Diner Reviews
  • "I've eaten at the Roy's in Kauai, and to my surprise, the Roy's Chicago was much better. The only thing that was disappointing was the slow service, but the food more than made up for that. My wife ordered the butterfish which she has had many times in the past. Normally outstanding, this time, it wasn't as good. I went with the braised short ribs and they were melt in your mouth. Best short ribs I've ever had. To end it, you must go with the flourless souffle, it is outstanding. You would never guess it was gluten-free. Also, their gluten free menu is one of the best."

  • "The food at Roys is consistently amazing. The fish is always cooked perfectly, never overcooked. Presentation is always good, and the host and waiter/waitress are always accomadating."

  • "We always make a stop at Roy's when in Chicago. It is one of favorite places. Great good, excellent service and a fun place."

  • "With the steamed edamame brought to table with our water, the dining experience of "each bite being a flavorful combination" that we were searching for began. Perfectly done, fresh scallops on beds of crispypork belly with fennel. Soft, flakey white fish enveloped in a sweet coating paired with spiced rice. Our desserts were a incredible finish. I look forward to a return trip to try the sushi."

  • "The room is very nice with a view out onto State and Holy Name Cathedral. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful. Drinks are unusual and very good. The butterfish was delicious. Desserts are also very nice. Had the pork rib appetizer also excellent. My friends and I enjoyed the meal, service and drinks. We would go again."

  • "Roy's is our favorite and of the Roy's locations, Chicago is our favorite. We were a little disappointed to get a table against the kitchen wall for an anniversary dinner. The main part of the dining room is quite lovely. The mac crusted mahi lobster cream sauce was not as flavorful as on previous occasions but the Hawaiian martini rocks. Also, the edamame wasn't quite hot or seasoned enough this time. We will be back though as I assume we just had a bad evening. The staff and service are friendly and professional."

  • "My husband & I went for a spur-of-the-moment night out. Beautiful restaurant. Drinks were great--sophisticated takes on some pretty sweet flavors. We had the Mango Mojito & the 1988. Both were sweet, but less so than we had feared, which was just right. Complimentary edamame--great idea. Lobster potstickers--wow. Their signature dish, the butterfish, was superb; I'd get that again. The short ribs were also very flavorful, though they cut the meat with the grain, which makes it kind of stringy to eat. But the sauces for both dishes were wonderful. We shared the chocolate souffle, which was one of the best I've ever had. They're not kidding when they say that lots of restaurants offer a souffle but nobody does it better. Obamas like it too!"

  • "Roy's is a reliable choice for really delicious Hawaiian-Asian fusion seafood, although the meat dishes we have tried have also been very good. Whether your taste runs to sushi or grilled Mahi-Mahi, Roy's offers interesting preparations full of color and flavor. Service has always been excellent. Usually full and a bit noisy because of it, but it is the sound of people enjoying good meals."

  • "Have heard wonderful things about the food at Roy's for years, and it did not disappoint. Tried the lobster dim sum per the server's recommendation- so good! Excellent sushi roll and mahi mahi main course. Great service. All positive things to say- will definitely be back!"

  • "I want to start by saying the food was outstanding. The service was another story, and was terrible. Our waitress needed a GPS device in order to locate our table as it seemed she forgot about us on many occasions. It took close to 50 minutes to get our appetizers which were just salads, and we did not get the main course up until an hour and 45 minutes into the night. Thank you for the drinks and dessert, but seriously that's not why we came to dine at the restaurant."

  • "While the food was good. It was a bit pricey for the food that we received. A 4 course meal for around $100 per person. To bad they didn't have the regular menu for Valentine's Day. Had to do the preset menu."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "We went there for a Valentine's day dinner and wasn't very impressed with the food. It was bland and the only thing we actually enjoyed was the edamame."

  • "Surprisingly quiet. Service was outstanding. Even wrote them a thank you card for taking special care for my girlfriend's dish because she can't have gluten or dairy. Food was awesome. Fish trio something or other was a hit. Sushi app was average should have went with something else. Don't let the chain of Roy's fool you. very unique and will be back!"

  • "Second time I have been here and it just keeps getting better. The service is fantastic. I ordered the Butterfish which I had in Hawaii. I didn't think it could compare with that and it surpassed it. I have seldom had seafood as good as this. My husband had the scallop dish which was equally as good. I cannot wait to go back!"

  • "I booked this reservation based on Open Table reviews alone, and I must say we had an amazing time. Our waiter, Nick, was absolutely superb. We received recommendations based on types of fish we liked, and the food did not disappoint!! The pork belly dumplings are seriously a MUST, in addition to the slaw that came with the shrimp appetizer. The main courses were excellent as well - upon hearing how much we liked the sauces that accompanied our dishes, Nick brought us each an additional side of it. We were celebrating our 3 year anniversary, and were pleasantly surprised with how personal they made our night. We started there at 830 and stayed until 11 since we were enjoying ourselves so much. Will certainly come back to Roys in Chicago!!"

  • "The restaurant was excellent, the server was great but I felt my portion was too small. I ordered a steak and the size was not listed. It is probably my fault for not asking bit I was surprised by what I received. My lady loved her food and the evening so it was a good experience."

  • "We were so disappointed in the quality of the food. We ordered from the special fixed price menu that was set for Valentine's Day, and each course seemed to get progressively worse as we continued with our dinner. I ordered the mahi mahi to be cooked medium, and instead I received an overdone, dry piece of fish. After sending the mahi mahi back, I then ordered the Thai chicken entree, which was under seasoned. My husband ordered the scallops, which were adequate, but in no way does adequate match the price that we paid for his food. The only redeeming factor of the dinner was the delicious coconut frappe cocktail. I don't think we will return here for dinner."

  • "My husband and I celebrated Valentines Day here. This restaurant is our favorite, so we celebrate many special occasions here. We had the Hawaiin Martinis and Maitais, both were delicious. For dinner, they had a four course prix fixe dinner. We enjoyed our dinner and dessert. We both had fish. He had the mahi mahi and I ordered the butterfish and for dessert we had chocolate soufflé and pear crisp. The soufflé was excellent while the crisp was not our favorite. Service was good even though they were busy."

  • "Had a very long wait prior to getting seated. Service was ok and food was just ok. Nothing spectacular. Appetizers were good and drinks were good. Realized that Lobster bisque had bacon in it when the waitress mentioned that to nearby couple."

  • "Our experience at Roy's was top-notch from start to finish. The entire staff was warm, friendly, + genuine. Our cocktails were delicious + beautifully presented. A friend in our party had allergies + was attended to graciously + with true care. Every single item our party of five ordered was absolutely scrumptious and plated beautifully. Our waiter Nick made excellent recommendations + knew the menu inside out. He was the last ingredient in our meal, with which we could not have done without. We would all come back here again + again. We also look forward to summer + enjoying eating outdoors. I highly recommend Roy's to anyone looking for an amazing dining experience. I think you will be as grateful as we were to have dined at Roy's!"

  • "We had a wonderful server and the food was delicious. We were initially seated next to a cold doorwall, could feel the draft coming in, so we requested to be moved. All they had available was the wine room. It was quieter on that side anyways. We have no complaints about our experience but did remark that the decor is quite outdated - more of a '90s or early 2000s feel. Dark red walls and really bad faux artwork. The place could use a bit of a revamp. The wine display however was beautiful."

  • "There is nothing better on the menu than the lobster potstickers and lobster dim sum, they are my two favorite dishes ever. My husband's favorite is the butterfish. Chandon by the glass and the chocolate molten lava cake are out of this world. Stellar service."

  • "Dinner Braised Beef short ribs were so tender so rich and delicous! Appetizer sampler was excellent. Great Ambience, excellent service! Cocktails....Yum!"

  • "My food was good, not great, but the rest of my party (5 people) really liked it. I thought the drink menu was good, not great, but the Mai Tai was very tasty. The rib appetizer was the highlight of the meal."

  • "Came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary - and it was also Super Bowl Sunday. The restaurant was rather empty as you might expect. This was our first time visiting here, although it had been on our "todo" list for some time. Lots of fish, and very interesting presentation. Everything was absolutely perfect."

  • "Hard to find good food in Chicago, if you don't want to pay $100+ per person, or wait for 3 months. This place has amazing food, but the service is pretty horrible. Our waiter came up to our table at least 10 times the entire time we were there. He would just come up and stand there, waiting for us to finish our conversations. It was extremely annoying and unnecessary. Their servers need to learn that the less they are seen, the better."

  • "Eight of us came here for restaurant week and to celebrate a few special occasions. The food was amazing with nice proportion sizes. It took along time to get our drinks and to even order. We were not in a rush, but I think the waiter was a bit scatterbrained with having a large table."

  • "We went for restaurant week in Chicago and this was our first time. Wait staff was friendly and knew the menu well. We sampled coconut shrimp Thai rolls and a spare rib for appetizers and these were all excellent. The rib meat was flavorful and delightfully tender. Main courses of Mahi Mahi and scallops over pork belly were both mouth watering perfectection. The fried young broccoli shoots that came with the fish were a surprisingly tasty side. Overall, We loved it. We will be back!"
