Diner Reviews
  • "I went in this restaurant reading great reviews online. I could only manage to go late in the night , and to my dismay, to me it was too much hype. The food quality is very decent and i was looking for great authentic food taste. Dont get me wrong, the food taste was good, but haven eaten in other san diego area indian hotels and bay area hotels, this hotel food is okay. The ambiance is certainly good, but no parking in the downtown for this restaurant certainly is irksome. The service to me was very ordinary. I had to ask for salt had to just wait for a separate glass of water for my 5 yr old and I had to go in and remind to get a glass. Maybe it was just night time and the staff was ready to get out. Will be careful recommending this."

  • "We met some old friends to introduce them to Indian food and Royal India was a great choice. The food was flavorful and spiced the way we ordered. The naan bread was wonderful. Our waiter, Amit, was super friendly and knowledgeable. We asked if our friends could go to the kitchen to see the tandoor oven and they were allowed without hesitation. They came back with a piece of naan made fresh for them in the tandoor while they watched. They were amazed and very happy. Thank you for a great experience!"

  • "It was my first time in San Diego, and I saw this restaurant in a "Best Restaurants in San Diego", and I wasn't disappointed. It was our anniversary and we wanted something special and decided to try out this Indian Restaurant. We ordered Chicken Garlic Kabob as starter and Chicken Tikka with Garlic Naans as Main course. In both the dishes the chicken was very succulent and tasty. Will love to visit this restaurant again!"

  • "The food was done right. Yvonne, my server, was a firecracker. Engaging and friendly. Anna, the hostess, welcoming. Amit who served me last time came over to say hello. Felt like home. Thx."

  • "Have been looking around San Diego for some good Indian food for about a year now and Royal India, by far, has the best that I've sampled. The atmosphere was perfect for couples or groups and the staff were phenomenal."

  • "It's been a few years since I've gone to this restaurant and the food quality has declined. Not quite as tasty as I remember and the rice was clumpy instead of fluffy. The food was very hastily delivered which detracted from the ethnic dining experience."

  • "Service was slow as they were apparently understaffed. We waited some time for service. Food came fairly quickly, but we had to wait for our check. Staff there were friendly. Food was fine."

  • "Very over priced for everyday Indian. I LOVE Indian food but was no more impressed then the next place so to me it was extremely over priced. "

  • "Visiting from out of town, I ate here 4 years ago and the food was amazing! So naturally I came back on my next visit to downtown San Diego. I was somewhat disappointed. The service was poor (not enough glasses of water, uninformed wait staff, wrong entrees to wrong people, appetizers without promised chutneys, etc.) and the caliber of the food was not as high as it had been on my previous trip. Perhaps I ordered the wrong thing, but the lamb korma was tough and not satisfying. The appetizers were decent but how can you go wrong with fried everything? The naan were tasty but pricey. And there were flies bothering us for at least half the meal. I'm not sure I'll go back again."

  • "I took my wife there for her birthday and she loved everything. The food and device was great. I would recommend this place for any occasion and party size. "

  • "Food was not that flavorful. The biryani was good as was the fried onions, but the cauliflower dish was very dry and the hala chicken had little flavor. Our waitress was chewing gum or eating something when she finally came to our table. Others have complained about the service also. Although the food did arrive quickly."

  • "A friend and I came on a Monday night, with reservations, so the place wasn't too busy and noisy. Service was quick and efficient, very friendly wait staff. But the real star was the food, absolutely delicious. Can't wait to go there again!"

  • "My niece was I town she had never tried Indian food and was excited to do so. This was my husband and i's second time eating here at the royal. Indian. We love the smell of this place. Last time our waiter was so excellent! He suggested dishes and encouraged us to try new things. The waiter tonight was friendly enough, but he kept trying to tell us we were ordering too much. We wanted our guest to experience many different tastes. We were even cut off when. My husband wanted to talk desert, the waiter said, no let's see, you will not want any with this amount of food. We love to take lots of leftovers and for days later. When my husband did say he wanted desert, the waiter made all kinds of faces he could not believe we would order so much."

  • "Our waiter's name was Adim ( I think that is right). He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food. Had hummus and nan appetizer, absolutely delicious. Garlic chicken entree was really great too. My wife had a vegetarian dish, the name I do not know, but it too was excellent. Will definitely be back. Also, the decor is beautiful and the music appropriate. Other restaurants would do well to match their background music, if they have any, to the food and ambience."

  • "On Spring Break vacation with my kids, we visited the restaurant and really enjoyed our experience there. I was not quite adept at using Open Table, but the hosts there were patient and helpful. They went the extra mile to assist me, within reason, to secure my discount and make me feel welcome. They were extremely patient with helping my kids with their orders, giving them equal treatment as paying customers. My kids still talk about it today and want to visit again."

  • "Our reservation was at 12:00 but we were there early and no one was there so we were seated right away. Total experience was just okay. The food was good but not great. The server was friendly but not as knowledgable, I had Indian food before and ordered my favorite Chicken Tikka Masala. However, my friends were not familiar with the food and went by the server's suggestion and we ended up with three chicken dishes. I would recommend it, if you are craving Indian food and you are in the area, but I would not consider them the best in San Diego. As I said, we were here for lunch, so maybe dinner will have a different ambiance."

  • "We brought a group of ten from a conference. Reservation made quickly online, table was ready and we were seated immediately. The restaurant was beautiful. Service was impeccable and the food was hot and delicious. I ordered something that was not on the menu, but combined two menu items and was happily accommodated. A wonderful experience with no glitches. Would be a favorite of mine if I lived in San Diego. Prices were reasonable. Go there!"

  • "My wife and I very much enjoyed our first visit to down town Royal India. Food was excellent and portions plentiful. We also got very helpful recommendations by our female waitress, for the best choice of dishes. We'll come back!"

  • "My daughter and I are here. Our table was ready immediately on a Friday night although they were quite full. Service was prompt and friendly. My salmon was fresh and delicious while my daughter's curry dish was to die for."

  • "Disappointing service and food. Went with hyped rating and totally disappointed. Took over 20 minutes for someone to come to our table... we were almost ready to leave the restaurant looking for alternates in the area."

  • "This is one of the few GOOD restaurants available through "Thanks A Bunch" - a special treat for honoring our military. The reservations were made easily online. The staff were patient when a traffic accident delayed my dining partner, and the waiter was instrumental in explaining the menu, and boxing up the left over generous portions for us to return to our hotel with."

  • "To start, the service was top notch. From the moment we walked towards the hostess stand to our server, bus boy, and even the owner we were treated in "Royal" fashion. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and incredibly attentive to your every need the moment you step inside. We ordered a wonderful cross section of traditional Indian dishes. To start we had the samosas, filled with a generous portion of potatoes and peas and lightly fried. For our main course, we decided to share a couple dishes, we got the chicken tikki masala and chicken coconut curry. The curry was done perfectly, a wonderful mix of herbs and spices that leaves you wanting more. Chicken was fork tender and just melted in your mouth. Highly recommend this place!"

  • "I wanted a new dining experience and I was pleasantly surprised by this nice restaurant. Our waitress was well versed in her knowledge of the menu items and what the ingriedients were. Her recommendations were perfect for my wife and I with our different spice tolerances. I will return."

  • "Fantastic experience from moment we walked in & smelled heavenly aromas. Small group of female conventioneers from out of town really looking forward to the visit. Delicious food, attentive service while still giving us space. Beautiful surroundings. Good menu - tandori chicken surprisingly moist. Tika masala so good. You converted whole group to loving Indian cusine for those on the fence and disappoint longtime fans. Thank you"

  • "The food and decorations/atmosphere were great and the waiters were all nice. They could work on better service though because I found myself waiting a little long for everything: water, food, check. Despite that I definitely recommend the restauraunt for a romantic date!"

  • "I booked this restaurant for Valentine dinner to have romantic dinner with my spouse. Frankly, we didn't enjoy much. Prior booking table I have explicitly asked for Candle light dinner which they completely ignored it. I would never visit this restaurant on Special occasions. Also, This restaurant seem to be little congested and food was okay. We ordered Biryani which was more like Fried Rice."

  • "Pleasant owner and very good food. Only complaint was that we asked that our food order nit be ordered for a while so we could enjoy cocktail and hors dourves (sp). Waitress assured us no problem. Hors dourves and drinks arrived and less than 10 mins later the main courses arrived. That was disappointing for our party of 4 but otherwise it was good night overall. Thanks"

  • "Went here for Valentines day and was greeted with quick seating and smiling staff. The place was not busy at all, so when it took 10 minutes to get water and the attention of a waiter, my hopes quickly diminished. After which we were informed that the only menu we could order from was the single "valentines day" menu which was $50 a person. At this point we were about to just get up and leave but as they room filled they quickly realized they needed to abandon their menu idea as most all patrons were less than thrilled with the offer. We decided to stay and enjoyed the food. It was very good however overpriced. It was nice environment, but overall I wouldn't go back unless I wasn't paying."

  • "Food was very good service was not . They kept interrupting and trying to take the dishes before we were done eating . The dinner felt rushed. The chicken tikka and palak paneer were noteworthy."

  • "I love the fact this restaurant was open on Christmas day, Was able to relax and eat great food. Although the management did not plan accordingly for the busy day of foot traffic. Our poor waitress was running around trying to keep up and she did very well, but she did struggle to keep us happy. Service was great, food was excellent but the management should get a spanking for poor planning and putting all of their servants through a hellish night. I would recommend this place to people who love Indian food. Decor needs some updating as for any restaurant with these prices. Needs some more elegance and more balanced lighting as one room is very dark and then another extremely bright."

  • "This was a special evening for our family. Often times my 13 year old and 5 year old are very picky about food, but not on this night. They loved it all. We were able to order the meal for two, extra rice, samosa, and nan. It took care of the whole family. The staff was excellent with my 5 year old. They made great suggestions and made the time a memorable night for the whole family. The meal was supposed to be a gift for my wife but instead it ended up being a gift for the whole family. Could not have asked for a better experience."

  • "On the strength of a number of online rave reviews, we gave Royal India a try. I was surprised at the low number of items on the menu, but maybe that would mean fresh and scintillating flavors. Overall, the service was rapid and polite, but in the swift flow of items from the kitchen, our appetizers never materialized. The salad was nondescript, but the accompanying somoza was quite nice. Entrees were without particular merit, and looked and tasted as though they had been defrosted and re-warmed. It was a disappointment, especially when compared to our two other dining experiences in San Diego, which were close to stellar, and quite nearby. Our appetizers were credited on the bill before I even mentioned it. We were there less than an hour."

  • "This restaurant had a nice, quiet ambiance, just off the main trek in gaslamp, but it made a world of difference! Food was delicious, service was great. Overall, very nice, but a bit pricey.. For $2 of us with one entree and garlic naan (no drinks, appetizers, or dessert) total was just over $50."
