Diner Reviews
  • "The food was fine, but not great. For the price ($42 entrée of lamb chops for example) I expected better quality meat. It was tough to chew and not that flavourful. Ingredients should have been higher quality in general. The service was good and the place itself is open and enjoyable with interesting architecture. Photos of celebrities on the wall were interesting, but didn't see any more recent that 2007, so I expect the place was once better than it is."

  • "Staff, ambiance, wine list, appetizers and dessert were what we exepcted from a restaurant of this calibre. Main course - a miss. Duck arrived in a beautiful presentation. The first few slices cut like butter. But after that, I could barely cut through the breast slices. At one point I had to spit out what I was chewing because it was impossible to break it down to swallow. My wife was served raw potatoes with her main course. When we spoke to the waiter he commented that "it happens sometimes when you get a tough duck breast but 9 out of 10 times its perfect". He said the potatoes at the bottom sometimes aren't cooked through so as not to burn the top layer. Both explanations were unacceptable as was the lack of an apolpgy."

  • "The duck entree was really good however, the korean fusion dish with the noodles was really dry with the pork. If you want asian food, go to an asian place. Still gave a good tip, it wasn't the server's fault the pork was dry."

  • "Despite the slightly limited options to choose from, the food was great. Not the first time that I've been to Rosewater so would say it consistently lives up to the standards."

  • "Food was very good and tasty. Tuna was well seared and duck was good. Presentation of the food is well arranged."

  • "Appetizer Good: scallop risotto Bad: ice-cold bread For myself, I ordered a medium rare striplion with a half lobster. The lobster was dry, wife's duck confit was overcooked as well. Instead of getting a medium rare, I received a well done, the server claims it's because of the ambient lightning, causing it to look white. The server was nice enough to give me another one, but she kept insisting the original piece was done properly. So to avoid any further complications, I asked for a rare replacement instead and it was also well done, I just gave up and ate as much as I could. I still gave a 15% tip as I don't want anymore trouble from the restaurant, but there was no "thanks" from both the server or the receiption as we were leaving."

  • "The service was excellent, with the waiter tending to our every need and making great recommendations. The quality and quantity of food was superb, especially for the price compared to other high end restaurants. I recommend this restaurant to all my friends."

  • "I was in Toronto for business and wanted to take my father, who lives near Toronto, for dinner. I made the reservation at Rosewater because according to what I saw on their website, they had a varied and eclectic menu. They did not disappoint. The service was attentive but not intrusive, friendly, and efficient. The interior of the restaurant was open, airy, and very beautifully decorated. The food was excellently prepared and elegantly presented. Everything arrived hot and fresh. The coffee (one of my 'litmus tests' of a restaurant) was excellent; flavourful, and strong without having either a burnt taste or excessive acidity. Well done, Rosewater. I will definitely return again when I am next in Toronto. Thank you for a lovely evening."

  • "This was our second time dining at Rosewater and again, we were not disappointed. The attentive service and wonderful food make for a splendid dining experience. I had mentioned on booking that it was for a birthday supper and when we got our bill, they mentioned that they had covered the cost of dessert. When we were being seated, the maître d' asked "Isn't this where you sat last time you were here?" That was about a year ago!"

  • "Though it's located in a very historic building and has many architectural features that suggest "the good old days", the Rosewater definitely has a very contemporary vibe thanks to its music and beautiful progressive interior design. The wait staff were professional without being "coincé" as we say in French (stuck-up or snooty), very friendly but not intrusive. As for the food, heaven served on dishes! Salads offer extremely generous portions (you might want to share one). Main courses prepared with flair and absolutely exquisite-tasting. The dessert was quite good but not out of this world (competition is tough in this city). An excellent selection of wines to choose from, although they could have a few more options by the glass."

  • "My fiance and I went there for a dinner during the week after work. Everything was delicious. I would recommend the duck confit pot pie, and the molten chocolate cake. It was not too busy while we were there, and the service was attentive to our needs. Overall a great experience and will definitely return!"

  • "We were celebrating a milestone birthday and it was an awesome dinner. The food was absolutely delicious. We were seated in a nice quiet booth and without asking the waiter brought my husband some biscotti with a candle for his birthday. The service was top notch! We will definitely recommend this special spot to anyone dining in the city!"

  • "If you plan to go for a business lunch or nice dinner - that is definitely place to go. Variety of food choices as well as beverages and vines can satisfy almost any choice. I tasted here the best sorbet in long long time..."

  • "I especially enjoyed being surprised by the "amuse bouche" and the "pallet cleansing" sorbet. The menu offered excellent choices and presentation was excellent (a feast for the eyes before the stomach). The service was excellent. Our wait staff was attentive, warm and possessed a good sense of humour. I loved both the exterior and interior which preserved the historic look of the building. The washrooms were clean and spacious. The steak and beef main was too generous (not a problem for most people), I would have been happy with less. Altogether a very good dining experience."

  • "This place was outstanding! We arrived and had 2 people promptly as for our coats and our reservation. the room had a very romantic ambience to it. the waiters and waitresses were very professional, knowledgable and well spoken about the dinner menu. (I had the tuna-rare, which was outstanding). The service was timely, not to slow but not frighteningly fast. The drinks were very good and there wasn't to much noise. My date could talk in a regular pitch of voice and i could hear her clearly. All things considered, the restaurant was a wonderful choice, food was amazing, service very good, i would easily give this a 4/5 and highly recommend it to anyone who feels like taking someone on a romantic date!"

  • "My wife and I used to frequent this restaurant years ago prior to moving abroad. In those days Toronto's restaurant scene was much smaller, and the Rosewater was among the city's finest. Having just moved back we decided to revisit our fond memories and were disappointed. We sat in the upstairs dining room and everything around us felt tired. There was also a TV at the bar glaring at us during our meal - which felt strange as this isn't a sports bar. The food sounded interesting (e.g. Moroccan Lamb) but the only thing Moroccan about it was the couscous on the side. There are too many newer, more innovative places in Toronto to justify coming back soon. We have great memories of the Rosewater and to preserve them we probably won't return."

  • "Order a booth reservation and ending up getting a small private room. Amazing setup and the food was filling. Five course meal for 50 bucks (valnetines). Was worth the night out"

  • "I've dined here a number of times, but sadly this time was not great. Some elements were still good though. The hostess was tremendously gracious. Our waiter was very distracted. Our table received no bread prior to the meal. When our meals arrived, there was no offer of pepper. At dessert there was no explanation of the offerings. They were quickly thrown in front of us and our waiter disappeared. The choice of campare for a palate refresher was difficult to enjoy as it was extremely bitter. The main dishes were tasty, but in terms of fine dining the service lacked. We will probably go elsewhere in future."

  • "This place is amazing! I have never been there before this visit for Winterlicious and it was truly great. For the appitizer, I had the crab cakes which were delicious and was a fairly large portion with 2 crab cakes. It was tender on the inside and crispy on the outside with generous portions of crab. For my main I had the braised beef which was tender enough to eat without a knife. It just fell apart with a fork. It was delicious. And the mashed potatoes it was served with was very smooth, creamy and delicious also. THE DESERT: Oh my goodness. I had the bread pudding and it was the best bread pudding I have ever had. It was hot and sweet and delicious and the maple caramel drizzle it was served with was amazing."

  • "Beautiful setting, delicious food, fantastic, attentive service, but very chilly...make sure you bring a sweater! Perhaps it felt extra chilly because there weren't many people there when we were (less body heat to generate warmth?), but in any case, it was uncomfortably cold."

  • "Sergio, the server was excellent. I know it was Winterlicous, however the veal was very small. The food tasted great. Excellent balance in all three dishes. We had the crab cakes, fennel salad, excellent form the two girls. Love the duck and salad. Veal was so tasty. and the pan seared rainbow trout was cooked perfect? Great dessert, the chocolate mocha, apple bread pudding with sauce was excellent and the sorbet as well. The suggested wine was a great choice. We loved it!"

  • "I came with a friend and ordered off the regular menu as opposed to the Winterlicious set menu. Our order took way too long to be prepared - our server apologized to us twice, but it still took too long after for what we ordered. The entrance with the bar was overwhelmingly busy, but once we were seated at our table, the atmosphere was much more pleasant. The bathrooms were very messy and they had no hand sanitizers or soap! I really didn't expect this from the Rosewater - Winterlicious or not, I did expect the overall experience to be more sophisticated. I might try it again and try to keep an open mind but I will not be returning anytime soon."

  • "We have been to Rosewater many times and will continue to dine there. But I'm amazed that a place with wonderful food, and atmosphere, great wine list, etc, can have such stuck-up waiters. These guys walk around with pickles up their... Can't they just be a little more friendly?"

  • "My husband and I decided to go to Rosewater as an early Valentine's Day celebration and to try the Winterlicious menu. We couldn't have been happier with the experience. The ambience of the restaurant was lovely. From the moment the hostess took our coats and showed us to the table, to the attentive waiters, to delicious food, everything was extremely well done. The food I had (a parsnip puree soup and rainbow trout with asparagus and tomato risotto) was delicious and perfectly cooked. The molten cake for dessert is one of the best I've ever had. I would highly recommend Rosewater as a great place for a nice, romantic dinner."

  • "Was really looking forward to dining again at the Rosewater...only to be pretty disappointed. I arrived early for my reservation and sat at the bar. Bartender was really great, knowledgeable about beverages and friendly. Once we were seated - it kind of went down hill. Our waiter was absent most of the time we were there. There was also an issue with the food - having a food allergy I asked the waiter if my appetizer contained the food I was allergic to and was assured that is did not. Half way through my appetizer I discovered that it big in fact contain the food I was allergic to! Fortunately for them my allergy is not severe. Don't think I would recommend this place."

  • "Food was amazing as always. Main floor a bit drafty/cold. Our waiter wasn't very personable and didn't smile...perhaps he was having a bad day (will give him benefit of the doubt). Rosewater is a beautiful restaurant, stunning ambiance."

  • "My table had the atlantic salmon, pork duo, belgian cake and the fig. The food tasted awesome however the quantitiy of the portions could be increased by a third in order to justify the price . Service was great . The lighting wasnt the best . Overall a good restaurant that becomes better once these adjustments are made"

  • "This is a beautifully decorated restaurant where food is the star, the wait staff discreet yet attentive all packaged in a elegant atmosphere. We went for Winterlicious lunch. I had the short rib sandwich which was flavourful and juicy; for dessert, the molten cake was chocolatey and gooey. The duck breast salad was ok. I think Rosewater could be a good place for a very nice romantic dinner."
