A word from Royal Khyber - OC
The Royal Khyber............A Journey for your palate and mind. The art of Indian cookery lies NOT in high spicing but in the delicacy of spicing. Indian cuisine is universally known for its distinctive flavorings. It was in fact the lure of these spices which first brought the British and the
French, the Dutch and the Portuguese to the Indian coast. It is the use of selected spices in a particular manner (whole spices, ground and or spice blends) to bring out the dormant flavors of a dish, which is the real art, practiced by the experienced chefs in the Royal Khyber kitchen.
Royal Khyber is a Fine Indian Cuisine Restaurant, located in South Coast Plaza Village (across from Nordstrom).

My husband and I dined here for
Valentines day we had great service from the moment we walked in they were prompt and very attentive. We started with the vegetarian samosas, my honest opinion... I'd skip them a little dry and lacked flavor...We ordered two main courses and shared them a prawn dish which was absolutely yummy and spicy! Also we ordered the chicken tikka masala and it was bland and needed something extra like salt or something... All in all we'd go back"

One of the few good India food
restaurants.Never had complaint of food or service."
Dined on 2/14/2014
Samosas could have been more
authentic, too dry for my taste buds. Tandoori was a bit of a mss too. The curries are awesome and the service was pretty good."

Amazing food and extraordinary
service. I wish they had some fun indian music playing."

I have always been a great fan of
this established estaurant as the quality of food was among the best in orange county. However , this time the food was mediocre at best and the service was spotty. The portions of the entre was also very small."

Met old friends there. All had
Indian buffet. All enjoyed everything."

Received special treatment on a
special occasion. Royal Khyber staff made us feel special and set the mood for a great night. Last Saturday my hubbie and I dined at RK on our anniversary. The host sat us in a private table, greeting us and checked on us many times. The bartender was funny and entertaining, she too came by and to ensure we had everything we needed. Our waiter was fabulous and provided a delicious dessert to celebrate our special occasion. The food was excellent and we enjoyed the perfect level of attentiveness."

Tired of the same old food at
restaurants? Try this place. Typically relaxed, but very classy Indian restaurant. We had the tandoori mixed plate as an appetizer - excellent selection for sampling the varied tastes. we were there with our 12 and 14 year old granddaughters and they really loved it (they love spicy food)."
Dined on 1/31/2014
The place has nice ambiance, good
location, friendly staff, and drink selection is decent. I wanted to like this place but was not impressed with the food. The samosa appetizer was excellent as was the naan, but everything else was quite bland. I had the eggplant dish and the lamb, which was very tender but not very tasty. No spice and just bland. On top of this, the place is pricy. Prob won't make it back."

First visit to this restaurant and
thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food was terrific, the wine delicious, the service impeccable and the ambience was very nice. They accommodated our large group of eight with no problem. Very attentive and prompt service. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be returning."
Dined on 1/12/2014
Food of OK as in they did not
provide specific taste for different dishes, we order 4-5 different dishes - however, they appeared to made out of the same fundamental ingredients sauce. The service was good, especially when they serve you the food in your plate. Few restaurant servers do that. The wine needs to be in a cooler or wine chiller - cannot be served just in room temperature Finally, they should provide a finger bowl at the end. The Hispanic waitress knew the indian food and did a good job explaining and tried to sell. However, the servers need to do a balancing act and ensure that too much is not ordered."

The lace and food were good but
very short staff and delayed service"

Best meal I have ever had at Royal
Khyber, it was fantastic. The shrimp sagwaal (spelling) was yummy as were the other dishes the others had."
Dined on 12/21/2013
We come here often and are never
disappointed. The subtlety of Indian cooking is evident in all the dishes. Good service, good bar."
Dined on 12/21/2013
Good Indian food prepared the way
you want it. Pleasant ambiance but food take long to get to the table."
Dined on 12/14/2013
Quiet, relaxing experience.Our
server answered our questions, was very attentive & respectful-great service! Food was delicious & well-presented. We'll back & also be sure to try their Sunday brunch! We really enjoyed our dinner..."
Dined on 10/23/2013
our favorite here is the lamb
shank curry, aptly named Khyber nectar. It is very tender and nicely spiced, cooked over many hours. the best part is the curry which makes perfect dipping sauce for the naan. For $25 you also get naan, small side dish of salad and a little bit of basmati rice. we've tried other dishes here but nothing special (overpriced since portion is small and flavor is just so so) other than the lamb curry, which is exceptional."
Dined on 10/18/2013
We have had Indian food at several
different restaurants. This one was not the best. I don't think we would go back. The Indian salad was overseasoned - too spicy and did not seem fresh. The Chicken Tika Marsala was good, the okra (Bindhi) was very overcoated and dry."
Dined on 10/20/2013
This was our second visit to Royal
Khyber. As during our first experience the food and service were superb. We look forward to our next meal there."
Dined on 10/11/2013
We have been to Royal Khyber
several times over the past 4 years. The food is delicious. The wine and drinks are quite pricey and not top quality. Nevertheless, we always enjoy a shared dinner with friends. They make some of the best Rogan Gosh and Chicken Tikka Masala available in California. The Naan is good but sometimes a bit under baked. We will continue to return."
Dined on 10/6/2013
We've been coming to Royal Kybar
for years. The Northern Indian cuisine is cooked to perfection, eith impeccible service."
Dined on 10/6/2013
We came for the brunch which is
set out like a buffet, it's all you can eat and the food is prepared well and is tasty with a hint of spice. The ambiance is rather dated, but the service is very good and the host and staff check on you often, removing finished plates and refilling glasses. If you enjoy indian food, then this is the place to go."
Dined on 10/6/2013
We haven't been to this location
before, however the quality of the food and service were superb. We were given choices of spice flavorings for the entrees which was very true to their description. Dinner was timed perfectly as we had a play to attend the same evening. We will definitely be visiting this restaurant again soon."

Royal Khyber is well worth a visit"

A great Indian food place. Very
upscale and romantic. Had restaurant week with girlfriend and it was some good food. I had lamb in curry while she had chicken in curry."
Dined on 8/23/2013
Tried several items and they were
all great, but especially the Kyber Nectar, one of the best dishes I have had in a while."
Dined on 8/12/2013
I love everything about this
restaurant. Great food, great service! very polite staff."
Dined on 7/27/2013
The husband and I had an early
dinner reservation and were promptly seated at a window table. Our waiter was very helpful and attentive. The wine list was perfectly adequate and we very much enjoyed our food choices. The Spicy Calamari with Yogurt Sauce appetizer was delicious and delightfully different than the normal style. The Khyber's Nectar lamb shanks and the Butter Chicken were delicious and the portions more than adequate. Our waiter suggested the lychee panna cotta: great end to our meal. Yes, the décor could use a re-do, but the restaurant still feels comfortable and quiet."

We've been going here for years.
The food is consistently very good with excellent service."
Dined on 6/22/2013
Everything was fresh and well
prepared and well seasoned. We have been to many Indian restaurants. This is one of the best we have experienced."
Dined on 6/23/2013
The food was excellent and as
someone who enjoys Indian food at a daily basis, I was delighted. The only drawback is the cost. Royal Khyber is good for going out for a special occasion, but maybe costly for frequent visits. Overall, it was a good dining experience, with excellent and friendly service and delightfully delicious food."
Dined on 6/18/2013
We were there for a special
occasion and ended up not being too happy with the choice of restaurant. The service was poor from the get go, took them forever to take our orders, even longer to be served, and the food when it came was nothing to write home about. The waiters were not friendly. Mediocre food at a very pricey tab is what it was, and the portions were not too generous either. Will we go there again? Probably not."
Dined on 6/15/2013
As much as we like coming
here...the portions are very small. Also, a very small dish of mango chutney if almost $5...way over priced. Other then that...great service and very good food."

Very friendly. Very attentive to
my 2 year old grandson."
Dined on 6/11/2013
I have been to Royal Khyber
before... It is always a quiet place to relax with a nice ambiance. I love Indian food and their food was never really spicy enough. I am not sure why but the food was much improved. The Bhindi Masala had a nice char and the Malai Kofta was in a nice nut sauce."
Dined on 6/3/2013
This is restaurant Indian food at
its best. I love Indian food and have tried many local restaurants and this one sets the standard (and there is some really good Indian food out there.) The service is beyond courteous as well. My suggestion for first timers is to avoid the entrees and opt instead for the curries, which can be enjoyed "family style" by all the members of your party. Chicken Korma and Saag Paneer (spinach cooled with home made cheese) are a great starting point and will get you nicely addicted to Indian food. My only gripe was that we ordered a bottle of wine and it was already open when it got to our table. I could see that it was not full when it got there. Not sure what that was about, but I'm going back anyway."
Dined on 5/25/2013
Food was ok. I expected it to blow
my mind given the prices. Service was quick and friendly. Nice ambience. However, the place is old and needs an uplift."
Dined on 5/25/2013
We love the food here, and have
been a few times. The owner is always there and you can see the pride he has for his restaurant. The decor might be a little outdated, but still intimate and very nice. The service is always spot-on, they never let our water glasses get empty. And the food is great."
Dined on 5/2/2013
My husband and I were looking for
a great Indian restaurant during our weekend getaway in Costa Mesa, and read about Royal Khyber. It had some great reviews, one noting the best Indian restaurant in Orange County. Once we arrived, we were seated right away and our order was taken. When our food arrived, I was really looking forward to having my Chicken Tikka Masala, but once I tried it, I knew it wasn't what I expected. The sauce was more "tomatoey" than usual, and the chicken pieces were not tender. Our waiter, once our food was served, never came back to ask us if we needed anything. We finally had to ask the hostess for our bill, and once we received it, an item had been overcharged. Although the ambiance was nice, it lacked in service."
