A word from Roundhouse Restaurant
The elegant Roundhouse Restaurant is located in the Black Hills-Fort Pierre Railroad Roundhouse, built by the Homestake Mining Company in 1901. The facility serviced and repaired engines for the Black Hills-Fort Pierre Railroad and Deadwood Central Railroad.

By the 1990s the building had fallen into disrepair and the City of Lead decided to have it torn down. A Rapid City businessman purchased the building to save the last railroad structure in town. In 2007 Duane and Phyllis Sander bought the historic building and had it totally renovated. Today it houses the Roundhouse Restaurant.

The pinnacle of the Roundhouse menu is the 5-Course dinner and wine pairing. The menu is changed quarterly to highlight seasonal items and wild game. The 5-Course and A la Carte menus work together to help provide something for everyone. Our Chefs work to make the wine pairing exceptional, with wine and food combining to make the total experience greater than the sum of its parts.

The restaurant was hard to find and when we got there, we had to pick out our own bottle of wine without anyone to help us with the choice. We went with a white, which came out not quite chilled enough. Our waiter did bring a chiller with ice in it, but it still took two changes of ice before the wine was chilled enough to drink. The food was mediocre. Had the buffalo steak and it was dry and tough. Not enough of the glace to help with the dryness. Went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend, but we were not impressed.

Super atmosphere and service, but that is where it ends. The calamari was not fried enough. The Buffalo Chislic (sp?) was way too spicy and my wife couldn't eat it. The Buffalo rib eye was full of gristle which ruined the meal.

Heads Up: For the second instance in the last month, Open Table has offered and "made" a reservation for a time when the target restaurant is NOT open. If it is now imperative to contact the restaurant independently to insure that our reservation will ACTUALLY be useful, maybe the smart thing to do is to eliminate the middle-man; if you know what I mean. We have heard good things about this particular restaurant and my "required" ratings - above - reflect the "rumor" only.

Had a French Dip sandwich. Might be the best I've ever had. It came with homemade chips. Very good. The only real problem was with the menu. Seems they were out of some things such as hamburger and bison. Appeared unusual to me to be out of such staples but it was on a Sunday.

I was really confused with the way our meal was handled. I ordered the 5 course with wine pairing. They came out of order and ended up not eating the 4th course. Food was fair. It wasn't busy so that was the reason for the mix up.

Our waiter only works once a month and did need some polishing up but overall the food was decent, the buffalo chislic was way over cooked and the chef was in love with cilantro which made the food overpowered wih that flavor. the beef and dumplings were great the pastas were overcooked but tasted good.

A good spot for Lead. Cake desserts were over the hill. Lunch items were acceptable. Steak a bit over done. Service a bit confused.
