This was our first visit to Roots.
It was super busy and out waiter took awhile to get to us. When he did, he was very friendly; listened attentively to our questions and gave good answers. The steak I ordered was very greasy and full of gristle; I left 3/4 of it on my plate. My husband didn't enjoy his meal either; also too oily. In addition to the so-so food, the environment was just too loud for us to talk even though we sat side-by-side. Sorry but this one isn't going on our 'must return' list."

Welll balanced plates combining
the traditional and modern culinary approaches. Use of local ingredients and great local list of Northwest wines. Relaxed atmosphere, with great and attentive service. Wish we had one in the DFW area!"

Would have given a 5 star if it
wasn't for the babyshower group that was right next to us. Could hear each other talk."

Roots is one of the best
restaurants in the Vancouver/Portland area. We absolutely love the small plates which are very fun to order a few as appetizers or several to share with a group. We have been so pleased with everything we've ordered and can't wait to try more! We would love to see another Roots open up in Lake Oswego or Portland's south waterfront!"

Great food, great service! We've
eaten here several times and have always had a good experience."

We were so pleased with out
experience at Roots. First of all we were 10 minutes late but were received cheerfully and immediately escorted to our table. The wait staff was on the ball, answered questions and very friendly. Our meal was served quickly and the steak were done just right. We thoroughly enjoyed the night, even the Pineapple Chili Margarita. Hot!"

We enjoyed our New Years meal with
friends. We ate early, had the special which was excellent along with top notch service."

I've always heard about this place
and finally got around to trying it on my anniversary with my wife and her parents. Everything on the menu sounded good, which was filled with seasonal fresh ingredients. Our waitress was so friendly and kind that we didn't feel bad for taking so long to finally decide what to get! The only disappointment of the night was that they were out of the chicken liver mousse with the charcuterie board. The chicken entree was very moist and tender, and the risotto was cooked perfectly. Couldn't have asked for a better dining experience! They even served us our dessert on a plate that had "happy anniversary" written on it with chocolate sauce!"

Had a good time at the Roots. The
service and ambience was refreshingly nice. The food was good but with a few tweeks could have been better. The appetizers were nice but the scallops were just slightly underdone. I would rather have that then over done though. The steamed mussels were perfectly cooked and tender but both my wife and I think one clove of garlic added to the broth would have raised the bar. The wine was great!"

Came here for a dinner with my
in-laws. We had another great dinner. We enjoy his they use local products and produce, and how they add flair to their dishes. One of Vancouver's gems."

This place is always good to host
an out of state visitor or a good friend. It is dependable, friendly, and the food is reliable. Just a pleasant, relaxing place for a good meal."

Although a little expensive, we
had a very delicious New Year's Eve dinner at Roots. They have a good selection of wines, and a variety of menu choices. For starters, I had a hearty potato and leek soup, the King Fisher Farms spinach salad with warm cider dressing, bacon, apples and walnuts, which are large enough to share. As the main course I had Draper Valley chicken on mashed potatoes, bacon brussel sprouts and pomegranate glaze. I am not a fan of brussel sprouts, but after tasting Roots'spreparation, with the bacon and glaze I think I may become a fan. The meal was extremely delicious."

When we first entered the
restaurant the waiting area was crowded and When we got a chance to look in the restaurant we rapidly decided to sit and the only hip looking place, the bar. The rest of the restaurant looks like an assisted living facility. We were excited to try a new place. We both order a drink and started the process of ordering bad food. I ordered the beets salad which came with canned beets. My husband ordered a cheese plate which had all the ingredients but it was served on a old beat up white plate, a wood board would be better. My dinner was just as disappointing. Nothing seemed fresh. To top it off, the bar is so poorly designed. There is NO knee space and we had to eat sideways. I don't recommend it."
Dined on 12/31/2013
The food was tasty but the menu is
lacking in variety and creativity. The menu hasn't changed in years. It is also waaaaaaay overpriced, especially for what you get. The only way I will go back is for happy hour, it is a much better value and worth the money at that time."
Dined on 12/26/2013
Had a wonderful Christmas Eve
dinner. They were busy so we were seated in the bar, whcih I wasn't sure would work, as we were seated next to a table of 12 people. However, I was happily surprised that the sound wasn't bad and we were able to hold a conversation without raising our voices. The food was outstanding. The drinks were a treat - we especially recommend the Hot Buttered Rum. Every bite was delicious and the high quality locally sourced ingredients show the level of care and commitment to high quality food."
Dined on 12/24/2013
Our group of 6 had dinner here. It
was a bit difficult to have a group conversation because of the acoustics and the larger group siting near us. My cauliflower soup was delicious, spinach salad good but nothing special. We ordered the toffee cake for dessert - it was pretty sweet - the ice cream served with the cake was needed to cut the sweetness. I never received the after dinner coffee I ordered and I don't remember the waiter checking in to ask how we were doing. It didn't really feel like a special occasion place, although the prices certainly were at that level. My cauliflower soup with a bit of Dungeness crab and truffle oil was $12.00. I think I will stick with the happy hour."
Dined on 12/17/2013
I have not been here for 3-4
years, but it is the way I remember, really good local seasonal food, in a space that is ridiculously noisy. Very modern, hard surfaces really bouce around the normal noise from diners. I wish they would hang some sound panels, and then it would be much more appealing."

This restaurant is Outstanding and
you're still in Vancouver."

We had another great experience at
Roots. Rich was our waiter and he is the best! He is knowledgeable about the menu, knows the wine list - always has a recommendation of a new wine we haven't tried - and is super attentive. The meal was wonderful. We started with the scallops and the onion tart (always fabulous). I had the kale and pumpkin salad which I love and followed with the wild salmon with a butternut squash hash. The chocolate pave was the shared finish. I am a regular at Roots - I love it. It is my neighborhood go to spot. And Rich and the crew are outstanding!"

What a great selection of savory
dishes with a touch of pumpkin! A unique taste of autumn flavors presented bearutifully. The pumpkin fritter dessert was to die for....still thinking about it two days later!"
Dined on 11/15/2013
Went here purely based on the
really good reviews, and the food was really good. Actually, it was really really good. Carmalized scallops were wonderful. Wedge salad was as well. Really nice staff - the whole place has a warm, welcoming environment."
Dined on 11/7/2013
The food was amazing! The
restaurant is very nice. The service was good but slow."
Dined on 11/2/2013
Business dinner - ended up eating
in the bar area - very comfortable setting. Love the long table in front of the bar - perfect for the the four of us."
Dined on 10/30/2013
I had the halibut...it was
delicious! Excellent recommendation by the waiter!"
Dined on 10/13/2013
Service was good although actually
getting food took a while (we were on lunch hour). Service and attention while we waited for our food was good, we were not ignored. Once we got it it was WORTH THE WAIT. We were so impressed with the food we couldn't resist dessert. Again....oh my gosh! Definately will go back...even if getting the food takes a while again."
Dined on 9/17/2013
We were greeted promptly once we
were in and seated immediately. Our server was kind enough to let us sit in the restaurant area even though we were going to order from the Happy Hour menu. My partner got a Mochatini and absolutely loved it. I ordered the Pinapple Chili Margarita and never again will I order that, it was way too spice and it took me almost the whole time we were there to finish it. The taste wasn't bad it was just too damn spicy. I ordered the sirloin steak burger with bleu cheese and bacon, yum yum yum, and some french fries which were fried to perfection. My partner had the tomato based mussels with fragula (sp). Overall, we had a good experience, our server was gracious and kind."
Dined on 9/28/2013
We had very good server. Our food
was not worth what we paid for. My Ribeye steak was quite fatty, and my dining companion short ribs had to be sent back because of to much fat on them. I have been to Roots before but usually for Happy Hour. I was just overeall dissapointed."

Roots is a perfect example of what
fine dining in Vancouver should strive for. I brought long-time friends, visiting from Scottsdale, to Roots, which was also my first visit. We were given a quiet table - not hard to do on this very quiet Sunday evening. Each course was nicely presented. We were not rushed. Loved the corn soup, the scallops, and the risotto! We shared the yummy peach cobbler - fresh peaches, everyone! I will return."
Dined on 9/23/2013
This is my new favorite
restaurant! The food was amazing and so was the service! I will be back!"
Dined on 9/4/2013
Found this restaurant through an
on-line search. Now sets the standard for THE MOST delicious corn soup ever. Every item we had for lunch was fabulous. Service could be improved though for the cost to dine here."
Dined on 8/31/2013
Food was exceptional. Wine list
great, waiter knew exactly what I was wanting in a wine. It was not on the menu but found it in their inventory for me."
Dined on 8/31/2013
We hadn't been to Roots for a
while and it was as good as we recalled. I had the fresh corn soup and a salad and my husband had the pork chop dinner. Both meals were excellent- Thoms pork chop was tender and very flavorable. It was at least 2 inches thick and cooked to his request. The fresh corn soup was one of the best soups I have ever had! I am going back for more this week for lunch and will bring home more for dinner. It is noisy especially at dinner but the open plan of the building usually lends to a noisy place when full. We are thinking we will change our 'special occasion' restaurant to Roots from now on."
Dined on 8/23/2013
My wife and I had steak dinners.
had great flavor but way too much salt and both over cooked. Decor of restaurant was not impressive for the prices. Bread was tasteless and all air"
Dined on 8/17/2013
The evening was perfect! Great
wine selection and the food, from appetizers to desert, was "outstanding". The presentation was beautiful but the intricate tastes and unique pairings and choices of ingredients were delicious! Service was top notch, Rich is a pro, On a scale of 1 to 10 our evening at Roots was a definite 10!"
Dined on 8/11/2013
Nice wine selection but food was
bland. Filet mignon was peppery and this was not indicated on the menu. Also, it was a fatty cut. Very disappointing. Salmon was good but served on a bed of white rice and peas. I could have just cooked this at home. For $150 I expected much better food. Cocktails were good though, as was the wine selection. However, the food was not worth returning for."
Dined on 7/14/2013
The food and service at Roots is
as good as NW fusion style restaurants in Portland, OR, but without the drive!"
Dined on 6/10/2013
This was my first visit and
thought they did a great job. Scallop appetizer and halibut main were cooked right and both had nice presentations. Rhubarb dessert was excellent! Service was attentive, the restaurant design was attractive. Only complaint was that only 5% of red wine list was from California which limits you to only Oregon; offer a fair balance and let the customer decide. I would return again."
Dined on 6/22/2013
We just moved down the street and
thought we would check out Roots. What a great place. Our meals were delicious, our waiter was great and the ambiance (especially on the outdoor patio) was wonderful. This is now one of my favorite places!"
Dined on 6/16/2013
My husband and I really like
Roots; we had the occasion to meet with some friends that we hadn't dine with in years....Roots was the perfect spot. Service was impeccable; we found ourselves talking too much and were never ready to order...the waiters were very patient. The food was good and our friends enjoyed it too. Thank you!"
Dined on 6/15/2013
I only chose these 2 because of
the prices. I thought some of the dishes were very price (filet)."
