Diner Reviews
  • "My spouse's entrée was outstanding -- the Sea Bass, their signature dish. I was somewhat disappointed with the lobster entrée. I was rather dry, and not very flavorful. However, the biggest letdown was the carrot cake dessert. It was more like a small biscuit and had no flavor at all. There was no resemblance to any carrot cake I have ever had. This dessert was supposed to be large enough to share, but there was hardly enough there for a single serving."

  • "Rowland's has become our prime dining venue for special occasions. [We live an hour's drive away.] Cuisine is impeccable, ambience and service spectacular. In our experience there is nothing to match it in the Blue Ridge high country - plus the incredible mountain views. Bonnie and Jamie Schaefer have developed an establishment and reputation to be proud of."

  • "What a lovely and amazing restaurant and resort! From start to finish our evening at Rowland's at Westglow was perfect. The ambience, the food and the service were superb!! We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and have recommended it to friends who are coming to the area in Aug."

  • "Both nights at Rowlands were outstanding in every respect. My wife twice ordered the lobster and it was well prepared and tender. I can particularly recommend both the lamb and the chicken. Service was great both evenings and the view of the mountains from the dining room was delightful and relaxing."

  • "This is an amazing place worthy of San Francisco, South Beach or some simlarly laid back but sophisticated place. Great food, service, presentation - with personal attention and a great wine list, and - after dinner - a world class view. Don't miss this place - just don't take my place when I need a reservation..."

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Rowlands. While the service was a little slow(our waitress was new) the quality of the food was as high as we remembered it. The waitress was a little inexperienced with the wine service, something that could be easily remedied with a little training. In general I would like to see more local and seasonal selections on the menu."

  • "There are so many things to like about Rowland's- beautiful setting, delicious food, friendly and attentive service- while a bit pricey, Rowland's is clearly one of the very best dining spots in the area. My complaint is they boast a seasonal menu, yet they seem somewhat confused as to which season it is. Using ingredients of the like of butter nut squash and pumpkin as late as May 30 is pushing the limits of a season appropriate menu- the reason for the menu was that the owners had not been able to come to sample the new menu- I appreciate their intent to ensure that the new offering is up to snuff, but holding diners hostage to their travel schedule is not the way to treat guests for a restaraunt that aspires to operate at this caliber."

  • "Very Very small dining area with No views-website is a bit deceiving. You cannot see the sun set from the resturant. The only reason I gave 5 stars is b/c the chef and staff went out of their way to make our special occasion memorable. "

  • "We sat outside on the porch before dinner and watched the sunset over the mountains. It was a gorgeous sight. We went into the dining area for our 9:00 reservation. Our waitress was very friendly and gave great recommendations for starters and entrees. The hit for the starter was the Prawns. There was just 1 prawn, but it was the size of a rock lobster. In fact, it tasted just like lobster. The pork, grouper and beef tenderloin were outstanding. It is very pricey, but what an experience! I would recommend to anyone that enjoys having a great meal and dining experience! Would definitely go back! "

  • "We took our son and his wife here to celebrate his graduation from Appalachian State the next morning. We couldn't have picked anywhere more lovely than this. The views were breathtaking, the food divine, our waitress (Nessa) was attentive, competent, and personable, the valets offered to take a group picture of us .... what more can I say? My son had the sea bass and raved that it was the "best fish" he'd ever eaten. This was an elegant, memorable evening for all of us and we would highly recommend it to others."

  • "Wonderful and helpful waitress; lovely food presentation; so good that no extra seasoning is needed and is just heavenly! I ate the lamb, medium rare and vegetables were superb! So tasty. My daughter ate the pork chop and said it was the best she had ever eaten. Sat in the sunroom porch and it was a beautiful view. We stayed at the Westglow Resort and Spa and it was so nice to eat and go upstairs. Highly recommend! "

  • "You know you have one, too…one of those Most Memorable lists: Most Memorable Holiday, Most Memorable Theatre Experience, Most Memorable Night Out….Rowlands is now in my top 5 Most Memorable Dining Experiences list. From the warm welcome to the delicious and unique "pumpkin pie" I was knocked out by the attention to detail in every bite, in the attentive but not obtrusive wait service, and that perfect martini that started it off. The restaurant also benefits from its beautiful location and the style and class of its dining rooms. A feast for all of the senses…..and all of this without the slightest hint of pretentiousness. Go! "

  • "This place was AMAZING!!!! Service was top notch. Food was outstanding, view was incredible. Wonderful place to dine and we will be back again. The only thing to note was the lamb chops. it was on the small side so if your a big eater I would not order. Although it was devign in taste. My husband was just a bit hungry still afterwards. Only downside if you can even call it that. A must go to place. "

  • "We LOVE Rowland's so please don't take this wrong. But the Brunch Menu on Easter was VERY LIMITED. A bit of a disappointment. The service as always was EXCEPTIONAL! We will ways go back for dinner but probably not for a Brunch with only 6 items to select from."

  • "4 different dishes-none particularly outstanding-entrees mid-30's expected more-a rabbit sausage on beautiful strip steak-the steak should have stood on own since generous portion and very tender- chef trying much too hard to be innovative. Classy place-wish food had been better."

  • "If you're looking for a 5 star dining experience in a beautiful manor home with top flight service and terrific views, Rowland's is the pace for you! very romantic with a fire burning on a cold winter night and graced with piano music from the living room. It was a thoroughly delightful experience and not at all stuffy. Severs are knowledgeable and attentive without being obtrusive. Beef tenderloin and rack of lamb were expertly cooked as ordered. We didn't indulge in desserts, but they looked equally decadent."

  • "We went for New Years per their ad about their celebration. Music ball drop etc. the piano player left at 9, and knew very few songs. He was Russian. Nice guy. Enjoyed talking with him but not what is needed for a celebration. Had to send my starter martini back. It was awful and it took 20 mins to just get our drinks. Then no napkins and we had to clear our table in the Living Room from previous guests because no one did it. Also did not bring cocktail napkins when drinks finally arrived. They were out of the lamb chops and several side dishes. The food was excellent but the service is very poor for a restaurant where you are paying these prices. By 10:30 the place was lost empty so we called our driver and left without having dessert."

  • "Boone and Blowing Rock have a fine variety of restaurants, but this is the best of the best! Everything about this eating establishment is 1st class. The atmosphere is refined, the view of the mountains is spectacular. The waitstaff is knowledgeable about everything on the menu. The citrus infused lobster was amazing. The sea bass was flavorful, light and flakey. The bill caused a few seconds of indigestion, but you get what you pay for!"

  • "Nice ambiance on enclosed patio. Very pretty views. Buffet: turkey: white and dark meat - average, mashed potatoes -very good, sweet potato casserole -pretty good, rolls -fair - cold and kind of dry, green beans -ok, gravy -ok, cranberry sauce- very runny, stuffing -large pieces of breading as stuffing, pumpkin and pecan pies. My husband ate the pumpkin and said it was bland. It appeared dry. I expected fancier and better food. The server was very sweet (Sandra). I thought $55.00 as overpriced for this average meal. We also had 2 glasses of wine, a "specialty" drink, 2 coffees with Bailey's and our bill was $200 including gratuity (which they added) for we 2. Ruth's Chris would have been cheaper and better. Definitely a disappointment."

  • "So special! Quiet romatic nooks scattered among several small rooms within the old inn. Absolutley stunning view, service and food. Chef came around after dinner and spent several minutes with each of the 4 tables in our area. Top notch."

  • "My husband and I met our son and his girlfriend at Rowland's at Westglow. We enjoyed drinks before dinner in the Living Room of this beautiful mansion. A fire was aglow in the fireplace, the chairs and couch were very comfortable. We enjoyed our time together talking in this beautiful room prior to dinner. Then, we were relocated into the dinning area where we had a wonderful dining experience. It was intimate and we were able to talk with each other without being bothered by loud noises or loud music. It was a wonderful evening."

  • "This was our second time here. The restaurant is charming and this time we sat in the dining room with the fireplace, which the manager put on for us. (last time we sat in the sun-type room; which is nice.) We had cocktails and the manager made a champagne cocktail, which wasn't on the menu, at my wife's request. Quite good service, there. Our salads were tasty as were our entrees (my wife's steak was perfect), but both were presented as if Gordon Ramsey might be judging on appearance and pairing. The food as it appeared on the plate was kinda' kooka-monga, but, again, it was tasty. My advice: just trust your food; let it provide the "wow" factor, not some wild presentation. The dessert, Chocolate Earth, was outstanding as was the coffee."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 11 year anniversary at Rowlands. We have dined at several restaurants in the area but have never visited this restaurant. My husband said the lamb chops were the best he had ever had. They melted in his mouth. The soup was phenomenal. I wanted to lick the bowl but figured the other guests wouldn't appreciate my lack of etiquette. Great scenery. Private and definitely a great selection for celebrating a special occasion."

  • "What a surprise to find a Tara looking mansion with an astounding mountain view at the end of a wooded lane. Beautiful setting and food prepared in the best of styles. A really pleasant ambiance with the exception of a frenetic piano player who could have evened it out a bit. Cheerful staff......good smiles and accommodating attitudes. Really good experience overall. Was taken aback when the waitperson refused to order our cheese plate first before the rest of the meal. Have always been accommodated to on this at other fine restaurants it was jarring to be said no to. Will return.....special place. Doorman very pleasant."

  • "My husband & I have lived in Boone NC for 10 years. Little did we know, this whole time we had never indulged in one of the best dining experiences in town. Tucked away from the obvious, Rowland's is one of the best kept secrets in the High Country. Imagine, you enter the grand foyer of this historic 1917 mansion overlooking one of the most spectacular views in our area. You are immediately greeted & shown to your perfectly set table nestled in one of the charming dining rooms. Your wine is carefully poured, a one-of-a-kind amuse bouche is set before you, & wafts of your upcoming feast start to leak out of the kitchen & tease your senses. You dine; it's fantastic, & you wonder why you've been denying yourself this unbelievable pleasure."

  • "Creative innovative food! Absolutely delicious!!!!! The beef tenderloin was cooked perfectly and the poached lobster was fabulous! I especially enjoyed the garlic panna cotta which accompanied the lobster. If you are into Manhattans, they mix a terrific one! The service was outstanding as well. We ate in the library which was intimate and quiet. Perfect for conversation. We highly recommend Rowland's."

  • "The amenities are beautiful. However, the piano player was so loud that we could not carry on a conversation in the living room. Most of the wines are unfamiliar and very expensive We were able to find a reasonably priced one that we were familiar with. After we received our salads, the waitress did not ask if we wanted fresh ground pepper until we were halfway finished. Three of us had the lobster entrée and everything on the plate was barely warm. The lobster was undercooked and tough. The beans had been blanched, and that was it. Nothing on the plate had been seasoned. The desserts were fair. I'm used to dining in fine restaurants that are expensive, but this wasn 't fine. My friends say they would rather eat at my house."

  • "The restaurant is perched on a mountain with breathtaking long range views. Believe it or not, the food and the service were even better than the view! Fairly expensive, but worth it. Our favorite place in the Blowing Rock / Boone area."
