Diner Reviews
  • "Being tourists, this was a shot in the dark. The restaurant is small (some would say intimate), and one of the seats for our table was a cushioned seat with the wall for a back. Was kind of uncomfortable. It is so small that you hear other table's conversations. For appetizer we ordered vegetable spring rolls and roast duck rolls. Both were good. The dipping sauces were good. Despite wanting to be adventuresome, I ordered my typical Pad Thai (my comparison dish to other restaurants) with chicken and shrimp. It was pretty good, but the shrimp was undercooked. It was freshly cooked, and hot. The curries in the Chicken Panang and the Roast Duck Curry were delicious. We had no dessert."

  • "My first time at the restaurant and I was with a group. The food was great but it was hot in the restraurant. Not sure if the air conditioning was not working or if they had not turned it on. It really took the attention from the great food."

  • "I do not like writing bad reviews but am compelled to do so here. Not only was the food and service mediocre at best, but both I and my dinner companion became very ill as a result of dining there - nausea, abdominal issues and more. The restaurant was not clean, the staff unfriendly and they clearly had AC issues that evening as well. I will stay clear of this establishment going forward."

  • "This was a pretty OK place. I think the food was decent, but the service wasn't very great. I hate asking to have my water refilled all the time. I think that's table waiting 101."

  • "So far, the best papaya salad I've had in DC--not too sweet, plenty sour and spicy. I was almost taken aback when a GIANT plate of pad kee mow was placed in front of me--almost double what I get at most thai restaurants. My only real criticism is that both my and my boyfriend's dishes were lacking in caramelization. That would have knocked it out of the park. Great find though and I plan to come back."

  • "Don't waste your time and money. Worst Thai food in DC."

  • "My wife and I were looking for some amazing Thai food and boy did we hit the spot. The staff, amazingly nice; the food, fast and some of the best Thai we've had for a long while; the location, super easy to get to and right in the heart of Chinatown. All and all, I'd go here again and again and again if we lived in the area."

  • "The food is really good and tastes very fresh. Service is fast so be sure to let your server know to wait 10 minutes or so before putting in your main order so you will have time to finish your appetizer!"

  • "This place is great for a late night dinner in DC. The service is good and food is consistently scrumptous. "

  • "Our dinners were well prepared, portions were large, and served quickly. Each in of group of six ordered something different and the "hotness" level on the menu matched the spicyness of the dishes. Other reviewers complained that the food was bland, we did not find this to be true."

  • "We had heard so much about Royal Thai's service, but the service we received was slow and unconcerned: I was left holding a wet teabag, for starters. The lemongrass soup arrived lukewarm and was quite bland, as if they had not bothered to finish it. Unfortunately, the curries were just as lackluster: thin, watery and mediocre, at best. The little upstairs room was nicely decorated and had a warm, cozy feel. Unfortunately, it was quite noisy, between the television and the party of six; not a great place for a couple looking for quiet conversation. There are a lot of choices in Chinatown. If you're looking for a nice, quiet, tasty lunch for two, this isn't it."

  • "Royal Thai has always had good food; however, I have to question the current quality or should I say cutbacks that I experienced. There seemed to be something missing in every dish; whether it was the red peppers in my chicken panang or the spice and vegetables in my spicy thai fried rice. With all that said, the food is still delicious, the prices are awesome for DC, and the service is always served with a friendly smile. Considering the tough economic times, the cutbacks are minor and the flavors are still wonderful. A good staple in the Chinatown community!"

  • "I made a reservation for 17 at 7pm on a Saturday night - hoping for the best. Royal Thai put us upstairs in a private room - which was fantastic. The service was great, the prices were eminently reasonable, and the food was delicious! Everyone kept saying what a good time they had and what a good restaurant pick it was. Highly recommend."

  • "The service was very good and the food was good. It was very cold and drafty where we were sitting. Every time someone came in, we were in the direct draft. Our food got cold very quickly. Service was fast. Drinks were excellent. Everyone was friendly."

  • "We stopped in for a quick late lunch. We thought we were taking a risk but we were very pleased over all. The decor was several steps above the normal cheezy Thai hangings and the place was clean. The food was good but the best part was the service. The waitress was so kind and welcoming we were instantly glad we took the risk."

  • "In search of a Thai restaurant with great food and service since the Thai Kitchen closed a year ago, the Royal Thai has been our best find yet!"
