A word from Rouge et Blanc
Rouge et Blanc is a two-star New York Times French-Vietnamese restaurant situated in Soho.

The chef, Macks Collins (Foliage, Jasana Polana Country Club, C.I.A.) offers an east-meets-west French and Vietnamese-inspired menu. At Rouge et Blanc, Thomas Cregan brings more than 20 years of wine-tasting experience from the regions of France and placed in the top ten in The Best Sommelier in America Competition 2011. The wine list is all French. The name Rouge and Blanc is at once an homage to the wines of France and to the classic Stendhal novel. The restaurant has the look and feel of a French colonial tavern from 1940s Saigon.

Although I am proud of being a New Yorker, I heard of this place from a gentleman on a plane coming into NYC for a weekend with his wife. After they went and told me how good it was, I set up a birthday celebration for my closest friend and out wives. The food was excellent, service impeccable and the wine that was recommended was both enjoyable and fit perfectly. The menu is not large, but everything we ordered was good. The portions are a bit small and I would think for the price they could be a bit more generous, but we just ordered more to make up for it. Lots of sharing of small plates, so it was socially fun as well. One thing to note, the food is in general quite spicy, so consider this if you can't handle the heat.

onw should be aware that this is a tapas stule menu meant for sharing. it will take 2-3 plates per person to whet your appetite also the great majority of the plates are spicy - not overwhelmingly so- but if you don't like spicy - avoid this spot. All the dishes were great with unique tastes but almost all had a little kick very important to note as well yhat they have a limited liquor license so they do not have a full bar , only wine and wine cocktails

Due to unpredictable changes, I had to call and change the reservation three different times. Each time, the staff was so understanding and accommodating. A situation that could have been embarrassing and frustrating turned out to be wonderful. Our party of 9 was comfortable and well taken of. And the food!!! The dishes are tapas style so we ordered several different dishes and all shared (you must order the brussel sprouts). Each bite was better than the last. Between the food and the service, I highly highly recommend this gem!

Very cool ambiance. Everyone who works there seems to be french, which really impressed me because it is known for its french/asian cuisine. The wine list very extensive. Food was very good, but it seemed to come out piecemeal and I didn't get mine until everyone was finished, but the staff was very attentive and making sure everything went as smoothly as possible.

Very unfortunate experience. The first plate was so overspiced that it was barely edible and the toasted bread was burnt so that it resembled a lump of charcoal. When asked, we were reassured that "yes, it is supposed to be that way". The crispy calamari was good, and the charred octopus was OK, although 4 small bites don't make a dish. The sweet potato was charred to blackness, and tasted like charcoal also. Then we waited 35 minutes for the last 2 dishes to arrive to no avail, so asked for the check and left hungry. Apparentlythere were issues in the kitchen but ignoring that and not updating customers is not good service. The music was disturbingly loud, and the lights so low that many used their iPhone's flashlight to read the menu.

Though our Opentable reservations were confirmed, the restaurant didn't seem to have a table for us when we got there (on time). They offered us a table outside of their dining room, in the walkway of their exceptionally crowded bar area, but as we we knew this would affect our dining experience, we asked to wait (at the bar, buying a drink!) until their next available dining room table opened up. At this, the hostess refused, saying they were "exceptionally busy tonight and I wouldn't be able to seat you before 10:30" (We had an 8:45 reservation!) Obviously, we choose to leave. I doubt we try going back.

I'll be the first liberal hippie to bash colonialism, but I've gotta say, the cuisine that's come out of French colonization in SE Asia is fantastic. Think French finesse, attention to detail, and plating, paired with Southeast Asian ingredients and flavors. I came here with a few colleagues and we ordered the octopus, the rice-scallion crepe with crispy duck, the baby fennel, and Hanoi fried chicken. I would recommend all of those dishes. Meats were all succulent (my boss commended me on making the reservation, saying it was the best octopus leg he's had), and spices were well balanced. Ooh and then came dessert. We ordered all three desserts. Everything exceeded expectations. Possibly my new favorite restaurant in NYC.

The four of us who dined at Rouge et Blanc for the first time recently agreed that it was one of our favorite dinners we've ever had in NYC. This is food unlike anything you'll find outside of SE Asia--the delicious spice and flavor combinations of Vietnamese cuisine combined with wonderful French technique. Go with a partner or small group that likes to share and experience a lot of different plates during a meal. We shared four vegetable dishes, four entrees, two desserts, and a bottle of wine for about $60 per person--an incredible value. The staff to a person was sincerely friendly and proud of the product they were sharing. They went out of their to make us comfortable and to inform us about the cuisine. Can't wait to get back!

Very interesting and inventive taste combinations that slanted more Asian than French. Each dish seemed to have a little spicy kick to it, but not in a repetitive way. We ordered three separate flights of food, though the waitperson indicated that we could order all together and they would arrange the presentation. The poisson du jour was a grilled half lobster tail. It was amazingly tasty and a perfect way to end the meal.

I've been to Rouge et Blanc 4 or 5 times and always enjoyed the food. It's very inventive and flavorful (except for the kale, which is barely edible). Plus I love the atmosphere and the fact that you can have a real conversation. I have always found the wine-list a little over-priced relative to the reasonable food prices, but the issue this time wasn't the wine. The waiter eagerly described a special involving lobster that sounded terrific, but didn't mention what it cost. These days lobster is actually not all that expensive, but I still knew I should ask before ordering it. Sure enough, the dish was $60--twice the cost of anything else on the food menu. Do they really think it's okay to do that?

We arrive to the restaurant after making reservations at 9.45 only to be told that the kitchen is closed and they cannot serve us! They were non accommodating whatsoever. What's the point of making a reservation if the restaurant is gonna make you go all the way there only to tell you sorry we can't take you! So annoying and unprofessional. I do t care how good the food is, if you are not going good service to stay up to par!

This is my 3 or 4th time here in the last 18 months and the 2nd time in about 6 weeks with 2 different groups. The menu is very interesting and the dishes are very flavorful. However, I am not as impressed with the food upon the latest visit which might mean I need to take a sabbatical from there for a while. Additionally, the dishes are a bit small which makes it a bit pricey, more than the $$ rating on Opentable. On the last visit, the 7 of us ended up paying $50 p.p. without drinking any alcohol.

Biggest complaint - no AC at the front of the restaurant, where we were sitting! Bay windows were open but it was kind of hot outside, and I was sticky sitting at our table. The review of this restaurant sounded wonderful. Great food, wine list excellent. The food was very good, very small portions if sharing. Good wine list. The service however overshadowed all that. For some reason our waiter stopped appearing. Our second glass of wine came at half the amount & after pointing it out another waiter saved us. He was great but for the poor service I would recommend it.

The food is tasty and interesting, AND portions are too small for the price. On Memorial Day I made a reservation for early dinner, arrived early and was seated at the table of my choice. The restaurant was almost empty. After I'd been seated for a while, I was asked to give up the table because, the waiter had just received email from his boss informing him that someone else had requested that table. The waiter was polite and apologetic. When another equally desirable table became available, I requested it; I was told it was being held for someone else. 20 plus minutes elapsed before those guests arrived. At my request the waiter asked the boss, and I received a complimentary glass of wine. Too little too late.
