Rouge et Blanc is a two-star New York Times French-Vietnamese restaurant situated in Soho.



The chef, Macks Collins (Foliage, Jasana Polana Country Club, C.I.A.) offers an east-meets-west French and Vietnamese-inspired menu. At Rouge et Blanc, Thomas Cregan brings more than 20 years of wine-tasting experience from the regions of France and placed in the top ten in The Best Sommelier in America Competition 2011. The wine list is all French. The name Rouge and Blanc is at once an homage to the wines of France and to the classic Stendhal novel. The restaurant has the look and feel of a French colonial tavern from 1940s Saigon.

  • "Very interesting and inventive taste combinations that slanted more Asian than French. Each dish seemed to have a little spicy kick to it, but not in a repetitive way. We ordered three separate flights of food, though the waitperson indicated that we could order all together and they would arrange the presentation. The poisson du jour was a grilled half lobster tail. It was amazingly tasty and a perfect way to end the meal."

  • "I've been to Rouge et Blanc 4 or 5 times and always enjoyed the food. It's very inventive and flavorful (except for the kale, which is barely edible). Plus I love the atmosphere and the fact that you can have a real conversation. I have always found the wine-list a little over-priced relative to the reasonable food prices, but the issue this time wasn't the wine. The waiter eagerly described a special involving lobster that sounded terrific, but didn't mention what it cost. These days lobster is actually not all that expensive, but I still knew I should ask before ordering it. Sure enough, the dish was $60--twice the cost of anything else on the food menu. Do they really think it's okay to do that?"

  • "We arrive to the restaurant after making reservations at 9.45 only to be told that the kitchen is closed and they cannot serve us! They were non accommodating whatsoever. What's the point of making a reservation if the restaurant is gonna make you go all the way there only to tell you sorry we can't take you! So annoying and unprofessional. I do t care how good the food is, if you are not going good service to stay up to par!"

NY Times review. I always have an issue with finding places where I can hear my dining mates, but the noise level was low, so I had no trouble hearing/speaking at a normal level of conversation."

  • "This is my 3 or 4th time here in the last 18 months and the 2nd time in about 6 weeks with 2 different groups. The menu is very interesting and the dishes are very flavorful. However, I am not as impressed with the food upon the latest visit which might mean I need to take a sabbatical from there for a while. Additionally, the dishes are a bit small which makes it a bit pricey, more than the $$ rating on Opentable. On the last visit, the 7 of us ended up paying $50 p.p. without drinking any alcohol."

  • "The review of this restaurant sounded wonderful. Great food, wine list excellent. The food was very good, very small portions if sharing. Good wine list. The service however overshadowed all that. For some reason our waiter stopped appearing. Our second glass of wine came at half the amount & after pointing it out another waiter saved us. He was great but for the poor service I would recommend it."

  • "The food is tasty and interesting, AND portions are too small for the price. On Memorial Day I made a reservation for early dinner, arrived early and was seated at the table of my choice. The restaurant was almost empty. After I'd been seated for a while, I was asked to give up the table because, the waiter had just received email from his boss informing him that someone else had requested that table. The waiter was polite and apologetic. When another equally desirable table became available, I requested it; I was told it was being held for someone else. 20 plus minutes elapsed before those guests arrived. At my request the waiter asked the boss, and I received a complimentary glass of wine. Too little too late."

Their food was so flavorful that I can still taste it writing the review.   • "This place does interesting but odd things with Brussels sprouts and cauliflower -- so much so that you can barely taste the vegetables. On the other hand, the overall taste is so good that you don't really mind. On the menu, your eye immediately goes to pigs' ears, and the natural question is why? We didn't get them. We did get fried chicken (great) and the fish special (also great but I can't recall what kind of fish). The waiter recommended an excellent Vouvray. Desserts were exceptional with offbeat ice cream flavors. Except for the extravagantly uncomfortable chairs, we really enjoyed Rouge er Blanc."

  • "The food and Rouge & Blanc is always creative and thought-provoking, as well as delicious, with its nouvelle Vietnamese cuisine that transcends tradition to be very modern and of the moment. We enjoyed a special braised fish head appetizer that had richly succulent collar and throat meat, roasted brussels sprouts with lime and crisp hominy, a coconut and scallion pancake served with shredded pork and duck, and braised pork belly with corn. The biggest challenge is the superb wine list--it is sometimes difficult to pair wonderful red burgundy with the spicy, Asian-inflected food, so the white list is often an easier and more satisfying choice."

  • "HUGE disappointment after enjoying ReB a couple of times prior. When I sat and asked about a dish I enjoyed, I was told there was a new chef. Ok let's give it a try. The food was wonderful BUT after 23 minutes waiting for the third entree to be served while two of us sat and waited as our food got colder and colder, I finally went to the kitchen to ask where the last dish for our table and was told - this is a very small kitchen. REALLY??? We ended up leaving our food and walking out. Never to return. Too bad as I really enjoyed this spot and recommended it to many people but things have changed and will not make a return."

  • "It's a cute restaurant in a cute area, and for those driving, relatively easy parking on 6th Ave around 7pm. They say that the food is meant to be shared, but strangely many of the dishes were not easy to share. Also the portions are very French (read small), as an example, the pork belly dish came out with 2 pork belly pieces. The food had the potential to be great, but we (6 of us), felt the food was generally too salty - with a little less salt, the food could have been much more enjoyable. Their service is a bit slow, but we didn't mind as we were not in a hurry. The waiter we had was very good and quite knowledgeable about their wines, which led us to 3 very good bottles. We liked the restaurant, but the food needs upgrading."

  • "The food here is extraordinary -- fresh, innovative, with enough variety to please everyone in your group. We ooed and Ahhed over the leek confit salad, the Hanoi fried chicken and even the kale chips they brought on the house. Refreshing to eat Asian inspired food that didn't lean too heavily on salt or fat. We loved the awesome music -- how often does it happen that you ask each other several times during a meal what the song is? The only problem was that we were in a bit of a rush and our waiters pace was... Luxurious. Hated tracking him down to order and get check. But the food MORE than made up for it. Can't wait to go back for date night."
