  • "My fiancée and I went to Rouge for an anniversary dinner and were very impressed. Our server was attendant, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. He answered all of our questions but also provided us with suggestions and recommendations based on our needs. The food was excellent (no surprise based on other reviews and word of mouth) and most dishes had a French influence that was right up our alley because of our penchant for French cuisine. Needless to say finding a bottle from the Languedoc-Roussillon on the Wine List was another bonus. When you couple local suppliers with gifted chefs, the result is something special. All in all a delicious meal, and we'll be going back again once the weather warms up and the garden is in bloom."

  • "First thing I noticed when we entered, was the "Chaine de Rotisseurs" membership plaque. A membership of which is nor to be taken lightly. I knew then that we were in for a treat, and we were not disappointed. Would definitely like to go back and try the Chefs' tastings."

  • "Our experience at Rouge was good; the food was best in Calgary until dessert. At our table, we tried both the chocolate cake and the bread pudding. Our waiter described the flourless chocolate cake as "standard", but loving chocolate, we tried it anyways. It was awful - worse than cafeteria chocolate cake, the texture was so dry and dense that it was unappetizing. The bread pudding was just ok. The main courses and appetizers were so delicious though. Between us, we tried elk carpaccio, oysters, calamari salad, and beet salad for appetizers and all were great. For mains we had arctic char, porchetta, lamb, and duck and everyone was happy with their dishes. We'll definitely go back, but eat dessert elsewhere."

  • "Service was very disappointing. If you want to charge top end prices as they do, then service needs to rise to the same level. I ordered the pork dish and half the meal was fat that had to be trimmed. Very disappointing and much too expensive for the product delivered."

I was in high heels, and it was cold out, so I didn't appreciate that this location didn't have available street/dedicated parking. Other than that, the meal and service was exceptional. We were the only one in for lunch that day, so it felt a little like a private setting for two."

  • "We celebrated our 10 year anniversary with a special dinner at Rouge. We had the Chef's Selection along with the premium wine pairing. The meal and wine were both fantastic. There was great attention to the use of local suppliers and everything was made from scratch including the butter. I was not a huge fan of our table as I had my back to the room and the view of the street was nothing special but there were better seat in the house. Overall a fantastic meal and we will definitely return."

  • "Unfortunately although Rouge came highly recommended I cannot offer the same. My appetizer was tasteless, they brought me the wrong meal for dinner so by the time my correct order had arrived my BF had finished his meal as I didn't want him to wait & eat a cold dinner. Considering the prices which were not an issue I was surprised when they chg a cake cutting fee ($5/person) for the BDay cake I had brought. Finally when the bill arrived they had charged for the wrong entree which was more than the one I had ordered but had already ran my CC through, the difference was minimal but considering the so called calibre of this restaurant I was not impressed. Based on my food I would not recommend."

There was someone at the table next to ours who had a very noisey laugh, which was a bit annoying as I could not hear my friends speak from time to time. I would definitely go again, but it is pricey and for a special occasion. I can see why this restaurant is one of the finest in Calgary and the world."

  • "Went with my boyfriend who usually isn't into trying new foods and he loved the food! We ordered the striploin and duck, both were delicious. Atmosphere is pretty good, seemed a bit pretentious but enjoyed our dinner nevertheless. Would recommend for special occasions or fancy dates! Our server Andrew was great!"

  • "We attended Rouge for a small celebration for 2. We ordered the chef's tasting menu with paired wine. The food was stunning. Easily competing with some of the best restaurants in the world. Unfortunately the ambiance of the restaurant and the service didn't match the outstanding quality of the food. After the June floods, I understand that this restaurant underwent a re-design, choosing to move to a more stark and modern look, which resulted in a dining room that appears unfinished. In addition, the service was friendly, but often inattentive and slow. Perhaps they could have benefitted from another server on duty. Despite these flaws, I'll definitely be back to Rouge, the food and wine alone are definitely worth the (high) price."

  • "If I am going to be honest, I enjoyed that meal far less than any others eaten at Rouge. I was no fan of savory to sweet back to savory. Only really enjoyed half of the wines... Two very much too sweet, Spanish one needed to be decanted four more hours. So many rich dishes left my stomach bloated and upset. I really wanted to be open to whatever the chef came up with - but as pretty/artistic as a presentation may be -- it is always more about the flavor and flavor blends. The Spanish wine may have been fine but going from a light, sweet wine to such a heavy, robust, old-vine wine would seem an odd and overwhelming progression - and then back to a light and fruity white. Seemed more random than planned. Not set up to deal with cash."

  • "We went here for our anniversary, and it was just o.k. Starters were great - main courses were good. Had to wait to long to get a drink, and once we got one - took to long to get a wine list. When you are spending this much money, I expect service to be good. Easiest way to keep people happy is make sure they always have a drink. It's good to try, but there are better places then this one."

  • "Husband and I wanted to try out this restaurant for the very first time. Since it was our Valentine's dinner (on the 13th), we dedided to splurge and do the 6-course dinner for $110/person. We would've done the wine pairings too, but I am expecting, so no wine for me! Our server was awesome, the service was great, and the food was delicious! The portions were plenty too, which was pleasantly surprising, as I was expecting tiny bite-sized portions. We didn't have a menu to know what the food was beforehand, so it was a surprise everytime. They explained the dishes as they were presented to us. They were also very accomodating and made sure my courses were cooked and safe for me to eat. Overall, very happy with our experience here :)"

My husband and I don't have overly adventurous pallets, so the beefs tonge and chewy sable fish weren't what we expected to eat. Overall I hoped for a lot more for how well rated the restaurant was. I've had several chefs tasting menus, and this won't be one that stands out amongst the rest (except for eating beefs tonge maybe!!!)."

The food exquisite, tasty and beautifully presented in unusual but delightful combinations. The ambience is delightful and Rouge takes full advantage of its heritage home location.   • "The atmosphere was quiet and romantic (it was our 45th anniversary). Our waiter was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive but not 'in your face'. I had the best duck ever (I order duck whenever I can), this was flavorful, juicy and tender and not greasy. I understand the char was also 'to die for'. I will recommend this restaurant to all who ask; a very satisfying experience in every respect. Cannot speak to the view as it was dark when we arrived."

  • "I'll confess I was expecting to be wowed based upon all I've heard about Rouge. I've heard John Gilchrist talk about it and know the history of the restaurant and its high acclaim. THe service really was outstanding. Both waiters were nothing short of exceptional particularly in presenting the food. Really well done. The surprise came in the fact that both my wife and I found the food quite ok. It was not great. It did not seem to be aligned with the accolades we had heard. There wasn't anything wrong with it. It was just so. I had the artic char. It seemed to need something in addition to the ragu to enhance its flavor. Still an enjoyable evening overall."

  • "The name of the restaurant fit the style and exterior of the red house. We were greeted right as we entered and the waiters were prompt and knowledgeable. The food made my taste buds dance. All the dishes we tried (calamari salad, butternut squash ravioli, pan fried trout, porchetta, waygu beef and soufflé) were cooked perfectly and were all well seasoned. I loved how the light was kept low but had a warm feeling to it. There were only a few tables in each section which made conversing possible. I would highly recommend this place."
