Diner Reviews
  • "attended with large group, seating was easy and quick. was not thrilled with my dish (crab enchiladas- was spicy and menu did not indicate this) but very much enjoyed tastes of other entrees especially fish tacos! service became someone slow towards end of meal/dessert/paying however to the restaurants defense we were a large chatty group who didn't seem to be in a hurry."

  • "Shredded kale and bits of shredded salmon, terrible salads! So many better options for Mexican in penn quarter such as oyamel."

  • "I had a shrimp special that had tacos and corn on the cob. The presentation made your mouth water and the food tasted delicious. Rice and beans were so good. And of course the fresh guacamole is to die for."

  • "Great service, better guacamole! Great place to unwind after work or after a game"

  • "Food was mediocre and cocktails were really unpleasant. Not sure why this restaurant seems to have gone downhill?"

  • "The food and service was phenomenal. A great experience for the whole family. I highly recommend la Rosa Mexicana."

  • "The food was OK, nothing special this time. Sangria was average & service was average..."

  • "The reservation system on OpenTable was down for several days. I called to change the reservation time and they said it was fine and it was confirmed. When we arrived, the hostess was very rude, saying there's no record of that call and there were no tables available (2 hour wait for walk-ins!). Once we were finally seated, the food was great and our waitress was very friendly. I hope they're able to get their reservation system working soon."

  • "We keep coming back because you can count on delicious, creative and reasonably priced food. Holds its own even with all the choices in Penn Quarter. A pleasure"

  • "guacamole made right at the table was outstanding. Shrimp dish was superb. Nice ambience at lunch for a good business meeting"

  • "First impression walking in was outstanding. The host greeted me immediately as your beautiful Hostess responded immediately with professionalism and efficiency. They did not make my granddaughter and myself wait for the two people missing in our party. I gave them a heads up that our daughter and her boyfriend were en route. Our server was outstanding as well and anticipated our every need. The hostess also interacted with our granddaughter with engaging conversation as well as "props" to keep her occupied. Your staff appeared to really enjoy their jobs as well as each other. Best experience with Rosa so far! Kudos!"

  • "A wonderful Saturday afternoon dining experience with a co-worker which was a first time for her and recommended by me. There has not been a time that I have had lunch, dinner or happy hour that I was not pleased. I love this place and will return again."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "We have been to this restaurant several times before and used to love it. The quality of food and drinks has gone way down. We opted for the fish tacos and they tasted like frozen fish sticks that were fried and put on top of a taco with a bit of red cabbage and bad tartar sauce. Our $11 margarita was way overpriced and completly not worth it. I would not recommend this place to anyone and we will not be back!"

  • "Stopped in after an all-day Smithsonian tour of "green roofs" in DC and Arlington. Discovered upon examining the menu that we weren't very hungry. So we merely ate the chips and salsa and shared the guacamole appetizer, which was as spicy as usual but could have used a little more elbow grease since several of the chunks of avocado were too large. The Mango-Chili and Traditional margaritas were very good and a shot of tequila tasty. We requested seating away from children and were accomondated."

  • "The food was good although my date had to return her shrimp and brown rice dish because the shrimp was undercooked and the rice overcooked."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "In my view, their "prepared in front of you" guacamole is the best thing on their menu, and it is a great menu and wine list."

  • "Guac is good, food is fine. Nothing out of this world, but I eat here a lot."

  • "I'll start by saying the food was good (not great). The service was a step below that. Our entrees came out before our drinks did. I requested the leftover food to be wrapped and the busboy disregarded my request. It wasn't a busy night and the service (although friendly) was not up to par. Based on my experience I'm not sure I would go back or recommend this restaurant to a friend."

  • "we didn't have as much time for dinner as we hoped, but the food we had was as good as advertised. servers were very helpful in getting us out in time."

  • "We visit Rosa Mexicana most every year when we visit DC, and again it did not disappoint! Unique menu for a Mexican restaurant, starting with the excellent guacamole they prepare from scratch at your table."
    Dined on 6/5/2014
  • "Our waiter was great and very gracious. Our meal was very good, definitely one of the best "real"Mexican restaurants in town. I gave it four g instead of five stars because the tables were a bit too close together, hard to hear what my friend was saying with folks on the tables on both sides of us speaking really loudly. "
    Dined on 6/4/2014
  • "Tableside Guacamole is a must order item. I had some of the signature pomegranate margaritas. My buddy went with the more traditional margarita on the rocks. I had a skirt steak entree, which was fantastic. My friend went with a Short Ribs entree, which he really enjoyed. Service was terrific. Managers went out of their way to greet us, and make us feel welcome there. Bravo! Well done."

  • "Service team was excellent and very attentative. They even let our 7-year-old daughter help make the guacamole table side, giving her another great memory of DC! Thanks, RM team!"

  • "It was my second time at this particular location. The food again was great and the service even better. This time had the Budín de Pollo, which was almost a Mexican-style lasagna, but instead of pasta, it was layered with soft corn tortillas. A must-try. Overall would say it was an excellent experience, although it is a little pricey--not for the service or food quality, as those were superb. Mexican food ingredients are generally pretty cheap. Regardless, it is a great place in a great location directly across the street from the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro station, and I highly recommend it."

  • "We went to Rosa Mexicana for my wife's birthday. The host and servers made it special for her without going over the top and seated us in a great location. The food and service were excellent and everything was well done. I think that people should be aware that this is NOT a Tex Mex place, it's more artsy authentic Mexican food, and with that comes a higher price. Still worth it. Also, you're in the middle of tourists when you come to the Verizon Center area, so don't be too surprised if you're surrounded by hungry noisy tourists rather than quiet foody types."

  • "we really weren't impressed with the food or the service at this rosa mexicano...super fatty skirt steak and no one to tell bc it took a good 15 minutes after we received our food for the waiter to return. He walked at a snail's pace the entire time we were there even when it became busy...not returning. there are too many good restaurants in that area to want to go back after our experience..."

  • "The table side preparation of the guacomole was fun to watch and the taste was amazing. Everyone enjoyed their enttrees. Very filling and cvery reasonable in price."

  • "This restaurant was recommended to us because of the homemade guacemole! It was outstanding. The food entree food was also great. We had the crab enchiladas and the salmon. A great Restaurant "

  • "My wife and I were late for our 6 pm reservation because of weather and traffic, and also had 7:30 theater tickets. Our server Felipe managed the limited time perfectly and was instrumental in our being able to enjoy an outstanding dining experience (including dessert!) and still comfortably make our show. The salmon poblano and the grilled skirt steak were both melt-in-your-mouth flavorful, and the churros are one of the city's very best dessert options. "

  • "This was my third time at this restaurant. All three have been excellent experiences. Every review of Rosa will mention the Guacamole–our group got the spicy and it was good; a nice kick. All three times here I have ordered a fish dish--each time it has been fresh and flavorful. The waitstaff is attentive without being obtrusive. Our group was deep in conversation and we hardly even noticed that our water glasses were never empty, and the food came at just the right times. Thank you for a nice evening."

  • "We've been to RM many times and it never disappoints. Booked a table for seven this Saturday night and had a good experience overall. The guacamole made table-side is a must do, although we asked for it to be made medium and it turned out rather tame. Entrees we're good; skirt steak was outstanding, baja fish tacos were so-so, not nearly as fresh tasting as in the past. We had a couple of kids with us, and they had kids meals. They were ok, but we're served with frozen peas and carrots which no kid (or adult) ever likes. Overall a fun place to go, but on this night, RM lost a little of its luster."

  • "The food is great. I wish they had more vegetarian choices, but the one option on the menu (vegetable tacos) was fantastic, and incredibly flavorful. The prices are high, but for a special occasion it's great. Their guacamole can't be beat. "

  • "The best thing at Rosa Mexicano is the guacamole made tableside. It's simply delicious. Everything else is good too, but that guac is great!"

  • "We lived in San Antonio, Tx for several years. It was there we learned the difference between the more prevelant Tex-Mex style food and authentic, fresh, delicious Mexican cuisine. We heard this place was the latter. So we ate here for our 45th wedding anniversary while visiting Washingto, DC and were not disappointed. Excellent drinks, food, ambience and vibe! "
