A word from Roti Indian Bistro - San Francisco
When brothers Ash and Rajiv Gujral planned a new Indian restaurant, they wanted to create neither an ultra-formal dining room nor a tiny hole in the wall venue. ROTI Indian Bistro marries casual, contemporary styling to classic Indian cuisine. Designer Susan Gujral created a warm, modern space with dramatic color, light and imagery that portrays the rich aesthetic essence of India. The chefs take diners on a culinary tour of India, offering a taste of the North in the Tandoori meat dishes and hints of the South in the vegetarian curries. Fresh breads are available from the tandoor, a mesquite- fired clay oven unique to Indian cooking. Local and organic ingredients blend with traditional Indian spices to create a diverse fresh, menu. ROTI prides itself on the dining experience - at this popular new addition to the vibrant West Portal neighborhood, refined customer service from the attentive staff and fabulous food have established a higher standard of dining for the area.Continued

  • "Our server was just wonderful. Very polite and sweet. Food was good. Tandoor chicken wings were the bomb! I thought it was a little odd that there was no background music or anything.. Just kind of blank noise until people starting talking over each other. Overall I would go back."

  • "This is the Best Indian restaurant in the Bay Area. They not only do the usual favorites well but they have monthly specials that are incredible. This month the appetizer special was padron peppers with cheese. The meat entree was a lamb curry called Achari Gosht."

  • "We had a delicious meal with ample portions for a group of seven who wanted to share everything from appetizers through main courses. We had a birthday dinner and the restaurant gave us the front table at the window - really comfortable with a fun view of West Portal on a Friday night. The tandori chicken, shrimp and the lamb and chicken curries were outstanding. No a drop left on anyone's plate and we had a couple of young people in their early 20's who are picky eaters as well as a bunch of us in our 50's. Food had a nice kick without being too spicy for some of our diners. Wait staff and hostess were sweet, attentive and had no problem with us bringing our own birthday cake. A very successful and happy party."

  • "I've been here several times, once with large group so I got to taste many things on the menu. The chicken curry with coconut is excellent - my favorite dish there. Better than most other Indian restaurants I've been to. Nice place for a date or dinner with a friend."

  • "We love to bring friends from out of town to Roti. It's our favorite Indian restaurant. Food is great and they have monthly specials to add variety. Service can be a bit slow at times but it wasn't when we were here last. It can be quite noisy if you are seated near large parties."

  • "The best tandoori chicken and game hen in town. Make sure you order it with their superlative goat cheese naan. Simply delish!"

  • "inviting setting, attentive service, outstanding fresh ingredients expertly prepared; what could go wrong? curries exceptional, goat cheese naan rich (definition of comfort food). Couldn't stop eating the vegetable rice. Spicy, just enough heat to enjoy the flavors."

  • "How sweet, Roti gave everyone a complimentary glass of sparkling wine on Valentine's Day. We decided to celebrate there and were glad we did. Our dinner was fabulous. We had our favorite naan (goat cheese) to start and had the Methi chicken and lamb tandori, accompanied by basmati rice with vegetables. Smooth mango sorbet topped off our meal. We love this restaurant with its vibrant flavors and great service."

  • "My wife and I made a last minute reservation on Valentine's night after I picked her up from the airport from a cross country flight. They couldn't take us til 9, so we hung out at the always lively Philosophers Club Bar down the street for a bit. When we got to Roti, we were ravenous... Good thing. They had just what we were after. Delicious tandoori chicken, palak paneer, cauliflower in an amazing sauce, Palau rice and roti bread... Our server was very helpful explaining the dishes and even helped get us something not quite on the menu that night, but that we had there before. Overall, just a great experience."

  • "I've written before about this restaurant. If you like Indian food, you'll love this place. The food is fantastic. The Game Hen is to die for. The chicken is so tender and juicy with a delicious flavor. The chicken korma is the best I've ever had. Mr. Shah, the genial host is always attentive and extremely cordial. He's wonderful. The service is good, with nice wait staff. The atmosphere is very nice and good for any occasion, romantic or otherwise. The mango lassi is wonderful as well. I think the old saw, "Try it, you'll like it!" applies here."

  • "Hospitality was amazing as well as the attention to our table, the politeness of every person who served us. We were also offered a complimentary desert wine and desert ( had to decline the desert wine after having a bottle of red, then the manager offers us desert instead) ;)))) Amazing food ! Must go for Indian food lovers!"

  • "We ordered the Brussels sprouts appetizer on this visit. The sprouts were cut, flashed fried, and seasoned with delicious spices. OMG! We kidded with the waiter that we should put them in a bowl and eat it with our hands like popcorn! They were that delicious. We also got the butter chicken and lamb with raisins. Started all this with our usual goat cheese naan. Love this place for its food and its gracious staff."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary at Roti, one of our favorite restaurants, and chose one of the monthly specials, which we enjoyed very much. It was sea bass in a complex cream sauce - a variety of spices."

  • "My fiancé and I have eaten her on several occasions and each time has proven more memorable than the last. This most recent time, we took my two younger sisters there to celebrate one of their 18th birthdays. My older sister came as well and brought my 17 month old nephew. Not only did the restaurant accommodate all of our different needs, the owner went above and beyond to make us happy. He brought out lentil crackers and lassi for the baby and explained what was in any of the dishes that we asked about (we had 2 vegetarians and one vegan at the table). It was wonderful, and the food was so great! Can't wait to go back!"

  • "The service was a little slow at the beginning getting our appetizers ordered. But overall the food was amazing as always and the service was not too bad. We were seated right away thanks to open table. The only bad thing I have to say is we ordered one curry dish and a plate of rice and thanks to the appetizers being so filling we didn't each much of the main course so we had it packed to go. They took the plates in the back to box up and the next day when I opened it up to eat we were given less than half the amount of food that was left on our plates. For both the curry and rice. I thought that was very rude of the server especially when it is not a cheap place. That was really shady to me."

  • "Friday night, four of us had a very good dinner at Roti. Service was excellent. We were well taken care of by our waitress, and busboy. The owner stopped by many times to check with us to make sure things were ok. The food is tasty and fresh. Two of us ordered from the January specialty menu, while two of us ordered off the regular menu. We started with a bottle of wine while waiting for one of our party to find a place to park. Parking is not easy on a Friday at 7pm. We had a couple of starters to share, and another bottle of wine. The meals are very large! We never felt pressured to hurry our yummy dinner and make room for someone else. We stayed over 2 hours, drinking another bottle of wine, and enjoying delicious desserts"

  • "Our party of 4 visited this restaurant for dinner - we were seated right away. Our server didn`t seem to energetic and did not offer us any choices in regards to the hotness of the entrees. We had Lamb Vindaloo - good flavors but not as spicy hot as is traditional - in fact it was like a mild curry. It was the same with the Chicken madras meal. We will go back to Aslam`s Rasoi for spicy hot Indian curries - being from the UK that`s what we expect!"

  • "We've been coming here since it opened and are so glad to have Roti in the neighborhood. If you want authentic delicious Indian food, this is the place. The owner greets us or stops by the table every time we're there and is genuinely interested in making our experience positive. We get the Navratan Korma, which is a creamy vegetarian dish, with both the plan naan and the naan stuffed with cheese. The curries make your mouth water! My daughter always gets a chai tea, which is made in the tradition way and not sweetened. We have to go there every time she's in town."

  • "We had a long lunch celebrating my friend's birthday, and the restaurant was not too busy, so quiet. The server was outstanding; attentive, friendly and thoughtful. The food was very good except for a spinach dish which was way too hot for my taste, but my friend enjoyed it."
