Diner Reviews
  • "Went here for my birthday and talk about feeling pampered. I took my husband, adult son and 88 year old mother. Eclectic group to wait on and they did a fantastic job. The wine by the glass was fabulous and the butter fish is hands down my favorite. They served complimentary appetizers before the meal. We had the dark chocolate desert and pineapple upside down cake afterwards and both were fantastic, in addition to the complimentary birthday desert. They even presented us with a framed picture of our group as we left. Love this place!!"

  • "I had been to Roy's before so I thought it would be a great place to take my husband for our 32nd Anniversary. He was very impressed and he loved it. The food was great, the waitress was wonderful and we had the best experience dinning that we have had in a long time! We WILL be returning !!!!!!!"

  • "My 3rd or 4th visit to Roy's (Chicago and Vegas), never disappointed by the imaginative food preparation, quality, taste, etc. In this particular instance, it is the service I would like to highlight. My wife mentioned to the server she was chilly. Within moments, the manager (Vince V.) was over to "make things right" - they had it adjusted in no time and he came back to check on us a couple times after. Small details make for a great dining experience!"

  • "We've been here several times now and have always enjoyed it. The wait for entrees was somewhat longer than usual this time but overall was a fun time. The sunfish is excellent!"

  • "It was really busy this Friday night. We had a reservation but all tables were filled. The host asked if we'd like to sit at the bar with a view of the kitchen. Plus, he would comp our first drinks and dessert! We agreed and had a great time. Food was delicious. Staff was attentive and friendly."

  • "The drinks are still good, but the food and the service is no where near what it once was. It's too bad."

  • "Everything was great from drinks to dessert. Can't go wrong with anything you order"

  • "The brunch menu special was disappointing compared to previous years. While I enjoy the entrees, the fact they were not part of the "2 course" menu surprised me and my family. Also we preferred the edamame to the sweet buns. The crowd for father's day was low and it felt empty. The manager forgot to bring us our fathers day gift card or greet us like we saw him do with other tables. We love the quality of dishes served but disappointed in this year's brunch menu. I recommend the food and drinks to all but encourage the management to reconsider their brunch menu."

  • "Have a new menu, more innovative than previous. Three different preparations were prepared very well."

  • "We have been to Roy's in Chicago twice and to the Roy's on Maui once and loved it every time. There service is fantastic and they make the appropriate amount of fuss if you tell them you are there for a celebration. We remembered some dishes we liked and they didn't disappoint. The waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful and made some great suggestions to accommodate special diets."

  • "Lobster potstickers, short ribs, a taste of the butterfish and a chocolate souffle. It doesn't get any better, and it's always great!"

  • "We've been to Roy's in Kauai so were thrilled to find it on the list of available restaurants when we wanted to book dinner with friends in Chicago. The ambience is completely different from that of Kauai. Instead of open walls, tropical foliage and water features, you get warm, understated elegance with an Asian touch. Both very nice. The food was very good though it would have to a step up to be phenomenal. Our waiter was on top of things from the moment we were seated and very accommodating. We brought our own bottle of wine - Roy's uncorking fee is a reasonable $20. Try the pineapple upside down cake with toasted coconut ice cream for dessert. It did reach the level of phenomenal!!!"

  • "The dinner entrées were both wonderful. We ordered the chocolate soufflé for dessert when we ordered our food. There was a 20 minute wait between our plates being cleared & dessert arriving We have dined at Roy's several times & this is the 1st time this has happened. The server blamed the kitchen which may have been understandable if the restaurant was busy but they had just opened When the dessert arrived it wasn't piping hot, the chocolate did not pour out and it tasted burnt. When the bill arrived we noticed an error Our server was too busy gabbing with a fellow server to pay attention to us.Our busboy had to get her. She had to finish her conversation before coming over. A special dinner ruined by bad service and a poor quality dessert."

  • "I really have loved everything that I've ever eaten here. The short ribs were succulent and tender, the mashed potatoes awesome, thai basil coconut martini was the stuff dreams are made of!!! I could devour the pineapple upside down cake every single day. I want to go back now"

  • "Went there for Mother's Day brunch. Menu options and price were reasonable. The complimentary cinnamon buns were great, but was complimentary because they wanted us to nib on something while we waited for almost 30 minutes for our main entree to get to the table? I've hosted private events there before and they do an excellent job. Food is delicious. Maybe the delay was just because it was a special occasion. "

  • "Plastic table clothes, dim room perehaps to conceal the wear and tear. Close it now or major re-do needed. Too bad uysed to be nice. Almost looks like they have run out of money."

  • "had the trio and disappointed in the salmon and the mahi mahi...the butter fish was great though. When we told the server that the other fish was dry, they did take the appetizer off the menu. It was a bit loud in there and lots of kids. "

  • "I always love to come to Roy's Restaurant and be greeted by friendly staff, enjoy the ambience and relaxing aloha atmosphere, get first-class service, and enjoy wonderful food. We really loved the lobster dumplings, and the coconut shrimp. Found the rib-eye to be cooked perfectly, and the fish trio was ono-licious! It's truly a fine dining experience adventure!"

  • "I've eaten at the Roy's in Kauai, and to my surprise, the Roy's Chicago was much better. The only thing that was disappointing was the slow service, but the food more than made up for that. My wife ordered the butterfish which she has had many times in the past. Normally outstanding, this time, it wasn't as good. I went with the braised short ribs and they were melt in your mouth. Best short ribs I've ever had. To end it, you must go with the flourless souffle, it is outstanding. You would never guess it was gluten-free. Also, their gluten free menu is one of the best."

  • "With the steamed edamame brought to table with our water, the dining experience of "each bite being a flavorful combination" that we were searching for began. Perfectly done, fresh scallops on beds of crispypork belly with fennel. Soft, flakey white fish enveloped in a sweet coating paired with spiced rice. Our desserts were a incredible finish. I look forward to a return trip to try the sushi."

  • "The room is very nice with a view out onto State and Holy Name Cathedral. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful. Drinks are unusual and very good. The butterfish was delicious. Desserts are also very nice. Had the pork rib appetizer also excellent. My friends and I enjoyed the meal, service and drinks. We would go again."

  • "Roy's is our favorite and of the Roy's locations, Chicago is our favorite. We were a little disappointed to get a table against the kitchen wall for an anniversary dinner. The main part of the dining room is quite lovely. The mac crusted mahi lobster cream sauce was not as flavorful as on previous occasions but the Hawaiian martini rocks. Also, the edamame wasn't quite hot or seasoned enough this time. We will be back though as I assume we just had a bad evening. The staff and service are friendly and professional."

  • "My husband & I went for a spur-of-the-moment night out. Beautiful restaurant. Drinks were great--sophisticated takes on some pretty sweet flavors. We had the Mango Mojito & the 1988. Both were sweet, but less so than we had feared, which was just right. Complimentary edamame--great idea. Lobster potstickers--wow. Their signature dish, the butterfish, was superb; I'd get that again. The short ribs were also very flavorful, though they cut the meat with the grain, which makes it kind of stringy to eat. But the sauces for both dishes were wonderful. We shared the chocolate souffle, which was one of the best I've ever had. They're not kidding when they say that lots of restaurants offer a souffle but nobody does it better. Obamas like it too!"
