A word from Rosa Mexicano - First Avenue
Our flagship location opened its doors on First Avenue in 1984. From the moment you arrive, old world charm permeates your dining experience through authentic Mexican colors and rustic folk art. Traditional amate gods greet you at the front entrance and brightly colored papel picado hangs from the ceiling. Corn tortillas are made on site and an exposition grill further seduces your senses. With its warm ambiance and outstanding cuisine, this Rosa Mexicano location has remained a perennial New York favorite for over 25 years. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This isn't your usual taco joint. Though no longer alone in offering Mexican with a flair, it's still consistently good. "

  • "The last time we ate at this restaurant was on our honeymoon in 2002, the food was exceptional then and is just as good 12 years later ! Highly recommended and hopefully will be back sooner."

  • "When we arrived the host, who was a darker skinned man about 23-28 years old have us an initial impression of rudeness. He didn't welcome or greet my girlfriend and I. instead, he waited for us to greet and approach him. He also had an annoyed, possibly arrogant demeanor and expression as he nonchalantly put us at the closest table he could find. After being seated our experience drastically improved. We had two waiters whose names I can unfortunately not recall. The initial waiter was gentleman with a darker complexion who appeared to be in his late 40's. The other seemed a bit younger and had a fair complexion. Both waiters were very informative, extremely polite and prompt! The food was very satisfying! We were impressed and will return!"

  • "It doesn't get any better then Rosa Mexicano They have the BEST, I REPEAT THE BEST GUACAMOLE IVE EVER HAD honestly I've never been a salsa or guacamole person but Rosa Mexicano has turned me out Love the decor First time I came with friends. They actually brung me there and I loved it. Then I brung a friend and he loved it lol. I'm sure he's gonna bring a friend and his friend will love it Service is amazing I always go late(10:30/11:00pm) I never feel rushed or feel like the service gets worst the later it gets(some places are like that) Drinks are amazing aswell My fave is everything lol Can't wait to go again"

  • "The guacamole is Nector to The Gods. Had it delivered to me after giving birth at New York Hospital to my son 17 years ago and still great. Always order the skewered camerones but there are many other great choices - buden azteca, pollo a la parilla, etc. Friend ordered the special salmon the other night and liked it. The margeritas are topnotch and it is hard to just have one. It is about the only time I order one (or two). Desserts, while usually unnecessary, by the time one is asked, are the only weak part of the menu, IMHO."

  • "One of our favorites when in New York, reinforced by this trip. As usual friendly and attentive service, great meals all around. A must is the guacamole with the homemade little tortillas! All the entres were excellent - short ribs, salmon, chicken with huitlecoche. We will be back the next time we are in town."

  • "Advertised as having the "worlds best guacamole" and it was right up there! The food was excellent and the menu was not your typical Mexican fare. The margaritas were really good too! Loved this place!"

  • "We have been coming here for a few years and we are never disappointed. The staff accommodated us though we arrived an hour late due to a flat tire. Anything we ordered that was out of the ordinary for us was phenomenal. The ribs and the crab empanadas were great!!! We recommend Rosa on 1stg Avenue over the other location as it is a more neighborhood feeling spot and that's what we look for when we go out."

  • "I've been eating here for years...very loyal customer. I tried all their locations but first avenue is the coziest to me. Drinks are sure to get you woozy. I love their guacaomole! No one makes it like Rosa's. Same like the churros and their chicken flautas! The whole menu is delish! Spent about $200 with my date last night! Just 2 of us."

  • "Way too crowded. Some my call it energetic, I call it unpleasant. I will stay away from Friday nights."

  • "The food is amazing! You have to try the guacamole, they make it from scratch right in front of you. I also recommend the crab enchiladas and the filet mignon with mushrooms. The homemade sangria is also excellent!"

  • "we have been going to 1st Avenue forever. This is the 1st time that waiter made mistake for the food. partly my wife's fault. she was going back and forth between shrimp and chicken and at end she selected shrimp but for some reason it waiter heard chicken. But not complaining because we had a good time and food was great."

  • "My experience was a positive one. I went with two friends for my birthday and participated in the restaurant week specials. The table side guac was delicious, the pomegranate margarita was so good and not watered down like most places (one did the trick for me but of course I got another). I got skirt steak which was juicy and flavorful. The waiter brought me a dessert with a candle and worked the restaurant week deal in our favor between the three of us. Go go go!"

  • "We frequent this location and it is always consistently great food! We always start with the fresh made at your table guac and it is always amazing. Love the corn tortillas it comes with as well. I got the chicken special which was made to perfection. We usually do dessert which is delicious! Definitely a fun place and would recommend!"

  • "For at least 25 years my family gathers regularly at one Rosa Mexicano or another in one city or another. We are always met with curtesy and by now we are pretty sure of what we ish to eat even before we pick up the menu. Our children and now our grandchildren have looked forward to our Mexican outings from the time they were little kids."

  • "The guac is OUTSTANDING and the chips were perfect with it. Can't say enough about the guac, but unfortunately, that's all I can say. Our entrees were just ok - my chicken was bland, which I wasn't expecting given the description. We drank our margaritas in 2 sips, as they were filled with ice - not cool when they cost $14. Our server was nice but too busy - we waited a long time to order and finally had to flag him down. It was hard to get his attention all night - not because he didn't want to, he just seemed to have too many tables. Overall, I was disappointed in the food/service, considering how much more expensive this place is compared with other Mexican restaurants in the area. I'd order the guac to go any day!"

  • "We first discovered the 1st Avenue Rosa Mexicano in 1995 and have been visiting on every trip to NYC since. While the other Rosa Mexicano's around the US all have good food, they don't have the quaint ambience of this original location."

  • "Every time I dine at rosa Mexicana I'm never disappointed. The food is fresh, service is amazing & decently priced."

  • "My favorite go-to-Mexican restaurant! Brought a friend for the first time.....amazing frozen pom margaritas and excellent guacamole made table side! One serving is never enough! Very lively but never too noisy to have a conversation. Always honor reservations on time and very attentive wait staff."

  • "Food was good but not cheap, and not great atmosphere. This was the original Rosa Mexicana but I think the newer locations are nicer."
