phoenix for a Staycation over July 4th week-end. We have eaten at Roys and recommended to some friends who drove up to meet us. Our drinks and appetizers were very good but the main course, a fish entree (Ono) was not cooked properly and we had to send it back twice. The first time it was very overcooked and tough / tastless. The second time it was barely cooked. Our server agreed but by that time we decided not to try a third time. Overall we were very disappointed with Roys"

  • "Very disappointed again. Thought we would give it another try since our visit in January which was also mediocre. I had the Alaea Salt Crusted Bone in Ribeye, it was tough and fatty. My wife had the Misoyaki "Butterfish" which the Miso was so overpowering. Could not taste the fish. I gave this a fair review based on the 25 plus times we have dined here in the past. Almost tempted to give it poor for service and food."

  • "We took 89 yr old Mom for her birthday. She was given a card by the staff and received a special dessert. The lobster and filet dinner special was excellent. However, we were not told that you only get the lobster & filet, no potato & no veggies. The lobster pot stickers were included with the special and they were also excellent. When we were seated the wait staff came by right away and during the meal the assistant waiter was attentive with ice tea refills and clearing the table. That is until the main course was served and then service fell off and they disappeared. It was not crowded so they were not busy. We had to flag down a different server to place dessert order. Our waiter just fell short at the end of the meal. Would recommend"

  • "Their dress code is horrible, so be prepared for flip flops, tee shirts and shorts in, what used to be, a high class restaurant. Food, however, is outstanding. Also, you will pay for parking regardless of them stamping your ticket!!"

  • "I have dined here many times when ever I am in Phoenix for a convention at the JW. Food and service is always great and my overall restaurant experience is always great. This visit I must say that the portion size of my mail course ( Butter fish ) was way to small. The entree was excellent, just way to small a portion to satisfy me for dinner."

  • "After a visit to Roy's on Kauai last month I vowed to never eat at a Roy's again. But a traveling companion wanted to eat here at desert Ridge this week and I reluctantly agreed. What a pleasant surprise! We ate outside and weather was perfect. Myself and another had the Chef special Ono cooked med-rare and it was excellent. Best fish I've had in a long time. Another companion had the three fish special which he also remarked was excellent. We couldn't have been more pleased. Especially for these three critical people. It just shows not all Roy's are the same."

  • "I have been to the Desert Ridge Roy's multiple times over the years. Whether for business or personal, they always are impressive. Unfortunately, not on Mother's Day. Our service was VERY slow, and the top-dollar fish entres were all COLD. I still recommend Roy's at this location for the beauty of the grounds, but my family and I will not be visiting for another holiday event. "

  • "My wife and I fell in love ever since visiting our first Roy's 12 years ago in San Francisco to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. As frequent vacationers to the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, we were fortunate to frequent the Roy's at Desert Ridge inside the JW Marriott Resort. This location has an outstanding patio location which is great for dinner or even the Aloha Hour. Very memorable for any special reason, even if its just to enjoy a great meal."

  • "It seems as though things have slipped a bit, especially service. We made a reservation weeks in advance for our anniversary and yet we were not able to sit outside on the patio. I think they have turned it into a "hotel restaurant" and not the unique and top quality restaurant it used to be."

  • "Dined at Roy's on Maui a lot over the years. We were hoping Roy's at Desert Ridge would live up to our expectations and it didn't disappoint. The Butterfish was as moist and tasty as ever as was the Ahi Tuna. Will definitely return."

  • "We haven't eaten at many Roys throughout the country in the islands; this particular meal was not up to their usual standards. Service however was excellent."

  • "We had dinner at Roy's while staying at the JW Marriott with our kids. The servers were very friendly and attentive, almost too much so. (They were very eager to clear our plates even when we were not done eating, yet.) Roy's was also very kid friendly, which we don't always expect at a fine dining restaurant. The kids' menu offers entrees like shrimp tempura sushi roll, teriyaki salmon, pasta and chicken fingers (something for every palate). It also comes with a vegetable and quesadilla appetizer platter and an ice cream sundae. My only complaint was that my sea bass came out burnt (black and crispy). The kitchen prepared another, which caused the rest of the family to wait for me. My husband enjoyed his ono, which was well prepared."

  • "Our family has been to Roy's several times but this time our experience was not so great. The receptionist was not so happy and even rude and sat us next to a party in the back room with a party of 15 that were extremely loud. Our waitress did not even have the correct items that they were serving on the menu for the evening. It was my daughters birthday and they brought her a special dessert before they even asked us what we wanted for coir desert. I would not go back to this resturant as they are many others in the area that are around just as good and more enjoyable for the evening."

  • "Had to try Roy's after reading reviews. Stayed with chefs creations. Found food to be of very good quality and innovative. The only thing that was truly exceptional from my perspective, was the ribs on the appetizer plate. My wife loved her seafood pot. I had the Ono fish and found it to have a very fishy taste. Not as fresh as I would have liked. Service was amazing. They really catered to our children, who had a hard time finding what to eat off of the menu. [my children are picky]. I would go back and stick with only meat or poultry next time."

  • "We have been to Roy's many times and always loved it. Unfortunately this last time was ruined by a horrible service experience. Our waitress seemed to have very little knowledge of the menu. She was rude and seemed very put off by our 2 children (who were well behaved). It was Easter weekend so the restaurant was full of families with kids. She seemed aloof and couldn't answer any of our questions about the menu and acted as though she was irritated throughout our experience with her. Luckily the food was excellent as always. "

  • "Excellent food, great for business dinners and special occassions! We live in the area and celebrate anniversarys/birthdays here often. My work holds our annual conference at the hotel, and I have always entertained customers at Roys and not been dissappointed! It can get loud if there are alot of people, but its worth it!!!"

  • "Great happy hour (Aloha Hour). Order 3 appetizers and call it dinner. Or, have dinner, which is terrific. I had the braised short ribs with mashed potatoes and a rich gravy. My wife had the butterfish. Hard to say which was better. The new dessert, a light carrot cake, was really special."

  • "We come here about 4-5 times a year. The food is consistently good as are the drinks. The serice is also generally very good. Perhaps most important is how they really cater to young kids: kid menu, kid cups, kid appetizer and desert were on the house!! We will be back. And we really like that the menu changes occasionally now to add variety for regulars."

  • "Loved our dining experience at Roy's in the JW Marriott Desert Ridge. The service was excellent. Very attentive waitress and servers. Food was very good. Portions were a good size but not overly generous. I would recommend trying a couple of different appetizers and splitting the desserts as well. We stuck with the chef's picks and found them very tasty."
