Diner Reviews
  • "We were in Chicago for a business trip and wanted some authentic Italian food and dining. The experience was wonderful. This place is very intimate; there are about 10 tables in the dining room with service for four at each table. Our waiter was great. He recommended a dry red for us, Chianti, which was perfect. The food was generous and authentic. We tried another Italian restaurant down the street the 3rd night in town, and the food didn't compare to RoSal's. Next summer while we are in Chicago again, I will be dining at this place again!"

  • "I was looking forward to a first visit to RoSal's for dinner with coworkers. The appetizers ordered weren't hot when they came to the table, and what was delivered was different than described in the menu. I had the veal special for the day and it was smothered in a mushroom gravy that was too much; the meat alone should have been the star on the plate but I couldn't tell because it had too much gravy on it. I left disappointed - not sure I'll return again."

  • "They have changed the decor since last time robbing the restaurant of its charm. This time the food followed suit."

  • "Food was great and service equally good. Will be back!"

  • "Great place for a group to go. A good place to bring out of town people who want good food and not at a chain restaurant that they have at home."

  • "What an outstanding place tucked away on Taylor Street at the western end of Little Italy. Easy valet parking, friendly service and outstanding food. Don't miss the fried ravioli appetizer. Fried spaghetti entree is awesome and there's always the best eggplant in the city."

  • "Excellent food. Plates at the table included: family style salad (basic), grilled calamari, stuffed artichoke, Scallop special (mushroom, broccoli, scallop with oli'oli sauce, veal with a puttanesca sauce, chicken cacciatore and spinach ravioli. Plenty of food and could definitely share. Good service. Family atmosphere. Sit downstairs if you have a group of 5or smaller. Small, but good wine list. Will absolutely return."

  • "If you like traditional American styled Italian, this is a very good place to check out. Reasonable prices and everything is cooked perfectly. Simple and inexpensive wine list."

  • "RoSals is charming. The food is excellent as is the service. I particularly appreciate the fact that it is not terribly loud."

  • "The food was great, the owner and staff were very attentive and we had a nice evening out. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a traditional italian dinner at a locally owned place."

  • "There's a reason RoSal's has been in business forever! YUM! Try any dish or order off menu! The chef will accommodate (except for anything containing anchovies!) Ambiance is classic, if a little cramped, but service is attentive, knowledgeable, and polite. I'd take guests from out of town in a heartbeat. Thanks!"

  • "There may be new walls, floor and ceiling, but it's still the same great food and service. Had friends from LA with us. They said it beats anything like it in their town. Only sorry we missed Joe and Linda ... and our picture that used to hang on the wall over Table #1½. Maybe next time?"

  • "We were really looking forward to trying this Taylor St. spot. We were shocked at how bad it was. The food was simultaneously bland and oversalted and the service was slow and inattentive. We will not be returning. Save your money for one of the many other Italian places in the area that get it right. "

  • "First time since the remodel - Great Work! Old prevailed (thank you!) and the "new" just made it better (great ceiling!). Sorry about the pictures, but we're sure you'll be snapping more! Now … the FOOD: still fresh, flavorful and abundant. Lasagna: cheesy, meaty and rich red sauce; Chicken Scaloppini - great balance of flavors over two chicken breasts sautéed beautifully, not a bit dry, and a light tomato-basil sauce in the background pulling it all together - delicious! Deserts, hot coffee, anisette and the meal was complete! Bene! The SERVICE: as friendly and welcoming as ever - always attentive, never once rushed the evening and kudos to Linda! Like she was welcoming us back into her "new" home; and we say Thanks! Welcome back! "

  • "RoSal's is our favorite Italian restaurant on Taylor Street. It is family operated and they are great hosts. The food is fantastic and the only problem is there are way too many great choices to have to narrow down when ordering. The food portions are astonishing- my pasta order had enough for 3 people. Valet parking available. A great place for couples, groups of friends, and perfectly located for pre-game meals for Hawks, Bulls or Sox. We always take out-of-town guests here to get a taste of Chicago Italian. "

  • "We have been waiting a long time to try this Italian gem and it is amazing. Yes, this is a first visit with many more to come. Started with the stuffed mushrooms - amazing - the filling is so smooth. For main courses we shared the fried spaghetti with chicken and the shrimp and artichoke hearts. Both tasted amazing and the portions - enough to take some home. Finished up with a canoli and tiramisu - save room definitely. Will definitely be going back. Bring your appetite."

  • "Had a delicious pre-Graduation dinner for my daughter, wife and me. Was curious to see the results after the renovation. The place looks great! Some nice improvements particularly the bathrooms & back. The food, as usual is outstanding! Neat thing about Rosal's is if you want something not on the menu but can describe it, they will do their darnedest to prepare it for you. Service is always good and we really like the intimacy of the place. My daughter had the Linguine Pesto with grilled chicken: very fresh pesto! My wife had the Eggplant Parmigiano, very well prepared and tasty. I had to fight the urge to order my normal "go to" Portabella Pasta made with cognac cream sauce, instead got Rigatoni Diablo with oh so good shrimp. "

  • "We used to live in Chicago & this was one of our favorite restaurants. We were disappointed that almost everything haas changed & not for the better! The decor wasn't as quaint, the food only mediocre, & the service was terrible (I think our srrver's face might have cracked if he attempted to smile). We will not visit again. 😔"

  • "Very delicious Lasagna and Chicken Carbonara but be warned - the portions are HUGE!! Unfortunately they do charge $4 to split a dish so it's personal preference on whether you would like to split and pay the fee or get individual dishes and have guaranteed leftovers! Overall - absolutely delicious!"

  • "The best Italian restaurant in town is back after being closed for several months due to a burst pipe in January. I couldn't wait to pig out on RoSal's famous ravioli appetizer then a plate of fried spaghetti entree. It was like a homecoming with waitress Linda waiting to greet all her customers. The food is outstanding as always and the entire place has been renovated. I can't wait to get back there. "

  • "Great food, made from scratch with the freshest ingredients. Excellent service. Only 10 tables so its intimate. Love this place for business dinners or romantic ones."

  • "I am from out of town and wanted something authentic with charm, this place hit all the marks. 10 tables, very cozy, great wine list, friendly wait staff, scratch made Italian while Frank Sinatra sings in the background ......sigh. what more can you ask for? I ordered shrimp with artichokes in a light creamy sauce with fresh tomatoes served on linguine, it was so hard to decide I wanted some of everything. When the waitress asked if we needed anything else all I could think of was a wheelbarrow! Roll me out."

  • "I've been going to RoSals on yearly trips to Chicago for a decade. This time I came back to a remodel that created a second floor dining area. Unfortunately, the lovely intimate dining experience of before has been destroyed...and the waitstaff were disorganized, with slow service. The fried ravioli was as good as ever, but the sweet agnolotti was disappointing -- the sauce was watery and pasta doughy. I am so sad to have lost my favorite Italian restaurant."
    Dined on 5/2/2014
  • "Happy to see that the remodeling project did not change the original charm of the restaurant."

  • "Always been my neighborhood favorite and the remodeling over the winter gives it a fresh new look but keeps the "family " Ambience. We just returned home after two weeks in Italy and after dinner at ROSAL's almost felt like we were still in Italy!"

  • "Rosals has such a great menu. The hard part is choosing one off your top ten list or one you have not tried in a while. So glad it is open again after remodel. Cannot wait to come back. Maybe next week."
