Diner Reviews
  • "must try this dish - it's rich in flavor, unique and delicious!"

  • "Great Italian food and valet parking at lunch - the winning combination when considering access for a disabled person. My sister's birthday lunch was excellent, the food interesting and well prepared, the view out on the street just the right combination of sunny outdoors and colorful people of all ages. North Beach favorite."

  • "I took my sister and roommate to here for a birthday celebration using a groupon. The food was fantastic, the service was prompt and polite and we were highly impressed with the atmosphere. I was impressed with the wine list and the live band was a nice touch. A bit loud for my taste, but definitely a place I would take family or a special someone to again."

  • "Pizza was burnt. Frito misto was greasy but it is a fried dish. The Cesar salad and wine were good, we've been here before and liked it so maybe we just ordered wrong. I'd advise against the pizza."

  • "Having moved to Oakland, I hadn't been to Rose Pistola in many years. I'm happy to say it was still very good and reasonably priced. My pasta dish with clams, baby scallops and fresh peas was unusual and very tasty. My friend really enjoyed her whole red snapper. My favorite dish, however, was the chocolate hazelnut cake (they had another word for it). It was big enough for two, came with expresso flavored whipped cream on the side, and was one of the best chocolate desserts I've ever had."

  • "The over stressed and unfriendly hostesses/ management at the front cast a shadow on our experience in what we had hoped would be a new neighborhood favorite. Food and waitstaff were good but not exceptional."

  • "We wanted to take some out of town guests to North Beach for an Italian dinner. While this is an Italian restaurant with lovely pastas and wood-fired pizzas, it also had a wide variety of California cuisine entrees to choose from. Everything from the shared salads and appetizers to the entrees was great. The pasta with chicken leg and mushrooms was delicious served with little perfect pillows of pasta. The pressed chicken was cooked perfectly and still moist with entertaining seasonal vegetables. The vegetable sides were cooked crisp - perfect. Our waiter was very understanding of our need to catch up with our guests and we did not feel rushed at all. Lovely evening."

  • "Great dinner after Beach Blanket Babylon. We arrived 30 minutes before our reservation and our party of 6 was seated immediately. Excellent food, outstanding service. Couldn't have asked for more."

  • "Yet another great dinner at Rose Pistola. Can't say enough good things about the staff and the food. I had sand dabs. Yum."

  • "We had been to Rose Pistola before & enjoyed the food. This time, it was totally a miss. We ordered two glasses of wine a Zin & a Pinot, & it took 4 tries (each time we were served the wrong combination) and 3 waiters to finally get our wine & even then I was not served a Pinot - it was something awful. The pastas were ok, but nothing to write home about. The noise inside was deafening at 9pm at night, in addition to a band playing in the front. We don't think we will back any time soon."

  • "Great food and good service. We haven't been to pistola in quite a while, as we regularly eat at Rose's Cafe. Regardless, we really enjoyed the food. English Peas, Tendrils and artichoke & cheese pasta was fabulous. Would definately recommend. Sea food spaghetti also remarkable. *baby sprouts"

  • "It was great. It won a James Beard award when it opened and I had not been there since but it was still great! The bartender, I hope her name was Vanessa, was awesome. The food was outstanding."

  • "Food was good but not special. However our waiter suggested an Italian wine that was delicious and reasonable."

  • "By far one of the finest Italian restaurants in the Bay area. Great menu, excellent preparation and presented. The best service, ambiance, and décor in the city. Will go back as often as possible."

  • "We live in North Beach and frequent the local restaurants often. we hadn't been to Rose Pistola's in some time and were taking an out-of-town guest out for dinner. We were really looking forward to the experience. Needless to say we were extremely disappointed. What added to the disappointment was that this is probably one of the most attractive restaurant spaces on Columbus! The service was good but not great. The bar made an adequate drink. We looked at the menu on Open Table before going and noted several items we really wanted to try. When we arrived and received our menus it was completely different from the posting. Virtually nothing on this site is available on the current menu. There menu was exceptionally limited and overpriced."

  • "Always very good food even though my cesare salad had way too much dressing this time. Fun spot with live music and great service!"

  • "Great North Beach dinner spot. The food is always delicious and the service is especially wonderful. We went early and took the kids and they had a fantastic experience. We have also gone late without children and found the ambience delightful."

  • "Disappointing. This restaurant use to be a wonderful spot in North Beach with fresh, creative food. It was noticeable empty and given our experience, I understand why. There was a piece of plastic in our meatball appetizer and warm not hot suggesting it came out of a package. The fried calamari and onion rings were indistinguishable and greasy. The "freshly made" pasta showed no signs of being fresh and flavors were either bland or out of balance. The pizza was mediocre at best. The service was good and it was easy to hear the table conversation since the restaurant was mostly empty. I'm hoping for a revamping where quality reigns."

  • "We had tickets for a Sunday 2:00PM matinee of BBB. Rose Pistola was one of few options that opened early, offered its full Italian menu plus about four true brunch options (French Toast, egg scrambles, etc. ) Four of us split the difference. The food was good, if not memorable, and a nicer presentation could have compensated for the smaller portions but the bread and service were very good and the prices fair. We had a nice window table for people watching. It was quiet which made for easy conversation but that's because there weren't very many people there in our time frame. It's worth a try if you have a need similar to us."

  • "Rose Pistola is my go-to in North Beach. I will have drinks elsewhere, I will eat a sandwich at Molinari's, I will have a shake at Mo's. But if I want to eat lovely, well-prepared, unpretentious meal, this is where I go. By comparison, everywhere else is too noisy, too gimmicky, too garlicky, or too touristy. But if you would like to have a top-drawer meal, drink a few nice glasses of wine, if you like fish, if you appreciate well-prepared vegetables, and a minimum of fuss and "Buona sera," get over there. We were a party of 3 grown ups and a 10 year old. Our server spoke articulately but not preciously about the menu and the wine list. He treated the child in the table with both courtesy and humor. A very nice evening out."

  • "The people here were truly genuine and friendly. The pizza and salad were good -- not excellent, but definitely good. We had the pepperoni pizza. I had a plain salad -- just lettuce with shaved parmesan. I would like to return and try some of their other dishes."

  • "The only complaint is that they rushed us out of there. From the time we sat down to the time our food came, it had to have only been about a half hour. This has happened a few times to me now."

  • "My lunch partner and I had not dined here in a long while. She had a wonderful salad and I put away a mushroom pizzza. Particularlly nice touch were the breadsticks upon request. We enjoyed our conversations and the food. Deft, non-intrusive service appreciated. Thanks."

  • "Best meal of our weekend trip. Everything was made with fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection. Order the Caponata salad the tuna is so tender and flaky..they poach it themselves instead of out of the can…fabulous!"

  • "Went here on Valentine's day. Had a prix fixe menu, but decided to forgo this option. Had bruschetta and burrata as apps. Delicious. Burrata was a great alternative to getting the 5 meats and/or 3 cheese platters separately. I had the brisket, delicious. The girl had gnoochi, I stole some, also delicious. Very good"

  • "This restaurant was recommended by the concierge at our hotel. The ambiance looked nice enough and the hostess was very friendly but that's where anything good ends. The waitress was very gruff with no personality or suggestiins. And the food was flavorless. We ordered everything from beet and goat cheese salads to pizzas, gnocchi, and ravioli. It was not a fun first meal in San Francisco for our group. And there was nothing authenic Italian about it."

  • "We had a great experience at this restaurant from the moment we walked in the door. Our server was very helpful and friendly. We started with a cheese and salumi appetizer. It was a perfect way to start our meal. The entrees were delicious. And everything was timed very well so we were able to eat a nice leisurely dinner without feeling rushed."

  • "Is was so loud it was hard to have a conversation without yelling. It took 1 hour to get our meal after we ordered I had the chicken which was good and filling. My husband had the risotto which he about died when he saw how small the portion was and he said is good but not excellent for the price. We went their after bbb but will not return."

  • "We booked an early reservation (5:30) because we had a show to see at 7:00. We had a small group (4 people) and ordered a pretty standard fare; a few appetizers and 1 entee each. By 6:00 we had received only 1 of our appetizers and was told the kitchen was "having trouble" with the other one - a Farinata. By 6:15 I asked them to just bring us our meal. We were finally served at 6:30 and the Farinata came soon after (at no charge). We ate hurriedly, had to skip dessert and barely made our show. While our server insisted that the botched appetizer did not delay our meal, I have to imagine that it did. How else to explain it arriving an hour after we sat down?"

  • "After a long absence we came back to this favorite and were not disappointed. The food was delicious especially the calamari and octopus. It was busy but the service was very good. We were seated in an area that we had requested when we made the reservation (quiet) and really appreciated that."
